$62 million for ORU
Mart Green addresses a gathering in the Oral Roberts University chapel on Monday during which the university announced it will accept a $62 million donation from Green’s family. STEPHEN HOLMAN / Tulsa World

The additional gift from the Green family will come with major changes in ORU administration.
Oral Roberts University’s board of regents voted unanimously Monday to accept an additional $62 million from the Green family, which founded the Hobby Lobby and Mardel Christian and educational supply stores.
An ORU spokesman said in late October that ORU was $52.5 million in debt, and the school accepted an unconditional $8 million from the Greens in late November.
The second pool of money from the family comes with major changes to ORU’s governing board and to the way the university is run.
“We felt like the ideas that we brought were more valuable than $62 million,” Mart Green, spokesman for the family, said at a press conference at ORU on Monday.
ORU began as a “founder’s school” but will adopt “21st century governance,” in which employees will have a say in decisions, Green said.
Providing input will get employees involved at ORU, and that will empower them, Green said. “That is my gift — empowering people,” he said.
The family decided to offer to help ORU after hearing about the school’s troubles after a wrongful termination lawsuit was filed by three former professors in
October.
“We really grieved in our heart for the sake of the students,” Green told students and ORU employees on Monday before speaking at a press conference about the planned changes. The students and employees cheered and gave a standing ovation when ORU Regents Chairman George Pearsons announced that the board had accepted the Greens’ offer.
From regents to trustees ORU’s board of regents will be replaced with a board of trustees, initially made up of 13 members named by the Greens. Mart Green will be chairman and, contrary to his statement in November that two Greens would sit on the board, he will be the only one. He wanted to be involved in ORU because his family “felt like financial stewardship needed to be shored up,” he said.
ORU founder Oral Roberts, 89, will be a lifetime trustee.
Others who will be appointed trustees are Don H. Argue, chancellor of a Christian university; Fredrick A. Boswell Jr., an ORU graduate, Bible translator and executive director of the Summer Institute of Linguistics; Stanley M. Burgess, a professor at Pat Robertson’s Regent University; Hal Donaldson, editor in chief of the magazine Today’s Pentecostal Evangel; the Rev. Robert Hoskins, founder of the Christian missions organization Affect Destiny Teams; Lynette (Troyer) Lewis, a motivational speaker and ORU graduate; Ron Luce, founder of Teen Mania Ministries; Charles W. McKinney, an administrator at Florida Gulf Coast University; Russell P. Spittler, retired provost and professor of Fuller Theological Seminary; R. Lamar Vest, an executive with the American Bible Society; and William (Billy) Wilson, executive director of the International Center for Spiritual Renewal and executive producer of Voice of Salvation Ministries, according to information from Green and ORU.
ORU’s board of business regents will nominate six of its members for the board of trustees. The Green family, in consultation with Oral Roberts, will choose three of those nominees to serve as trustees, according to the Greens’ proposal, which ORU’s board of regents accepted.
Six remaining trustee positions will remain open.
The board of trustees will decide how to spend the $62 million gift, Green said.
A new board of reference will be formed and will be made up of current ORU business regents who wish to serve and others chosen by the Green family, according to the proposal and Green.
Members of this board won’t attend meetings or vote but will serve as ORU ambassadors and as ORU’s institutional memory, Green said.
Pearsons said he will not serve on the board of reference but will return to his work as pastor of Eagle Mountain International Church in Fort Worth, Texas.
ORU president Richard Roberts, the son of ORU’s founder, resigned from the presidency in November after a lawsuit and its fallout raised allegations that Roberts misspent ORU money and promoted a “culture of fear” through his leadership.
Roberts denied wrongdoing.
He remains the CEO of Oral Roberts Ministries.
On Monday, regents voted unanimously to name Richard Roberts president emeritus to honor his work during 15 years as president, Pearsons said.
Regent Billy Joe Daugherty, pastor of Victory Christian Center in Tulsa, has served as ORU’s interim president.
Last week, the board of regents named Regent Glenda Payas to lead a committee to determine ORU’s presidential selection process. Now, the board of trustees will decide on the process, according to the Green family proposal.
The new board will form a search committee, create an “opportunity statement” and “presidential profile” to guide the search, and, likely, nominate a candidate to the board of trustees.
Reaction
ORU freshman Twyla Reimer considers the Greens’ donation as from God and said the assistance will benefit students, who came to ORU with trust and confidence in the school and now have a basis for renewed confidence, she said.
Junior Alisa Gerrish said she was excited to see, in the Greens’ assistance, a conclusion.
The turmoil of the lawsuit resulted in Oral Roberts’ return to the school from his home in California. Gerrish said that without the events of the past few months, that “blessing” wouldn’t have occurred.
After Pearsons and Green announced that the board had accepted the Greens’ proposal, Gerrish made her way to the front of ORU’s chapel to Richard Roberts and told him she would miss him.
Later, Richard Roberts said he and his father agree with the board’s decision and support the Greens.
ORU’s mission, vision and founding purpose of evangelism will not change, Richard Roberts said, and neither will ORU’s name.
The money from the Greens will lift ORU out of debt and send a public message that the school is not only academically but financially strong, he said.
“There’s a lot of things we’ve had on the drawing board that we’ve not been able to do because of finances,” he said.
ORU professor Evan Culp said the lack of debt will allow ORU to focus on education and missions.
More details
ORU’s regents will meet again Tuesday to work out the details of the Green family plan, officials said. Pearsons said he expects to remain chairman of the board for a couple of weeks while ORU transitions to its new governance system.

This is all great news for the university. A big "thank you" to the
Green family.
Only one problem here, the board voted Richard Roberts president emeritus
"to honor his work during 15 years as president". BIG MISTAKE !
HONOR HIM FOR WHAT? He and lindsey pillaged university funds and almost
destroyed the university.

This gift is truly from God. The university would have to have had an annual budget surplus of over a million dollars for decades in order to climb out from under its debt without a sizable donation. I don't think the Greens are being too demanding either. Their approach avoids the old "toss money at the problem", and seeks to address the money management issues the school has had.

Oh brother. Have you guys actually read the Green Proposal? It's on the ORU front page.
Mart Green and his "family" just bought themselves a university for sale.

A START --- BUT THAT'S ALL.
So Richard Roberts is president emeritus of ORU?
So the by-laws giving Oral and Richard veto power haven;t been rescinded?
So Richard is still speaking as the voice of ORU -- announcing, as reported above...
----
“There’s a lot of things we’ve had on the drawing board that we’ve not been able to do because of finances,” he said.
---
Gee whiz, Richard. You mean spending the endowment on your luxury life-style and running the debt up to 52 million during your time has crimped the finances?
When did you wake up to that?
And for that he's president emeritus? And remains the face -- and voice-- of ORU?
And what do you mean, we? Hasn't it dawned on you you are no longer head honcho?
--------
Talk about unclear signals!
----------
The "new" leadership under Green needs to STOP PANDERING to the Roberts, shake things up and MOVE ON!

Too bad Mart Green didn't demand the exile of OR and RR back to Palm Springs, or ANYWHERE out-of-state, and change the university name. Nothing's really changed except more money being dumped into the coffers. At least some of the flim-flammers on the BOR jumped ship. That's a good thing.

WHY THE BOR/ OR / RR AGREED TO GREEN'S OFFER
The word is the threat of a class-action lawsuit forced the "old order" to accept Green's offer.
The legal jeopardy of not doing so was simply too great.
The offer was so clearly and demonstably the best choice. There was no viable second choice..
The threats of a class-action suit, made on these boards -- and undoubtedly in stronger language in private--- gave them no choice.
So now the change has been made.
The KEY now is to send a clear signal that it's a new day for ORU.
This CAN'T be done with RR as the VOICE -- AND FACE -- and PRESIDENT EPERITUS --of ORU.
The OUTGOING BOR's last action named RR as "president emeritus," showing their true loyalty to the Roberts clan.
Their action should be IMMEDIATELY rescinded.
Talk about mixed signals! RR speaking for ORU as president emeritus tells the world nothing has been changed.
It may save fact for the Roberts family --- but it does NO GOOD
for the "new" ORU.
New BOR --- RESCIND THE TITLE OF PRESIDENT EMERITUS
---NAME A NEW SPOKESPERSON FOR ORU and get RR out of the picture.
A lot of people are wathing. It's time to send a clear signal.

Praise the Lord! This is a great day for ORU. A "face lift" if you will. My hope is they won't stop with the BOR, but will replace some of the upper management who allowed business dealings to happen that got ORU into this mess.
I realize the naysayers (FDF, etc.) on this board will continue to gripe and spread their venom, but I believe this is the hand of God working. ORU has an opportunity to shine like never before.
I'm going to work, so have a great day and put a smile on your face! Woo Hoo!

I am glad to see ORU shut the book on the old way of doing things. It will bolster its integrity as a University. Now it is in the hands of those who replace the old.
It's not surprising that some folks will never be satisfied. They are that way by their own choice and in their mind ORU can't do anything right. They're just a wagon of tin cans on a cobblestone street....noise and that's about it.

Different gifts are handed out by God to all belivers. All belivers don't have all the gifts. That's how the body is made up of different parts. Some believers are given a word from God but don't possess the gifts to lead it through complition. Some are leaders, some are teachers, some are exhorters.....May God's kingdom grow though the faithfulness of believers using their God given gifts and not what we are deceived in thinking that we have.

Jack (#6), "Emeritus" does not mean what you think it does. It is widely recognized as an honorary title for former or retired officers. There is no suggestion of any ongoing authority or power, and no one will see him as the voice or face of the current ORU.

Like Fifty Dollar Fine said: It looks like Mr. Green just bought himself a university!
The old regents have essentially been fired. And they deserve it, for failing to do their jobs.
Oral Roberts, who will turn 90 on Jan. 24, will be appointed a trustee for life. I suppose that rules out changing the name of the university, at least not in his remaining lifetime.
Documents filed by the OR Evangelistic Association show that the cash cow is no more. They spend more money on salaries and TV time than they raise in contributions. Now that Richard has resigned from ORU in disgrace, look for OREA to wind down gradually, existing for no reason other than to support Richard and Lindsay for life.
I don't see a bright future for Mr. Green's investment.

Read the article again.
If RR continues to be quoted as speaking out for ORU -- as in the article above -- he will be seen as the voice of ORU.
That's what needs to stop.
Then...full speed ahead, ORU.

Three of the new board are ORU grads. Ron Luce is an ORU grad.
--
Mr. McKinney's position with FGCU is an ombudsman for the students down there (that means he knows how to communicate with students). Lamar Vest has been the president of a Pentecostal institution, Lee College (now Lee University).
--
Hal Donaldson is more than just an editor of the General Council of the Assemblies of God's weekly newsmagazine; he is the founder of Convoy of Hope which helps poor people in the the USA, does work in USA's disaster areas and helps folks in poor areas of the world.
--
The others on the board know how a University should be run. Not a one of the board members have a WOF type ministry and/or pastor a mega sized church.
--
I think Mr. Green made some great choices in the new board.

It is good that George Pearsons has gone back to that church out in the country of Texas at the Kenneth Copeland Ministries compound near Newark on the shore of Eagle Mountain Lake. He only took the position of the Chair of the old BOR to be a yes-man for Oral and Richard Roberts.

Richard Roberts new honorary title of "president emeritus" is worth about as much as all of those honorary doctorate degrees he gave out to the Word of Faith preachers, most of whom would not even been able to earned a BA at ORU if they had attended there.
--
We will have to wait and see what happens with the lawsuit against Richard Roberts and the fact that all of the members of the old BOR at the time of the firing and/or not renewing of teaching contracts are going to be listed in the lawsuit, too. In some cases, the not renewing of a teaching contract is equal to the firing of the teacher, except it looks different on the resume of the teacher.

THE ADULTS ARE TAKING CHARGE
This is a good start.
The new BOR with Green as chairma, have their work cut out to change the cult of personality and climate of fear.
Their biggest challenge will be to replace the entrenched admin, many of whom owe their loyalty to RR.
They wrote th checks that drained the endowment.
They broke the piggy bank to let RR get at it.
People like Ellsworth and his clique.
RR's enablers in the admin must be swept out, and fresh, new faces brought in who will support the "new" ORU.
The cancer must be cut out in its entirety.
