ORU reinstates one professor
Hinn
By APRIL MARCISZEWSKI World Staff Writer

Complete Coverage:
Read the latest ORU stories, view the lawsuit and other documents and watch slide shows and video.
The lawsuit by two other plaintiffs remains active. Also, two evangelists resign from ORU's board.
One of the three former Oral Roberts University professors who sued the university for wrongful termination last fall has been reinstated in a settlement reached late Thursday.
Jo Anne Deaton, who with John Tucker represents all the defendants except former ORU President Richard Roberts, told the Tulsa World that the defendants had reached a settlement with former professor John Swails. The details of the settlement, which came after a full day of negotiations, were not released.
However, The Associated Press reported that Swails was reinstated to his position at ORU, and the Tulsa World independently confirmed that information.
The remaining plaintiffs, Tim and Paulita Brooker, have not settled, and a hearing on motions in the case is scheduled for Friday, Deaton said.
Frank Hagedorn, an attorney for Roberts, said, "Dr. Roberts' response is that the university settled with Dr. Swails, and he supports the university."
Meanwhile Thursday, two more business regents resigned from ORU's governing board.
Business Regent I.V. Hilliard, co-founder of New Light Christian Center Church in Texas, and Regent Emeritus Benny Hinn, who until recently was a business regent, resigned, an ORU press release says.
Hilliard said in a letter to ORU that he remains committed to the school's vision and new direction, the release says.
U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, the top Republican on the Senate Finance Committee, sent inquiries in November to the leaders of six televangelism ministries, including Hinn, to see whether their spending complies with tax laws and the organizations' tax-exempt statuses.
Last month, ORU confirmed that Hinn had lost his voting ability on its board and was named regent emeritus.
The press release on Thursday said that in a letter, Hinn wished ORU success in its endeavors.
Last month, two other business regents resigned: Creflo Dollar, founder and senior pastor of World Changers Church International in Georgia, and Jesse Duplantis, evangelist and founder of Jesse Duplantis Ministries in Louisiana. Dollar also is being investigated by Grassley.
Also last month, Regent Emeritus Richard Pearson was named a business regent.
Lindsay Roberts, Richard Roberts' wife, resigned as a lifetime spiritual regent after the three former professors sued ORU, Richard Roberts and others in October.
According to ORU's bylaws, the board must consist of 18 to 44 members. The board of business regents must have between 11 and 37 members. Business regents serve one-, two- and three-year terms, and new members are elected each year to replace those whose terms have expired, the bylaws say.
Also Thursday, ORU announced that its board will meet Monday and Tuesday to look at "organizational activities" and to evaluate "strategic opportunities," the press release says.
"Throughout this ongoing process, the board will seek out opportunities that advance the long-term financial viability of the university as well as ensure that the university will stay true to its founding vision," the release says.
ORU spokesman Jeremy Burton said he was unable Thursday to obtain more information about the meeting.
The board has yet to announce whether it will accept an offer of $70 million from the family of Oklahoma City businessman Mart Green or an offer of help from Regent University, which was founded by Christian broadcasting pioneer Pat Robertson.

Bring in real academics and secularize.
Get rid of the Honor Code, which has nothing to do with education.
Get rid of the dress code, which has nothing to do with education.
Change the name, get rid of the Roberts stench.
PS - the above is a pipe dream.

Poll: What immediate changes need to be made in order to make ORU the school it should become?
----
--remove the rest of the televangelists from the board
--sell the tv station
--sell the compound
--get rid of the jet (i think this has already been done)
--move away from the bankrupt WOF theology
--rename the university
--accept the green's 62 mil
--begin to build back the endowment that was squandered by the roberts family
--hire a true academic as the next president
--make sure there are proper checks and balances in place on those in charge so this mess never happens again
--pay raises for the faculty as money permits
that ought to be a pretty good start

JUST A START
'THE WHOLE BOARD NEEDS TO GO." -- FORMER REGENT
---------
Former regent Harry McNevin, who resigned 20 years ago over what he says was excessive spending by Oral and Richard Roberts, said Thursday's resignations couldn't have come soon enough.
"The whole board needs to go," McNevin said. "I see (the university) as a corporation belonging to the Robertses."
----------
Of course ORU belongs to the Roberts family.
It's finances are the perrsonal "piggy bank" of this imperial, royal family whose spending and lavish life-style would make an Arab sheik blush.
-------
RE- ARRANGING THE DECK CHAIRS ON THE TITANIC
-------
The ship still heads towards the iceberg, and the steps so far are merely rearranging the deck chairs. The course remains unchanged.
-----
OLD ORDER vs. NEW ORDER
Mart Green offers a new order of openness, transparency, rational leadership, an end to the culture of fear -- and change.
The old order -- in which RR, who holds veto power over a compliant BOR -- opposes Green tooth and nail.
----
BOR TO DITCH GREEN?
---
They fear the changes he will bring --- and are now ready to
ditch Green for essentially, more of the same.
This lack of a truly fresh start at this pivotal point will lead to the eventual end of ORU.
MISSED CHANCES
It's a missed chance which will prove fatal in the long-run.
BOTTOM LINE
The bottom line is: the Robertses will never give up control.

Re: Poll -- I totally agree with all the above (FDF, Insider, and Jack) and would add amending the bylaws. I couldn't believe that such narcissistic wording would appear in such documents. I quote regarding the spiritual regents: "Chairman and Vice Chairman are the spiritual prophets, seers, pastors, leaders and ministers of the Corporation their teaching......must be followed by the Corporation leadership and staff." Sure hope the candidates for the ORU President position read the fine print. Separating ORU/OREA isn't going to be an easy task. If after the split, the "spiritual connection" that is suppose to remain is what is described above -- there is no split. Did that make sense?

So I guess it doesn't matter if the allegations in the lawsuit were true. But I would think that whoever is still supporting RR, the tv station, and OREA would want to know.
--
If the University doesn't accept Green's offer, I would be concerned. This would indicate that RR and others on the board do not want to lose any more power. And I don't think Green is in it for any power-trip but just wants the best for the Uni.

The sad truth is that the Roberts "own" ORU and will probably never relinquish control. Nice to see more of the "flim-flammers" jump ship, however, but until Roberts gives up control, there'll be more of the same. Tulsa doesn't need this nonsense.

What happened to "extortion, intimidation and blackmail" (adjectives used to describe the professors)? The settlement suggests that those allegations were false. ORU has a real chance with Mr. Green. His recommendations should be very interesting and assure the viability of ORU. If the BOR elects his proposals the other issues in all probability will eventually fade into history and ORU will succeed.

Duplanits, Dollar have left. Hinn now completely gone. Hilliard gone. This is an answer to prayer. There is no room for those who buy and sell the blessings on an almighty God. Those who see themselves as deserving kings, living off the sacrifices of God's people, Those remaining on the BOR need to repent.
We pray for repentence, reformation and regeneration of the ORU family.

Ah a day in the life of the snake people. The reptile unhinges it;s jaw than swallows something large and in this case, the swallowed swails plops out relatively unharmed. The snake probably senses a bit of sensation unusual, moves to a safe place and sheds his skin. Ah the Miracle of regeneration Beware of Eggs, mongoose or bigger reptiles. Like a big green Pyton. I really do not think that any of these changes really matter. Not ALL Christians are sleeping. Some realize the false teachings that have been promoted at ORU, not only by the leadership, but also by the BOR. There are insiders like myself that know that Oral planted seeds of false doctrine long ago and that mismanagement was evident way back in the 60's. Christians who are awake should stay away from the whole thing. It would be better for ORU to become totally secular, than for it to continue to be a beacon for heresy. As long as the Roberts "own" ORU, I believe it is futile to try to FIX it. The idea of a Christian university, shaping the lives of Christian students - body, soul & spirit - was a good one . . . but ORU is so far from that.

Well the donors money finally paid for something other than RR and LR lavish lifestyle. They paid to shut-someone up so that RR and LR could CONTINUE their lavish lifestyle. By the way the victim of LR "alleged" attentions was not 18 at the time of the offense so why is this being referred to as child abuse..... If it was a man with an underage girl it would be called statutory rape in VA!

Abandon the flawed prosperity doctrine theology and embrace the solid theology taught by BJ Daugherty and Rick Warren. Take the gag order off of the solid theology faculty that is out there and let them be your rudder to keep the school on solid footing so it can be recognized by established demonistations.

There are still some strong members on the BOR. Does that mean they should stay. I can't be that JUDGE. They were the ones watching while all this was happenng over the last few years. Does that make them bad people, I doubt it, just fell into wanting to belive something was good that wasn't and did not do due diligence
What needs to happen? #2 you are WRONG. Make it secular and it goes down the tubes. Every student knows when they come there of the rules of the campus. Don't like em don't come. I went there, my wife went there, my kids went and go there. SO SHUT UP ABOUT THE RULES.
What it needs is a strong Christian President who is a good Business man. Some one who understands finances and can go out and raise the money through contacts, relationships and donors willing and waiting to see strong leadership instilled.
The only question I have is why doesn't the faculty have one of their votes to see how they feel about Mart Greens money, so the BOR knows how they feel, just like they did with the vote concerning RR.
I believe in what the school stands for and am praying the right decisions are made.

#2 FDF. Why do you call your change suggestions at ORU a pipe dream. Today there are still Pipe Carriers in Indian spirituality, many of these Pipe Carriers are Sundancers and very serious people. I know why I think you say that but I would like an outsiders view as I do not think you are a Pipe Carrier. I appreciate your educating me on this subject and will sppreciate your thoughts on this matter. Our spiritual Pipe has been compared from Moses staff to crack pipes so I really am interested in this subject. Of curse most christians have no respect for our spiritual Pipe and they really know nothing about it as they are outsiders looking in with their christian thoughts. Who knows the teachings of the Pipe may be some words of God?

...............The reason is because faculty doesn't decide on financial things for a university. A Board of Regents or Trustees does that job.

I find it interesting that some of you see this as the "professor settling", but not as the "college settling".
None of this changes what so many people know happened. They need to go ahead and settle with the Brookers too.
Then they need to do everything the Green family is asking, take the money, cut the ties with ORM and that family of hypocrites, kick every regent who stood by and watched this nonsense off the board, get a real president in there (one who isn't in it for personal gain, which eliminates pretty much everybody who's been tied up in this sideshow so far), a real board of regents, and finally really turn that place into what it should be...instead of Daddy's little money making scheme!

, tulsa (1/11/2008 9:47:04 AM)
If ORM/OREA/ORU and the BOR of the various Non Profit (NP) Corps. all put their heads together, they can easily discover a number of new strategies which can be utilized to extract the maximum funds possible from the donor base:
.
1. Divesture of For Profit enterprises. Example: KCM is currently successful at selling Andalusian horses for 15K each according to one post. How can El Rancho Fe Inc.’s profit be increased to its fullest potential? Answer: by divesting it from other affiliates with KCM, selling shares or LP units, and letting the shareholders/limited partners focus on maximizing value with the help of Bear Stearns, Goldman Sachs, Merrill Lynch as consultants; normally in the corporate world this is how the process works. Preferred stock can be issued to the high ranking members of the organization, eg RR’s daughters Jordan/Chloe etc., Kenneth’s son John, with special voting rights and privileges; family members can retain 51% of the voting rights and retain power; convertible preferred stock can be issued, convertible debentures as well, the possibilities are numerous.
.
In short, If OREA/ORU/ORM/TRACO ADV/KCM/BHM/ etc etc etc hired consultants such as Goldman Sachs/Merril Lynch/Arthur Anderson, they would be able to effectively spin off the proper Corporations into properly functioning enterprises to maximize profit to the fullest potential. The BOR could still retain power in their current enterprises they control such as El Ranch Fe, Pitcherman, Integrity Media, Security Petrol, Victory Eagle Marketing, Traco Advertising Inc., etc etc, but the financial recordkeeping would simply be done in accordance with GAAP. Hence, no Senate investigation with questions from Senator Grassley or others would even arise.
.
2. Interlocking directorates. Currently, a number of board members of one NP Corp exist as board member of another NP Corp. For example, John Copeland sits on the board of Mac Hammond Ministries, according to an earlier post.
.
How can these interlocking directorates be most effectively structured to extract the maximum funds possible from multiple donor bases? What strategies can be utilized to get the most number of board members on other NP Corp boards? If proper strategies are put into place, the use of interlocking board members can be effective in generating potentially large amounts of income.
.
3. Strategic Alliances. Some have commented on these posts that Brigham Young U has an excellent undergraduate program and employers do not make prejudical assumptions when hiring and promoting employees.
.
What strategic alliances can ORU form with Bringham Young U, Regents U, and others? Research and development grants can sometimes hinge on these alliances; for instance, consider the Research Triangle in Raleigh-Durham. What strategies can ORU effectively engage in to secure research and development grants with other universities? Even one or two research grants on a major project can be extremely lucrative. What strategic alliances and partnerships can ORU form with other colleges nationwide, and in Canada as well? All of these questions should be addressed.
.
4. Overseas joint ventures and agreements. The rise of China, India, Brazil and others is a classic example of what NOT to do in a NP Corp in the US today, when it comes to NP Corps such as ORM. The days of doing business on a national level are over; an organization can no longer limit itself to the United States. We live in a global economy, and as such NP Corps must effectively exploit opportunities overseas to extract funds from donor bases as much as possible. We can not sit idly by while others capture the donations from overseas donor bases. What overseas markets can be exploited to their fullest potential? What corporate structures need to set up? What business ventures need to be launched, and to which target audiences overseas? Which markets have the most favorable income to market penetration ratio? These are all questions the BOR needs to address; in short, a world of opportunities awaits for the BOR of ORU.
.

#19 I understand that. My thought was it might be good for the BOR to know how the faculty feeeeel about the situation. After all if you read the news paper you will see a few days ago that it stated the faculty will file suit if the BOR doesn't accept the money. Who or where that came from it didn't say. But if i were the BOR in THIS situation, I would WANT to know how the faculty feels about it.
It was just an thought. BUT thanks for your input
