A look at ORU's troubles

For more: Read the latest ORU stories, view the lawsuit and other documents and watch slide shows and video.

The university has been besieged by controversy for nearly three months.

In nearly three months since three former Oral Roberts University professors filed a lawsuit against the university and its president, controversy has swirled around the school and its founding family.

First came allegations -- as yet unproven and strongly denied -- of the Richard Roberts family's lavish lifestyle charged to the university and ministry. Then more lurid allegations, also strongly denied, of an improper relationship between Lindsay Roberts and an underage boy.

Since then, hardly a week has passed without major news stemming from the controversy.

ORU President Richard Roberts resigned, regents promised an investigation and two evangelists on the board resigned while one lost his voting status. Two students and a former accountant filed suit against the school.

ORU revealed it was $52 million in debt, and some observers feared for its very existence.

Then a name few in Tulsa were familiar with, Mart Green, surfaced. Green made an offer of a gift of up to $70 million to ORU. The first $8 million was an unrestricted gift, but the rest is contingent on the university

changing its culture, and becoming more transparent and financially accountable. Others have also come forward, including an anonymous donor giving $2 million.

No new developments in this story.

To sum it up - ORU is an enormous mess and will take years and years to recover - if ever.

It is time to forgive, and move on. I can not believe how much hate I have been reading lately in all of the comments after all of the articles on ORU. I am a Christian and Love The Lord. I don't hate anyone and I forgive. I make mistakes all of the time, I pray that I will be forgiven and loved, by the Lord and my Christian Brothers and Sisters. Please it is time to forgive, show love and Christian brotherhood and sisterhood.

my cousin lives about 10 houses away from R & L house. She said she knows someone who services there and he told her that Lindsay is mean and hateful to him and the help working there. What a Christian example of walking in love. She is very demanding and forceful from what he told her.

Something Positive And Uplifting:

Jesus came and died to set the captives free. Even now, scales are beginning to fall from people's eyes, and they are seeing Truth. Though they are, and will be, in sorrow and grief discovering the apostacy they have partaken in, soon that sorrow will become joy, knowing they have escaped the very pits of hell itself! More and more will be delivered and set free from the heresy and lying signs and wonders movement that has invaded the church.. Those who are truly called and chosen are waking up as if from a deep sleep, a nightmare.. They are being set free from the deception and delusion, i.e. witchcraft, that has been allowed to infect their very souls. God is here, and is bringing His children out of the hands of the wicked... the rest of you will follow these men straight into acceptance of the lawless one foretold to rise. But for those who's heart is only towards God, who want nothing more, we will escape. The rest will be chasing the delusion, the signs and wonders.. Time is running out.... History is barreling to it's conclusion.

Now judgement has come to the pulpits, next it will hit the pews. I'm already cleaning my house, have been for some time now. One thing I do know... if your preacher is telling you we are about to enter into the most supernaturally powerful time christianity has ever seen, or some such jargon... you better run like the wind! Get out of there! No signs will save you, only FAITH in the Word!

You are about to see God seemingly remove His hand of protection and presence off of us. You will cry out and not see Him, this is the season we are entering. My prayer is that even when I don't see Him or feel Him, that I will have enough Faith to still believe. This is the test.... God is sifting the hearts and souls of men. I know He's real, He doesn't have to give me a thing, I have His Word! Heck, that's all I need! Whatever comes, I'm determined to finish my race! Please say an honest prayer and ask God to reveal the hearts of the men you look to to lead you and teach you, the ones your hearts are so open towards to recieve from, and also to reveal any wrong doctrine you may have recieved, then listen to what God tells you. It's okay to mess up and get off the path, we all do it. What's not okay is knowing the truth, and then denying it to keep following a lie. Yes, it is hard to admit you were wrong, but it's something you just have to go through, repent and also forgive yourself. I still work on that one lol

For those who defect out, there are many great resources and groups out here for you, to help you through the pain and get you through to the other side.

Nothing will stop what's to come... those who think they can fight it are very blind and have been lied to, and are lying to others.

From the story above: "Since then, hardly a week has passed without major news stemming from the controversy." Please - enough patting yourself on the back already. The public will be the judge of what a "major story" is, not a couple of liberal, hack reporters at The Tulsa World. And the public has spoken: "Move on." They realize that ORU is taking the steps needed to keep the school strong, why is the message taking so long to sink in at The World? The only thing that has kept this tired "story" afloat on even a local basis is the constant barrage of sensationalistic yellow journalism such as this retread report. Please get over your obvious disappointment that you weren't able to bring ORU to its knees, and find another topic to waste your time on. This one is simply OLD NEWS...

PARENTS AND STUDENTS-- SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT

Do you really want to bet your future on an institution that may not be around in one, two or three years?

Because

--- it has burned through its endowment, which was heavily used as the Roberts family personal piggy bank.

(It's now been revealed $5 million of it went to buy OR a luxury mansion in Beverly Hills)

-- that Accredition authorities has, in efffect, but on notice and probation-- by scheduling another accreditation review in two years-- instead of the normal ten years between reviews.

-- that is facing multiple lawsuits, the outcome and consequences of which are unknown.

-- that has operated deficits for eleven straight years, partly due to supporting a lavish, royal life-style of the "rich and famous" RR family.

-- that, bottom line, is ruled by the veto power RR holds over the ORU Board of Regents.

(Do you really trust RR that much?)

-- That is not supported by 95% of the alumni -- and for good reason.

About whom an alumni --Graydon Powell -- said in post 13, above

-------------------

I am an ORU alum fro m the 70s. The nonsence that surfaced last fall has been there for years. This needs to be treated as white-collar crime, with some serious jail time for Richard and Lindsay and not a few of the Regents. They looted the place while faculty and staff prayed that the payroll would be met. Its time for a grand jury to be convened.

---------------------

Are you sure you want to "bet the farm" -- and key years of your lives --- on the train wreck ORU has become?

The way things are going it may not even be around in a year or two.

Any number of scenarios could result in its closure.

(Including RR decision to close it down, as they've closed the City of Hope, the law school and dental school.)

Then what?

IMO, this is something every student and family should be thinking about as the New Year approaches.

The story is far from over.

And it will continue as long as there is a

COVER-UP ...instead of CLEAN-UP.

Re-read alumni post 13 above...and you'll get an idea of the more to come.

--maybe a grand jury investigation.

Plus...all those lawsuits are yet to be heard.

This story is far from over.

Keep up the good work, Tulsa World

Reads like George is up and at 'em early with this short recap story. Sorry George, can't move on and "change the subject" til we get both a more transparent accounting of the rot at the center/top. And we can't "move on" til we have a major overhaul of the compromised BoRg (e.g., the ORU board of regents) -- beginning with any "prosperity evangelists" who received the fake doctoral candy from RR....

And most especially, before we can "move on," we need either the formal removal or a candid "mia culpa" from GP -- the BoRg chair who thought "God put him there to do whatever Richard Roberts wants." Is that still his stance? If he can't clearly answer that in the negative, then nothing yet has really changed....

The Conchristians have been stealing and covering it up ever since christianity was invented. In fact that is why it was invented. Murdering and steling the Indian Homelands slavery, sexual molestation--you name it and the christians did and do it. The national deficit and the money lenders leeching the money off the people is caused by dthe christians. I wish they wouuld stop being so selfish and help the people and not be leeches.

Speaking of miracles, this newspaper missed another miracle,at the highth of the ice storm two weeks ago,ORU had electric power,Citi-Plex had power.

No one else,in the area had power,Walmart,VCC,the medical clinic ,the casino, all dark. But there Bright and Shining ORU,and no generators. The students were rejoicing, they took there final exams,in warm buildings, slept in warm dorms, ate in a warm cafeteria.ORU employees went to work in lighted, warm buildings.

Healing means some practical steps, too, in order to avoid a repeat..

Above all, it does not mean sweeping wrong under the carpet

It means practical, concrete changes

Like RR giving up veto power of the ORU BOR.

Cleaning house, openness, transparency.

Sweeping it under the carpet in the name of healing won't work.

Why any parent would want their kids to go to this train-wreck is beyond me.

go titans go,

thanks for posting your inside info. do you think BJD is opposed to the green gift out of loyalty to OR? he has always seemed so loyal to Oral that i could see him turning down the gift if OR wanted him to.

.

rest assured, any gains made w/alumni would be lost the second the BOR and BJD turned down 62 million dollars. i can't understand why BJD would want to stay on at ORU when he has his own church and ministry to run. that is what really makes me think that he is acting on OR's behalf to ensure that the roberts family do not lose control of ORU.

.

just when you think things are going to get better at ORU, you hear about the shenanigans they are trying to pull. maybe true change at ORU is a lost cause.

.

thanks again for your post, lets hope there are enough people on the BOR to overrule BJD and accept the generous offer.

Sounds to me like the fight for control of ORU is about to burst into the open.

One thing is for sure --- Green and his money will be rejected.

Just notice the # of posts that have smeared him and questioned his motives, beliefs and doctrines.

---

So, if Green is rejected it'll be a free for all.

I'm still certain OR /RR will NEVER give up control.

They'll pull the plug,, as they've done on the City of Faith, the law school and the dental school.

Nothing could be more grating to them than to see ORU grow and prosper after they've been publicly shunted to the side.

I KNOW BJD VERY WELL. HE DOESN'T BELIEVE IN DEBT. HE HAS CAUSED MANY LAY-OFFS ALREADY TO CUT THE UNNECESSARY PAID LABOR AT ORU. HE IS A STRONG BELIEVER IN VOLUNTEER LABOR AND ABHORS DEBT. i DON'T KNOW ANOTHER PERSON ALIVE THAT HAS HIS LEVEL OF INTEGRITY. ALTHOUGH HE WANTS ORU TO SURVIVE AND BE DEBT FREE, HE WILL NOT BOW TO unreasonable DONORS OR OR/RR ABOUT ANYTHING BUT PRESERVING THE VISION OF THE SCHOOL. WHEN THEY PUT HIM AT THE HELM, MY CONCERNS EASED UP. I'VE WORKED WITH HIM; HE IS BY NO MEANS NOT A YES MAN, AND A VERY STRAIGHT SHOOTER> NO NONSENSE MANAGEMENT, STRONG EXECUTIVE, and very integrous.

BJD FOR SAINTHOOD

Hey Jake 39

Cut the caps, man. We got eyes.

And YES, BJD should be canonized and put up for sainthood.

Thanks for polishing the halo around his head. My goodness. Talk about being a sycophant!

Does this guy put his pants the same way we do, or what?

Nomination forms for sainthood will be on the table of the church next Sunday.

I and the Board of Regents of ORU would like to thank all of our partners and friends who have sown into our ministries this year during 2007, the year of fulfillment.

May your dreams come true, may all you’ve asked for come to pass, and may your life be fulfilled to the fullest.

.

I also want to thank those of you in particular who sowed your lucky $77 offering into our ministry in 2007, the year of fulfillment, completion, overflow, and blessing. Remember, you’ve sown into good ground, and you can expect a good harvest of blessings, increase, and favor from the seed that you’ve sown.

.

Don’t forget, be sure to sow your $88 offering at the first of the New Year; remember, 8 is the number of new beginnings, and 2008 is the year of new beginnings, favor,

promotion, and blessing.

.

Send your final 2007 offering today to seal your favor, fulfillment, completion, overflow,

and blessing for the year 2007; otherwise, you might not get it and your breakthrough might not happen.

.

Also, if you send your lucky $88 offering at 8:08am on the first of year, I want to remind you that your setting yourself up and positioning yourself for a *double* impact of blessing, favor, and promotion in the year of new beginnings. Let’s go for the double in 2008! Together we can do it!

.

And for those of you who send an offering of at least $888, in combination with your first fruits offering for 2008, you’ll receive our special “New Beginnings” scripture- blessing- ark- of- the- covenant replica with scripture verses you can confess each day as you pray over your promotion and increase in order to seal your New Beginnings Blessings.

.

Maybe you’ve been through some things in the past; maybe you’ve been through some tough times. I understand. I’ve been there. I know how you feel. But I want to tell you today, that this upcoming year is the year of New Beginnings, the year of blessing and favor, the year that will begin a new season and a new cycle of promotion and increase for you in your life, your family, your finances, your job, your health, and your relationships.

.

So send your final year end offering of $77 today, and don’t forget to send your $888 offering at 8:08am on the 1st of the year, and be blessed as you watch your blessings of favor, increase, and promotion take place in the year of New Beginnings!

.

And until then, may you be blessed with the joy and peace of the blessings of the season of the holly days, and may the greetings of the season be yours as you are blessed in abundance. Holli Happy Days!

I see your point, but it is likely that RR and LR do not see their behavior as wrong or inappropriate, so the chance of them coming clean is remote.

OR brought RR up with a sense of entitlement, and RR has brought LR into this, as well as raising his children this way.

Do you really think they will suddenly see the light and repent? Not likely, so why hold up the healing for that? As they say, hell would sooner freeze over...

What we call the religion of "Christianity" was started by the Byzantine Emperor Constantine in Nicea in 325 AD. His decision to organize the churches in his empire took the authority away from the local church and made it a large political organization.

--

It took away the rights of women having leadership roles in the church. Apparently, Constantine did not read the fact that during New Testament times, there were women who were evangelists, pastors, deacons and teachers in local churches.

--

ORU is NOT Christianity; it is an educational institution supposed to have been founded on Biblical Principles.

--

While folks thought they were donating money to ORU, not a bit of it went to ORU, it went to OREA/ORM and mostly to the Roberts.

--

George Pearsons stated that ORU's By-laws prevent the school from being separated from the Ministry and that the Roberts family will always be in control of what happens to ORU. That is contrary to what he said in the beginning that they would be 2 separate organizations.

Let the Roberts, who have looted and treated ORU donations as their own piggy bank, confess their wrongs.

Then the healing can begin...with a house-cleaning, transparency and openness.

But as long as they choose a COVER-UP

instead of a CLEAN-UP...forget it.
