One person died and several others, including a firefighter, were injured Wednesday morning when a Tulsa apartment complex caught fire.

Firefighters arrived shortly after 8 a.m. at the Saddle Brook Apartments, 1400 E. 62nd Street South, to find four apartments fully involved, Capt. Larry Bowles said.

The fire was knocked down, and a man’s body was found in the apartment where the fire likely began, Bowles said. His age and identity are unknown.

Firefighters were originally told five people were trapped in the same apartment, but two women were able to escape and were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene.

Two other women, one elderly and another in her late 20s or early 30s, were rescued and taken to the hospital with burns, Bowles said. The severity of their injuries is not known.

A firefighter was also taken to the hospital with second-degree burns to his shoulder and neck.

The cause of the fire has not been determined, Bowles said. The complex did not have active power at the time.

The recent ice storm has created an "extreme hazard for life safety," Bowles said, because people are using unconventional methods such as placing generators and gas grills indoors to heat their residences that are without electricity.

Tulsa firefighters have responded to more than 120 fires in the past two days, Bowles said.

God bless these families, I hope the other two women are okay! Man! That's alot of fires for two days! Wowsers! My brother just retired from the Tulsa Fire Dept. after serving 25 years, so I have some idea of what they go through, also how their families worry every time they hear about a fire on news. It scares the pants right off of you sometimes, it really does! Keep up the good work, Tulsa Fire Dept!! We love you guys and appreciate your bravery, and all that you do to serve your career and community! God bless you and yours!!

I did not hear the sirens; but, that apt. complex is officially 2 blocks north of where I live. The Ch. 2 News folks said just a few minutes ago they still did not know the identity of the dead man.

. . . I have known several men who worked for the TFD. Most of them have retired in recent years.

From the sounds of it these folks didn't have electricity and heat. Somebody may have been burning something for heat. I heard on news alot of folks don't know things like it being dangerous to fire up the grill in the house, or to keep the generator in the garage, or outside. Some people just don't know any better, and are just trying to get through the best they know how. It's tough sometimes.

I do feel sorry for the victims, but HOW MANY TIMES do people have to be told about not using generators and things of that nature inside. Surely the salepeople that sells generators, warn people about the dangers of having them inside. Then, there are some people that just do not use common sense, like the one fire that was caused by a candle,. The parents of a 18 month old baby, said they lefted the candle burning, because the baby was scared of the dark. Since when does parents let an 18 month old infant make a decision about safety.

Their electric had been off for a few days. Some of the folks talked to just looked like common people which is actually normal for this part of Tulsa. That complex in on the north side of the street where Warehouse Market is and just east of there, too. A friend of mine had checked into moving to that location. But, he moved to south of 71st & Memorial and he called me to tell me the electric had been off there, too.

A generator needs to be kept outside of the building and not even in the garage where carbon monoxide can build up.

. . . If a person has natural gas and uses a range to help heat when the electric is off, a window needs to be slightly open not far from where the gas is burning. But if the person has a vented gas stove, that won't be a problem. I have central air with gas heat. But, there is no pilot light in the new heater; it has an electronic ignition which works like a cigarette lighter and it has to be red hot before the gas will come on in it.
