Senator rips 1804 author

Coates

Calling for repeal of the state's immigration bill, the senator says its author is a "mad scientist."

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Sen. Harry Coates on Thursday called fellow Republican Rep. Randy Terrill, author of Oklahoma's controversial immigration legislation, "a mad scientist and Oklahoma is his laboratory."

Coates said Terrill, who has recently proposed even stricter immigration legislation, is getting "wackier and wackier" and his rhetoric has racist overtones.

"When you say that mothers who have dark skin should not be able to receive prenatal care, I find that racist," Coates said.

Terrill has objected to the state's Medicaid agency approving a rule that would allow payments for prenatal care to mothers who are in the country illegally.

"So Coates is playing the race card," Terrill said. "This is outrageous and insulting. He is doing a disservice to his own cause with this inflammatory rhetoric."

At a state Capitol news conference, Coates called for repeal of sections of House Bill 1804, whose primary author was Terrill, R-Moore. Coates said he has both economic and moral concerns about the bill, portions of which went into effect Nov. 1.

"What people don't seem to realize is that the chilling effect of this law has resulted in the loss of both documented and undocumented employees," Coates said. "These are good jobs and they pay good wages, but few American workers are willing to take them."

Jack Gray, whose

Oklahoma City roofing company has been in business more than 100 years, said he hasn't lost any business, "but we will not be able to bid on any future business. There are not enough Americans who are willing to work construction."

Rep. Shane Jett, R-Tecumseh, said he will introduce a bill to create a pilot program where workers could buy a tax number identification card that would be an affidavit documenting a good-faith intent and effort to comply with Oklahoma law.

"I don't believe there is a state representative or senator who intended to have a family living in fear," Jett said. "The family is the first institution consecrated by God, and I believe it's our re sponsibility to protect families."

Terrill has proposed another bill he is calling "Son of 1804" that may contain provisions such as seizing the property of those who knowingly harbor and assist illegal immigrants.

Following a press conference at the state Capitol, Coates said Terrill's actions are "the result of not reining in a bad idea."

But Terrill said 80 percent of Oklahomans are in favor his legislation.

Terrill pointed out that House Bill 1804 was handily approved by both the House and Senate and signed by Gov. Brad Henry.

Some lawmakers have said it was impossible to vote against House Bill 1804 because of the political considerations. Asked whether lawmakers voted for the bill because they thought they had to, Coates said if so, "they are not showing proper leadership, if you know it is a bad bill and you vote for it anyway."

Terrill said Coates' comments "would be laughable if they did not come from a senator who derives most of his income from the construction and building trade."

Coates said he is a construction consultant, which provides him with information about what is happening with some businesses, but he does not have any employees working for him.

Senator,

WHY are you more concerned with the welfare of the ILLEGAL families than they are? If these families were not here illegally, the problems you are complaining about wouldn't be an issue now would it? When you don't follow the law, bad things happen but who is at fault? I don't believe their plight is a consideration for the American citizenry. If they were not here illegally, they would not have the issues that they fear. Common sense Senator.

Seems to me that THIS Senator is the mad scientist who is probably getting kick backs or benefiting financially in some way. If he isn't then it seems he would be willing to leave this HB alone. LEGAL citizens moved away when they started getting screwed on jobs and pay. OK keeps saying it wants to bring in new business. Well, who in their right mind would want to bring businesses to an ILLEGAL-infested state? Given time people will come back and fill those jobs when they find out that THEY are going to get the same good treatment that the ILLEGALS were getting. Until then, Mr. Senator, suck it up and count your losses.

"There are not enough Americans who are willing to work construction."

The cold hard truth. Our economy depends on the 12 MILLION illegal workers in this country. This bill is an over-zealous knee-jerk reaction to the issue of immigration. I'll be happy to support this bill when you find me 12 million legal citizens willing to do the type of work the illegals are doing. Oklahoma sticks its head in the sand once again......

If the Senator derives most of his income from the construction and building trade, then we can see his reason for opposition. When they say "it aint the money"...ITS THE MONEY..

Pure hogwash!

Benefits should be dependant on citizenship and/or legal satus. No mention of 'dark skin'.

It's ridiculous how the employers and friends of employers make such statements and comments that are quickly published as though they are fact.

Sure the legal workers who have been displaced for too many years have found other ways of paying their bills. Most of them are not still sitting by the phone, waiting for their former employers to invite them back.

If the employers offer a fair wage, legal workers will fill the jobs.

The jobs were filled and the work was done before the invasion of undocumented workers - they will be filled again when the employers once again become respectable American employers.

Legal workers in many other parts of the nation are paid much higher wages than the workers here made before they were replaced by illegal workers. Their employers still make money.

It's pure greed on the part of the employers and many elected officials have trouble remembering who they are supposed to represent.

Illegal Illegal Illegal We as a country seem to more and more blur the line between right and wrong. If illegal's arn't here to do the jobs then maybe our children, our unemployed college grads, our displaced older workers will be able to learn a trade. Not being able to find people to fill these jobs is a statement created by people that don't want to pay a fair wage, benifits, or haven't asked for assistance from our goverenment to create programs to get people off of welfare into these jobs so that all could be a win win. Bottom line is that Illegal should be Illegal. If they want what America has to offer go through the system to arrive as a legal worker.

Tired argument, Tulsa (12/7/2007 5:51:27 AM)
Support for HB 1804 is not waning among legal citizens.

Under the new law, Oklahoma is not taking people to the border, they are only assisting federal agencies in enforcing federal law that already exists.

I doubt that the problem would have ever grown to it's current size if it weren't for greedy employers who have been violating the law for years and replacing legal workers with undocumented workers.

Those employers who have followed the rules, will not be impacted by local enforcement.

The elected officials who advocate allowing the situation to continue have forgotten who they are supposed to represent.

This issue is shining a light on those politicians as well. We are able to see which are for sale or have a conflict of interest when it comes to serving the people they were elected to represent.

The public exposure of their true loyalties is enlightening. In some cases, it borders on indecent exposure.

There is no reason for taxpayers to continue subsidizing the wages paid by unethical employers to illegal workers.

The fabric of our society is being compromised, while our pockets are being picked to enrich greedy employers who want to continue violating the law.

I am sure you are in church every Sunday praying for them people to leave or be executed soon. Do you donate to your missions in church to go force your beliefs on other countries around the world? I think you have the problem with loving your lying president too much. Oh he is also supposed to be a christian.

Geez you guys posting against 1804 and for wide open borders with no enforcement only amplify the reasons we need border control.

You are your own worst enemy when it comes to making a point.

If you have legitimate debate on the issue, it might be taken seriously.

But all you do is blast those in favor of enforcing immigration law.

Again, thanks for not having any credible to say. Fact is, there aren't any good reasons to let things continue.

If your only defense or argument is to accuse everyone in favor of control of being racist or bigots, your case is pretty dang weak.

Coates is upset because he is a developer/contracter and does work for walmart. he is upset because the illegal labor that he might have used he will now have to hire legal labor and pay taxes on them. don't you find it interesting that the only companies that might go out of business are the ones that use illegal labor?

I find it funny that people in Oklahoma, not a border state, think they can solve this country's border problems. We can't, and hb1804 made nothing illegal that wasn't illegal before. This is a do-nothing hot button issue that you people are falling for.

IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT THESE ARE NATIONAL AVERAGES AND LIKELY TO BE SEVERAL PERCENT POINTS HIGHER IN CONSERVATIVE STATES.

Enforcing our Immigration Laws and Securing National Borders are not partisan, divisive, or polarizing issues! In current polls the vast majority of United States Citizens want our Immigration Laws Enforced and our National Borders Secured. Politicians without their own or their Elitist Political “Contributor’s” self serving agenda, support their citizens and not their Elitist “Contributors”.

It is funny to hear how people that took land from someone else are now so worried about assimilation of another group of peoples coming into their land.HA! HA! Have fun stewing jam!
