Chuck Norris aims to start a fight

A Tulsa team will be among those vying in the actor's new martial arts fighting league.

Chuck Norris doesn't just fight, he creates fighting leagues.

Whether he's the champion of martial arts or television's star of martial law, Ryan, Okla., native Chuck Norris is still going strong.

Now 67 and living on a Houston ranch, his second-year martial arts "World Combat League" is coming Friday to the Tulsa Convention Center.

"It's been an idea for me for 30 years," Norris said. "I had to decide between a film career and the league then. After I finished eight years of 'Walker, Texas Ranger' I started rethinking the league and the team concept."

This "team concept" is what sets Norris' WCL apart from mainstream mixed martial arts groups such as Ultimate Fighting Championship, he said. In addition, ground combat is disallowed, but rounds are fast-paced.

"Watching UFC over the last 20 years, when fighters go to the ground, they have become so proficient in avoiding submissions so it becomes boring," Norris said.

"'Knockouts, not tapouts,' is what we say."

Another difference is the type of gloves fighters use. To prevent concussions, boxing gloves instead of "bag gloves" which leave fists exposed are used.

"That's way too dangerous from what I want," he said. "We also have an open area with no ropes and no wires that obstruct views."

The

Friday event will feature four teams, including the Oklahoma Destroyers, coached by Tulsa karate coach Dale Cook.

While the team bears the state's name, Norris said it is Tulsa's team.

"Cook is a good friend of mine, and he's from there," Norris said. "Right now it's Tulsa and will probably stay in Tulsa. We're looking for the cities that will support it most."

Norris knows firsthand how martial arts can change lives. Kickstart, a charity that brings martial arts training to at-risk youth, is the beneficiary of the WCL, he said.

"All the money that comes from the league goes straight to Kickstart," Norris said.

Norris said he has lofty goals for his league. To make it a true "World" Combat League, he said he wants 36 teams in the United States and 24 each in Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

"We're still new, so we'll see how it goes," he said.

While he will not be at the event Friday because of prior obligations, he said he will be coming to Tulsa for the next WCL event, currently scheduled for March.

"My heart has always been in martial arts and it's been part of my life for 47 years," he said. "I think if people come and see it, they'll become fans of the league. I hope they get behind their team."

WCL is not mixed martial arts, it's typical kickboxing, of which there are already many larger organizations. Without ground fighting, fighters will receive more punches to the head and suffer more head trauma; simply compare the number of deaths in MMA to those in boxing and kickboxing for proof of this.

I am a Tulsa native and am glad to see Tulsa embrace some type of professional sport. Since the USFL left town we have been left out of the pro sports circuits. In regards to Chuck Norris' comments regarding the UFC being "boring" I am left baffled. How can he not appreciate the technical proficiency of the MMA fighters of today? As a current resident of Las Vegas as you might imagine the UFC is the buzz of town. The "Gladiator" persona that embodied the old UFC has long been gone. This is a true sport and one that requires a more than sufficient amount of knowledge in so many different styles of martial arts. Norris himself was trained by the legendary Bruce Lee. Master Lee himself advocated cross training 35 years ago. He also was a strong advocate of mastering attrition. I can only "assume" that Lee would also be a strong supporter of MMA today. I believe Chuck Norris is and has always been a genuine product of pure traditional martial arts and I respect that but I must disagree with his position on MMA of today. Could it be to just sell "his" own brand of fighting? Let us not forget Norris did film an episode of Walker Texas Ranger titled " Fight or Die" where he was shown fighting in a Cage and performing many ju-jitsu and basic wrestling techniques. Including an arm-bar submission attempt (Boring?) This leads me to believe he recognized the influence of MMA and its popularity with his target audience (males 18-35) and wanted to capitalize on it. They wont allow me to post the clip but it can be found on youtube. I could go on but this is becoming a novel. GO TU!

Don I don't think you understood my message. If you take another read you will see that I never downplayed Chuck Norris or his reputation. I made a simple observation regarding his bash on MMA. I must agree with Dave. I am not sure you understood the depth of my pointing out of facts and the contradictions in what Norris said and has done. I never made a reference to the WWE in any form or fashion.

Further more if you watch the video I am referencing and if you have any knowledge of grappling you will see Norris perform judo throws, a fire-mans carry (novice wrestling maneuver) and basic half guard, full mount ground and pound prefaced by a number of fluid ju-jitsu moves leading into a perfectly orchestrated arm-bar. It wouldn't surprise me to find that someone in the Gracie family consulted with the show prior to shooting the scene. My comments weren't meant to start a debate. You can only argue opinions you can not argue facts my friend.
