Anonymous gift as good as gold
Maj. Daniel New of The Salvation Army holds a 1979 Krugerrand that was dropped into a collection kettle last week in Tulsa. The gold South African coin is valued at more than $800. MICHAEL WYKE / Tulsa World

A Krugerrand coin is found in one of Tulsa's Salvation Army kettles.
An anonymous Christmas tradition continues with a Krugerrand slid through the slot of a local Salvation Army red kettle.
Sometime last week, a person dropped the gold coin in the kettle at the Wal-Mart at 81st Street and Lewis Avenue.
Four of the last five years, a Krugerrand has been placed in a kettle locally.
"We take the donation and count our blessings and appre- ciate the gift," Salvation Army spokesman Brad Borror said.
"It was dropped in the kettle to help our Christmas program, and we will make sure it goes to give families a good Christmas."
A Krugerrand is a South African coin made with about 1 ounce of gold. It first was minted in 1967 to help market South African gold and was intended for private owner- ship.
One of the world's best- selling gold coins, it has no face value and normally trades at a premium above the daily gold price. On Thursday, the coin was worth about $800.
The Salvation Army will seek bids on the coin and sell it in the next few weeks, Borror said.
Stories about rare coin donations in Salvation Army kettles date to the 1970s in the northeastern U.S., Borror said.
Krugerrands and American Eagle coins, among others, have been found in kettles in Iowa, Minnesota, Florida, Vermont and Kansas.
"The Krugerrand seems to be the coin of choice here," Borror said. "We have no idea who it is. We don't know if it's the same person, or other people who heard the story and decided to do the same thing.
"But we are thankful for the donation. It's a wonderful anonymous gift."

I would love to buy that, but the Salvation Army is always sky high on their stuff. Not to mention that the store on 21st & Sheridan is crooked. If you give the employees cash in the back, they will give you anything for the price it should be, otherwise the stuff stays in the front. The manager did this all the time with us & I refused. It's stealing from Charity. They try to sell used futons that sell for $99.00 at Wally world for like $130.00 used. unreal.

I have relatives that are Captains in the Salvation Army and were in charge of the kettle money count. I wouldn't recommend putting something of that value in one of the kettles. It may well get lost in the change sorter. I wonder how many people do this and their coin is never found. Also, please never donate a 1,000 pound block of cheese to the SA. It puts a hinderence on the people that have no idea how to store and/or distribute it. :)

, Tulsa, to all of our friends in Tinseltown (12/24/2007 8:31:55 AM)
We would like to thank all of you who donated to the Salvation Army in 2007.
.
I and the Board of Regents of ORU would also like to thank all of our partners and friends who have sown into our ministries this year during 2007, the year of fulfillment.
May your dreams come true, may all you’ve asked for come to pass, and may your life be fulfilled to the fullest.
.
I also want to thank those of you in particular who sowed your lucky $77 offering into our ministry in 2007, the year of fulfillment, completion, overflow, and blessing. Remember, you’ve sown into good ground, and you can expect a good harvest of blessings, increase, and favor from the seed that you’ve sown.
.
Don’t forget, be sure to sow your $88 offering at the first of the New Year; remember, 8 is the number of new beginnings, and 2008 is the year of new beginnings, favor,
promotion, and blessing.
.
Send your final 2007 offering today to seal your favor, fulfillment, completion, overflow,
and blessing for the year 2007; otherwise, you might not get it and your breakthrough might not happen.
.
Also, if you send your lucky $88 offering at 8:08am on the first of year, I want to remind you that your setting yourself up and positioning yourself for a *double* impact of blessing, favor, and promotion in the year of new beginnings. Let’s go for the double in 2008! Together we can do it!
.
And for those of you who send an offering of at least $888, in combination with your first fruits offering for 2008, you’ll receive our special “New Beginnings” scripture- blessing- ark- of- the- covenant replica with scripture verses you can confess each day as you pray over your promotion and increase in order to seal your New Beginnings Blessings.
.
Maybe you’ve been through some things in the past; maybe you’ve been through some tough times. I understand. I’ve been there. I know how you feel. But I want to tell you today, that this upcoming year is the year of New Beginnings, the year of blessing and favor, the year that will begin a new season and a new cycle of promotion and increase for you in your life, your family, your finances, your job, your health, and your relationships.
.
So send your final year end offering of $77 today, and don’t forget to send your $888 offering at 8:08am on the 1st of the year, and be blessed as you watch your blessings of favor, increase, and promotion take place in the year of New Beginnings!
.
And until then, may you be blessed with the joy and peace of the blessings of the season of the holydays, and may the greetings of the season be yours as you are blessed in abundance. Holli Happy Days!
