Rash of burglaries reported amid power outages

Tulsa is experiencing a rash of burglaries in the darkened city, police said Wednesday.

Up to 30 burglary reports were submitted overnight, Police Chief Ron Palmer said.

The good news is that there also were 14 burglary arrests, he said.

“This is something that we had anticipated and tried to be as proactive as possible,” Palmer said.

Twice the normal amount of officers have been on the nighttime shifts to keep the city safe, he said.

“Unfortunately, some people are making a bad situation worse by engaging in criminal activity,” Palmer said.

Authorities intend to make use of a state law that beefs up the penalties for crimes committed during a state of emergency.

The statute also will allow those age 16 or over to be prosecuted as adults.

They need to help parents by watching the younger one in the hosehold and when lights come back on and streets are clear they need to be helping clean up after this ice storm.

They are taking things that don't belong to them. They don't need basketball, they need a job sacking groceries or helping move tree limbs to the curb for people.

Hit them in the head with a baseball bat to get their attention, then explain to them why they shouldn't steal other peoples things!

I have driven around the city a lot since Monday. I have not seen ONE single Tulsa Police car on the streets. In fact, I saw more Gold Star Security cars than actual police cars. I don't believe the numbers Palmer is giving.

Lulu, #1's comment was obviously a joke based on a stereotype. Get with it and don't take things so literally all the time.

#6 I see cops all the time, they sure don't need to be stuck in some traffic jam somewhere caused by all the sight seer's.

My husband worked off duty last night and caught some thieves red handed at an electronics store. They hired him because another location was broken into the night before. Tulsa PD was on patrol the whole time and responded quickly when he called for back up. The cars seen at jewelry stores and banks are just that- cars. It's a deterant. Perhaps if people weren't calling 911 to report their power being out, our officers would have more time to deal with real crime. Might I add that the thieves caught were not illegal, and basketball is not their past time. Seems to me like their skin was as white as my own.

# 28 I read a comment posted by an illegal, that did say that God sent the ice storm to punish the people of Oklahoma, because of H.B. 1804.

Ron palmer needs to get more police on the street. They are just having way to many burglaries. They need to have every police officer in the city working 12 hour shifts until the electric is back on.

I think we ought to be bragging instead of making a big deal out of 30 thefts in a night. I imagine that on a normal night Tulsa has been experiancing close to 15 per night, we are fine. Tulsa is reacting very well , give some praise not slams. Tulsa has not had any riots or issues that many large cities have when no power. Thank you Tulsa .. You are great.

You people are amazing. There are scum bags of all colors out there ripping off hard working people. It is just "crimes of opportunity". Get off you butts and patrol your own neighborhoods! My neighbor and I did until 5:00 this morning. Thankfully no one was doing that here. But I feel terrible for those it is happening to.

Kim, it sounds like Renea is sacrificing her home to house others...i think she just called you that to be mean. But if someone steals, they deserve to get their fingers chopped off, one by one..I got a knife, I'll be happy to let someone borrow it..and #20..I like your style :)

This is a really astonishing discussion. People are coping with an emergency situation and somehow it gets tied back to illegal immigration... or basketball? Maybe the illegal immigrants drove around town personally cutting people's power. The ice must be their fault too. This is just plain racism. Calling it anything else is deceptive. And what is even worse is that the continuous attacks on illegal immigrants is making it more socially acceptable to make comments targeting other groups (i.e. the basketball comment). I'm ashamed. I guess I thought I lived in a more developed society than this.

I hope the state of Oklahoma has a special law in place to deal with looters. Most states if you are found guilty of looting will double the sentence you can receive for simple burglary or larceny. People who prey on others during a time of disaster are the lowest form of scum.

I would hope that all judges give any caught the full punishment of the law, no plea bargaining. If they don't happen to get caught, don't forget, we have a law which goes by the name of "make my day". Anyone that stoops this low in time of trouble get exactly what they deserve.

# 17... Well now, I can ask you the same thing. Why aren't you out doing all of the things that you are telling other people to do, instead, what are you doing, sitting at your computer trying to downgrade someone that you know nothing about. I never lost electricity, thank you. Oh, by the way, are you helping those in need ??? NO !!!!

sounds like you might be one of those we need to fear. I don't care what nationality the people are that are breaking into the homes and thinking they have the right to other peoples things they should be charged as if they had committed murder.

What's basketball got to do with it? People have to be taught to respect other people's property. If you catch your child taking something then take something of theirs..let them know how it feels. When my oldest son was small he broke a favorite fishing lure of his dad's..his dad proceeded to place in front of him the boys favorite little car and promptly stomp it to pieces..seems harsh but even at 2 the boy never touched anything that didn't belong to him again..he's now 32

#6 If you wanna find the police look around the jewelry stores. that's where I see most of the squad cars sitting all day long.

Israel jewelry on Yale and 51 st usually has 2 cars sitting there alllll day long. I guess Jewelry stores pay better then the city does.

EVEN WHEN IT ISNT A STATE OF EMERGENCY. SOME PEOPLE STILL HAVE A HARD TIME, OBTAINING JOBS, FEEDING THEIR FAMILIES. THE SAME PEOPLE BEING JUDGEMENTAL ABOUT A PERSONS PAST, ARE THE SAME PEOPLE THAT HAVE CRIMINAL BACKGROUNDS THEM SELVES. HELP PEOPLE AND STOP TURNING PEOPLE AWAY THAT WANT TO CHANGE THIER LIVES!!!!
