For more: Read the latest ORU stories, view the lawsuit and other documents and watch slide shows and video.

Here is a look at key developments in the Oral Roberts University controversy:

Oct. 2: Three former Oral Roberts University professors,Tim and Paulita Brooker and John Swails, sue the school and four administrators. The suit claims the three lost their jobs because they turned over to administrators a report alleging ORU President Richard Roberts and his family spent university money for personal uses.

The suit also claims Roberts ordered Brooker to have students in Brooker’s government program work in mayoral candidate Randi Miller’s campaign.

A report attached to the lawsuit claims ORU paid $29,411 for one Roberts daughter to vacation with friends in Florida and the Bahamas; Lindsay Roberts awarded scholarships to friends of her children; one of the Roberts’ children vandalized ORU property; the Roberts’ home had been remodeled numerous times and had a 2,000-square-foot closet, and that ORU and ministry employees did homework for the Roberts’ children.

Oct. 9: Appearing on CNN’s “Larry King Live,” Richard and Lindsay Roberts deny claims in the lawsuit. Richard Roberts tells the Tulsa World that his sister-in-law, Stephanie Cantees, wrote a report containing many of the allegations attached to the suit and that her job was to report rumors, whether true or false, to him weekly.

Oct. 12: New allegations involving the Roberts family are filed in the lawsuit. The allegations are contained in the full report by Cantees. They include reports that Lindsay Roberts spent the night in an ORU guest house with an underage male nine times., was photographed 29 times in her car with the underage male after midnight and repeatedly moved her “male 16-year-old friend” into her family’s house.

Oct. 13: Lindsay Roberts issues a statement denying the new allegations. “I live my life in a morally upright manner,” the statement says.

Oct. 15: ORU confirms it was warned by the IRS in 2006 regarding participating in political activities. ORU refuses to release copies of letters between the IRS and ORU regarding an investigation of the university.

Oct. 17: Richard Roberts takes a leave of absence while the university’s board of regents and an independent auditor investigate allegations against him. “I pray and believe in God’s timing and when the board feels that it is appropriate, I will be back at my post as president,” Roberts says.

Oct. 22: Oral Roberts returns to his namesake university for the first time in three years. He tells a chapel full of students and ORU employees:“The devil is not going to steal ORU.”

Oct. 24: Board of Regents Chairman George Pearsons says ORU is $52.5 million in debt and that regents are working on reducing the amount.“We’re not crippled,” Pearsons says.

Nov. 2: ORU asks a judge to disqualify attorney Gary Richardson, who represents the three professors, due to an alleged conflict of interest. Cantees claims Richardson has served as her attorney in the past.

Nov. 4: A Tulsa World story reports that ORU’s total liabilities more than doubled and its expenses outpaced revenues by $73 million during the past 14 years. Between 1993 and 2006, ORU recorded only two years with a positive balance: 1993 and 1995, the World reports.

Nov. 6: U.S. Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, announces he is investigating generous salaries, luxury cars, private jets and other perks provided to six televangelists, including three on ORU’s board of regents. Those three are Benny Hinn, of Grapevine, Texas; Kenneth Copeland, of Newark,Texas; and Creflo Dollar, of College Park, Ga.

Nov. 8: The Tulsa World reports ORU raised $8.8 million since 2001 for a student center that was never built. ORU refuses to release records related to the student center, but says about half the funds were spent on demolishing an existing building, relocating departments, utility work and work on Fred Creek.

Nov. 17: Richard Roberts says another minister known for prophecies told him six months ago he would endure a “major storm” but would come through it. Roberts also issues a detailed rebuttal to 35 allegations in the lawsuit.

Nov. 19: More than 80 percent of ORU faculty members polled during a faculty assembly say they do not want Richard Roberts to continue as president of the university.

Nov. 21: Matthew Schwoegler, 19, denies having a sexual, romantic or inappropriate relationship with Lindsay Roberts. Schwoegler acknowledged he was the underage male referenced in Cantees’ report. He dated the Robertses’ youngest daughter, Chloe, for several years. Schwoegler said Lindsay Roberts was like a “second mother” to him.

A Tulsa World story details two years’ worth of e-mails allegedly sent to Richard Roberts by Cantees. The e-mails urge Roberts to use “voters and infl uence” he controls to reap favors for Oral Roberts University. Roberts said he ignored much of Cantees’ advice.

Three additional lawsuits are filed against ORU by students and a former accountant.

The accountant claims he was not allowed to question expenditures by the Roberts family for personal items and that he was directed to defraud the Internal Revenue Service and Oklahoma Tax Commission.

Nov. 23: Richard Roberts resigns as president of ORU, days before regents were to meet and vote on whether to retain him as president. Roberts remains as CEO of the Oral Roberts Evangelistic Association.

“I love ORU with all my heart. I love the students, faculty, staff and administration and I want to see God’s best for all of them,” Roberts said in a letter to the board.

Nov. 28: Yukon businessman Mart Green announces his family plans to give $70 million to ORU if the school agrees to financial reforms, changes in the board of regents and greater transparency. Green gives $8 million unconditionally and says $62 million will follow if ORU accepts his proposal. Green’s family founded the Hobby Lobby chain of craft stores.

ORU’s regents vow to separate ORU from OREA legally and financially, but say the two organizations will retain a spiritual connection.

They refuse to release findings from an outside investigation of the school and con- firm that Lindsay Roberts resigned in October as a spiritual regent of ORU.

Also, Richard Roberts tells ORU students at a chapel service that God told him to resign.

Roberts said he initially resisted the instructions but said God told him if he resigned, the school would be blessed “supernaturally.” Dec. 5: Evangelist Pat Robertson writes a letter to ORU offering his help. Four administrators from Regent University, of which Robertson is president, visit ORU to offer their advice.

Dec. 6: Kenneth Copeland submits fi nancial information requested by Grassley as part of Grassley’s probe into spending practices of six evangelists.

Dec. 11: The Tulsa World reports that Dollar has resigned from ORU’s board of regents while Hinn has lost his status as a voting member of the board. Both had refused to respond to Grassley’s inquiry.

Dec. 17: Parties in the ORU lawsuit choose former Oklahoma Supreme Court Justice Daniel Boudreau as their mediator. Tulsa County District Judge Rebecca Nightengale had granted an earlier request by ORU and the administrators to require mediation.

Dec. 18: ORU announces that another evangelist, Jesse Duplantis, has resigned from the board of regents.

Dec. 19: The Tulsa World reports that Green has proposed a “shared governance” structure for ORU, in which faculty, staff and others would participate with regents in important decisions involving the university. ORU declines comment on Green’s proposal.

First !!!

Jesse Duplantis is a true man of God and shouldn't be lumped in with all the ORU mess.

Richard, Lindsay and Oral Roberts need to step away from the University and completly resign.

Something Positive And Uplifting:

Jesus came and died to set the captives free. Even now, scales are beginning to fall from people's eyes, and they are seeing Truth. Though they are, and will be, in sorrow and grief discovering the apostacy they have partaken in, soon that sorrow will become joy, knowing they have escaped the very pits of hell itself! More and more will be delivered and set free from the heresy and lying signs and wonders movement that has invaded the church.. Those who are truly called and chosen are waking up as if from a deep sleep, a nightmare.. They are being set free from the deception and delusion, i.e. witchcraft, that has been allowed to infect their very souls. God is here, and is bringing His children out of the hands of the wicked... the rest of you will follow these men straight into acceptance of the lawless one foretold to rise. But for those who's heart is only towards God, who want nothing more, we will escape. The rest will be chasing the delusion, the signs and wonders.. Time is running out.... History is barreling to it's conclusion.

Now judgement has come to the pulpits, next it will hit the pews. I'm already cleaning my house, have been for some time now. One thing I do know... if your preacher is telling you we are about to enter into the most supernaturally powerful time christianity has ever seen, or some such jargon... you better run like the wind! Get out of there! No signs will save you, only FAITH in the Word!

You are about to see God seemingly remove His hand of protection and presence off of us. You will cry out and not see Him, this is the season we are entering. My prayer is that even when I don't see Him or feel Him, that I will have enough Faith to still believe. This is the test.... God is sifting the hearts and souls of men. I know He's real, He doesn't have to give me a thing, I have His Word! Heck, that's all I need! Whatever comes, I'm determined to finish my race! Please say an honest prayer and ask God to reveal the hearts of the men you look to to lead you and teach you, the ones your hearts are so open towards to recieve from, and also to reveal any wrong doctrine you may have recieved, then listen to what God tells you. It's okay to mess up and get off the path, we all do it. What's not okay is knowing the truth, and then denying it to keep following a lie. Yes, it is hard to admit you were wrong, but it's something you just have to go through, repent and also forgive yourself. I still work on that one lol

For those who defect out, there are many great resources and groups out here for you, to help you through the pain and get you through to the other side.

Nothing will stop what's to come... those who think they can fight it are very blind and have been lied to, and are lying to others.

2 Things~

~~

1. I'm watching this story, and will follow it for some time. There's a great deal to learn from this situation. This article is undoubtedly superfluous in some eyes, but it gives a welcome summary. It's easy for the details to get lost in public memory. Thanx Tulsa World!~

~

2. This is the most fascinating web community I've ever witnessed. The faithful posters on this board have bonded in an amazing fashion. It makes me wish I was a Sociologist. Wow!

Outstanding Post!~

~

One of the important questions the ORU debacle has answered for me is~

~

Does bad doctrine cause serious problems?~

Clearly, the answer is YES!~

~

The Word of Faith gibberish was always nonsense to most of us, but many considered it harmless nonsense.

~

While not becoming the sort who embrace every controversy, we need to put a halt to heresy. It's time to pay more attention to discerning between disputable matters and those burning issues that can lead people astray.~

~

Thanks ORU, Thanks Televangelists, you've lifted the scales from many eyes!

#1 -I agree, Jesse is excellent; he shouldnt be lumped in.

He simply resigned because as he stated he could not have the time to minister and serve responsively on the board any longer with his intense ministry responsibilies.

I commend George Pearsons for setting up the Chairman's council; thank you for your foresight and vision. And thank you Jesse for your years of serive on the board; thanks to all for your faitfulness. Now is the time for action and we are seeing it happen; I believe they are getting the job done and ORU's best days are just ahead. Stop critizing with all of your negativity; go ORU, full speed ahead!

and the Board of Regents of ORU would like to thank all of our partners and friends who have sown into our ministries this year during 2007, the year of fulfillment.I also want to thank those of you in particular who sowed your lucky $77 offering into our ministry in 2007, the year of fulfillment, completion, overflow, and blessing. Remember, you’ve sown into good ground, and you can expect a good harvest of blessings, increase, and favor from the seed that you’ve sown.

.

Don’t forget, be sure to sow your $88 offering at the first of the New Year; remember, 8 is the number of new beginnings, and 2008 is the year of new beginnings, favor,

promotion, and blessing.

.

Send your final 2007 offering today to seal your favor, fulfillment, completion, overflow,

and blessing for the year 2007; otherwise, you might not get it and your breakthrough might not happen.

.

Also, if you send your lucky $88 offering at 8:08am on the first of year, I want to remind you that your setting yourself up and positioning yourself for a *double* impact of blessing, favor, and promotion in the year of new beginnings. Let’s go for the double in 2008! Together we can do it!

.

And for those of you who send an offering of at least $888, in combination with your first fruits offering for 2008, you’ll receive our special “New Beginnings” scripture- blessing- ark- of- the- covenant replica with scripture verses you can confess each day as you pray over your promotion and increase in order to seal your New Beginnings Blessings.

.

Maybe you’ve been through some things in the past; maybe you’ve been through some tough times. I understand. I’ve been there. I know how you feel. But I want to tell you today, that this upcoming year is the year of New Beginnings, the year of blessing and favor, the year that will begin a new season and a new cycle of promotion and increase for you in your life, your family, your finances, your job, your health, and your relationships.

.

And don't forget to send your special Valentine's offering on Feb 14th to secure your blessings with your special someone.

.

Don't forget in March, sow your special St Patty's day offering and watch how favor comes upon you and your family.

.

Most importantly, sow your extra sacrificial Easter offering in April; this is perhaps one of the greatest offerings you can give during the first half of 2008. Why? Because when you sow into the resurrection you are declaring that you as his chosen child will experience favor, blessing, anointing and empowerment and a resurrection of those things which are needed in your life. A resurrection of family, finance, health, and relationship issues that will bring the anointing, favor, and increase to you and your loved ones.

.

So send your final year end offering of $77 today, and don’t forget to send your $888 offering at 8:08am on the 1st of the year, and be blessed as you watch your blessings of favor, increase, and promotion take place in the year of New Beginnings!

.

And until then, may you be blessed with the joy and peace of the blessings of the season of the holly days, and may the greetings of the season be yours as you are blessed in abundance. Holli Happy Days!

Richard and Lindsay Roberts gave in to the intoxicating drug of power. They are human as we all are and are allowed to choice well or poorly. They made the choice to abuse the power - Christian, Buddhist, Hindu, Scientologist, Evangelical, Orthodox, Jew, Muslim - they all point to the same tenate of reciprocity - you reap what you sow.

I am deeply concerned that it has taken so long for people at ORU to do something about the Roberts inexcusable abuse of power.

Patti Roberts (Richard Roberts first wife) wrote a book, Ashes to Gold decades ago after her divorce from Roberts detailing the very misuse of monies and power that have swirled in the papers since October 2007. Why didn't someone listen to Patti Roberts then? It is logical to assume that outside agencies, internal committees should have investigated THEN.

Perhaps ORU's governing board is as much to blame for this abuse of power at the university as the Robert's family.

Accountability is critical when dealing with humans and apparently more so with religious ones, The Roberts behavior has become a superb argument for evolution - survival of the richest.

I am grieved by the Roberts total disregard for other people's money. They were fed this prosperity line for most of their adult lives and decided to let you - us support it with our money. Pretty slick.

I wonder if Richard has ever worked side by side a child who is hungry, does not have a food to go home to, dirty clothes, wounded, suicidal, single parents, financially strapped, hopeless.

He and his wife had a nanny for three children??? Are you kidding me - I have been a single mother of 6 - alone raising my kids. Working, helping them, driving them to all their activities, meeting all their physical and emotional needs as best I can.

I think he and his wife's style of living and misappropriation of funds is pathetic. I have heard some say they might actually go to prison - but what could be worse than already having to live with each other?

I am a grad who is glad to see some reforms coming to ORU. The school is encouraging us to return for Homecoming in February, but I'm concerned that those who come may be in for some high pressure fundraising. This is the time for those who have been away to have a chance to see the school again for ourselves, talk with students and faculty, and see for ourselves if the school is still worthy of support -- but not to be subjected to fundraising armtwisting.

If there are any alum out there who are planning to go or not planning to go, please post and give your thoughts on this, thanks! Rob

Good post Sojourner. If you read the Bible you know that God tells us there will be false prophets who will try to turn us from God to worship other gods (money, possessions). In Revelations He tells us He is making His Bride (the church) ready. That means putting her back on track. He provides warnings to us not to believe people who speak of signs and wonders, but to believe HIM. We are not here to only gain wealth and material possessions, we are here to expand God's Kingdom through love and kindness to others. As we are told "pure and undefiled religion is to visit the widows and orphans in their affliction and keep ourselves unblemished from the world". Greed is a terrible thing. It dehumanizes us and moves us further from God.

I wish ORU God's blessings as it moves toward God and away from the greed fest it participated in. God has sent an angel in the Green family to help make another group of His people ready.

Rob, if you haven't been going to Homecoming at all since graduating, or supporting ORU, don't bother now. The attitude you have about "armtwisting" for donations says a lot, & ORU doesn't need you. If you don't want to give, fine. You don't sound that interested in the place, so ignore it.

BOR Update:

"GREEN-LIKE" CHANGES

'GREEN-LIKE" Financial package

WITHOUT THE 'UNCERTAINTY' OF Green

What I'm hearing confirms what

"Go, Titans, Go Green Country"

has posted.

The BOR is split, but strongly coming out in favor of a hodge-podge that will be "sold" as "Green-like changes, with a Green-like package of financing, but without the 'unknown' of Green.

--"Unknown" meaning -- he wants a wholesale cleaning of the BOR.

--They do not want that.

This will be "sold", pushed hard, as "reformist" when it is in reality more of the same.

The BOR faction backing this is the "stand-pat" faction which knows they'd be swept out in any meaningful changes.

--They fear any major changes would be seen as an indictment of their previous stewardship as members of the BOR, with possible legal consequence down the line

-- in either existing, or future, lawsuits.

In effect, they're covering their posteriors.

They also represent the thinking of RR, who seems to be hoping for an on-going, non-administrative tv "face of ORU" role under the new regime.

(Which would justify socking ORU with some of his TV expenses.)

There is a belief this can be sold to alumni and donors as a reformist "new day' for ORU

I really don't see what Word of Faith theology has to do with this. I graduated from Rhema and never heard any teaching that condoned leading by intimidation, cooking the books, or exploitation. The same argument was made by opponents of WOF theology when Jim Bakker fell. It wasn't Kenneth Hagin's fault that Bakker boinked his babysitter and sold hotel rooms he didn't have. It was Bakker's fault. And it was RR's fault that 80% of the faculty voted against him, obviously viewing his leadership as flawed and unethical.
