Trustees aim for stability at ORU
DONOR
Mart Green:
His family has crafted a new plan of governance for ORU.

For more:
Read the latest ORU stories, view the lawsuit and other documents and watch slide shows and video.
The school's new board members begin their task with optimism.
When Oral Roberts University's new board of trustees convenes Jan. 30, almost an entirely new cast of people will become the ultimate voice of authority at the troubled school.
These are people saturated with knowledge and experience of shared governance, a desire to see spirituality remain central to students' experience, and respect for university founder Oral Roberts and the school's unique blend of academic, spiritual and physical education, according to interviews with eight of the 16 trustees. Their top priorities are choosing a new president, stabilizing ORU's finances and instituting shared governance.
Five of the trustees are ORU alumni, three are members of the current governing board and many others have extensive experience in leading colleges and Christian organizations. Absent are the prominent televangelists who populated the board of regents, which the board of trustees is replacing.
The changes stem from a new plan for ORU, crafted by Mart Green's family, which is donating $70 million to the school. The family founded the Hobby Lobby and Mardel Christian and
educational supply store chains.
The Greens' offer came after ORU announced in October that it was $52.5 million in debt. Former President Richard Roberts, who resigned Nov. 23, had been accused of misspending ORU and Oral Roberts Ministries money and of poorly leading the university, accusations that he denied. A lawsuit filed Oct. 2 by three former professors, who claimed they were wrongfully terminated, started the dramatic chain of events at the school.
Motivations:
Trustees said they accepted the Green family's offer to join the board because of their love for ORU, their appreciation for its graduates, its new potential and their desire to help.
The Rev. William (Billy) Wilson, the host of the weekly TV show "World Impact," said he thinks ORU might be the premier charismatic Christian university.
Trustee Freddy Boswell, an ORU alumnus and the executive director of Summer Institute of Linguistics International, wants to help ORU recover and regain respect, he said. He is joining the board on behalf of alumni, who depend on ORU's reputation.
Trustee Charles W. McKinney, the ombudsman at Florida Gulf Coast University, said the Greens' donation compelled him to serve on the board.
"I think it was very gracious on the part of the Green family to invest in kingdom work through ORU," McKinney said.
Trustee Stan Burgess, a professor at Regent University in Virginia, said he sees potential for ORU to become a major research university with world experts.
Trustee Ron Luce, an ORU alumnus who founded of Teen Mania Ministries, said he sees ORU's future "brighter than ever before."
The new governing board and new financial policies will help ORU regain the trust of alumni, who are "waiting to get on board, waiting to secure ORU's future," Luce said.
The changes will give alumni an invitation to donate to ORU to build an endowment and restore aging facilities, he said.
Shared
governance:
Green, who will be the chairman of the board of trustees, has described ORU as a "founder's school" that will transition to "21st-century governance."
Shared governance, required by the Green family plan and commonly practiced at colleges nationwide, defines the roles of trustees, administrators and professors, according to trustees Don Argue, the chancellor of Northwest University in Washington, and Russell P. Spittler, a retired administrator and professor at Fuller Theological Seminary.
Under shared governance, trustees choose a president, approve of new and revised policies and maintain the college's mission and financial health, the trustees said.
Administrators manage the university efficiently and with regard for the people involved, and they maintain facilities, Spittler said.
Faculty oversee academic programs, decide which professors receive tenure and set standards for graduation, Spittler and Argue said.

GOOD START. NOW FINISH THE HOUSE-CLEANING
A good start. But only a start.
The old admin of Roberts loyalists who infamously enabled the wild spending mentioned above need to be moved out, and replaced. as well as the BOR.
They have more influence on day-to-day events of the "new" ORU.,
Richard Robert's hand-piceked #2, David Ellsworth, who wrote the checks and broke the piggy bani to pay for the lavish, destructive spending of the Roberts ( Oral and RR) especially. He was "their man" at the checkbook.
The wrong-doing was largely financial and his hands are all over those questionable transactions.
These are good first steps, but in cutting out the cancerous tissues of the past, they must all be cut out.
Good start! Now finish the house-cleaning.

A complete change or direction and culture isn't an event.
It's a process. That process takes time and a real focus to make sure it stays on track.
These are good people in charge now, with a good plan.
However, it will be a challenge to implement the changes.
For that, they need a new team in key admin posts who are not participants in the wrong-doings of the past.
A clean-break and complete house cleaning at the upper level is needed.
I'm optimistic. The major steps seem to have already been taken.

#3 Well, I'm up before my wake time.. lol. I have to say though, Jack makes alot of sense. This didn't all happen in a vaccuum. So you get rid of the lavish spending President, televangelists, and clean out the BOR, yet you keep the money man and people who were aware and signing off on all of it? Why in the world would you do that? The Greens are billionaires. I'm sure they have or know new people they could bring in, people that they know and trust. That's what I'd do if I were the Green family. UNSTACK... then cut open a whole new deck of cards. jmo.. I have no idea how business works. I'm just chiming in. lolol.

No matter how much money is infused or how the people are shuffled, OR and RR are still pulling the strings.
Jack makes a lot of sense. Nothing hateful at all...just common sense.

Do you know him? you have been after his head for a long time. do you know some deep dark secret, or are you simply making comments from a macro level, not knowing any details. I simply find it funny that almost all of your messages mention him. did he steal your girlfriend when you were young?. hit you with a snowball?. it has to be something more than just throw him out with Roberts. come on fess up. you are obsessed with him

7 Are you still trying that tired old provocation?
So I'll repeat it again, since you seem to have a comprehension problem.
I'm a professional in the same field, and it's a disgrace to see someone abuse their professional position as he did, especially with donors money.
I'm a Christian, and it's a shame to see someone posing as a Christian cook the books of a so-called Christian organization, and make it the shame and disgrace it has become in many circles.
What kind of Christian testimony is that?
I could go on, but you get the picture, even if you may not comprehend it.

I know Jack. The guy is CFO of companies with affiliates in Europe.
You two -- 7 and 8 -- are pathetic.
But I guess Ellsworth is pretty ticked off about now.

I do agree with the above.
However, if Jack's in Europe, he hasn't a clue as to the facts about Ellsworth's, conduct, much less what's really going on, other than gossip. Either he has a personal grudge against Ellsworth for some reason, or he has some kind of compulsion for
nuveau "authority" from behind his keyboard. If he is a CFO as claimed, I would highly question his job performance, because he is so consumed & obsessed over something that doesn't involve him. There is a whole new board of trustees, with a lot more combined, accumulated experience than "Jack". Their decisions will hold a lot more weight than "Jack's". Jack, take your own advice = " complete change or direction and culture isn't an event.
It's a process. That process takes time and a real focus to make sure it stays on track."

Jack, How can you call yourself a Christian, and call someone else a non christion when you dont even know their heart. Jesus said they will know you by your love, but all you do is fire off hateful comments, with no substantiating support. You obviously have a hard heart about something. And what CFO in any muti million dollar company is up a 2 am every morning to respond to blogs and make comments to the Tulsa World. Jack you are as much a liar as you are a CFO. My guess is, you are the assistant manager at a convenience store. CFO=Convenience Food Operation. OK, maybe you arent a liar, simply CFO means something different to you.

Jack's statement, "I'm a Christian, and it's a shame to see someone posing as a Christian cook the books of a so-called Christian organization,"........
________________
Jack, you have no basis to make the claim of "cook the books", other than allegations & gossip from these boards. For all you know, that former "accountant" is trying to make some easy money for himself by shooting for a settlement. The court papers he filed showed he didn't know the difference between asset accounts, & maintenance accounts for facilities, & what should be put where, so his claims are highly questionable.

#14 The only thing Jack insights is irrational thinking. Those who know nothing, and fire off comments only try to insight emotional responses, thus Jack. He offers no detail, only his misguided emotional opinion, which leads me to believe he is an disgruntled ex-ORU employee. He obviously has an agenda, since he always, and I mean always, zero's in on one person. If Jack is such a big shot, why is he up every morning at 2am commenting on the blogs. Maybe he is sad and lonely. Maybe he needs to spend more time pulling the log out of his own eye. Or maybe he needs to get a life.

I understand and support the financial and governance changes taking place at ORU, but what about the spiritual environment? I'm concerned that the baby is being thrown out with the bath water. One of the things that has made ORU unique is its Charismatic influence. Are any steps being taken to ensure that this will continue, or is ORU headed toward becoming a Christian university in name only? Will the Spirit-filled aspect be maintained? What is the theological stance of Mart Green and the others on the new board of trustees?

To #2 Matt, Tulsa, i happen to agree with #1 Jack Evans....i believe this is an awesome good start, but there is still work to be done and people to still be removed in order for the new BOT to be efficient with no chance of looking, acting, smelling or sounding like the old BORg. That is exactly what we and I believe Mart Green is avoiding.
.
I too believe that David Ellsworth was part of the original problem that led to this whole mess and needs to get the boot. i mean think about it...this is the guy who wrote the checks for RR....that says alot without even having to say alot. new blood is what is required here so that the old can die and new life can be brought forth.
.
i also think that making RR president emeritus was a huge mistake and i don't understand why he even needs to have anything to do with the university. his gig is OREA/ORM. i also think that in order the the new president to be able to come in, set up house the way God is directing him to do so and be efficient, having RR there as a president emeritus (whatever the hell that means) looking over his shoulder is the NOT the answer. RR needs to be totally separated from ORU - have no ties with ORU in order for everyone especially the Alumni to feel like we are really moving into a NEW season and phase at ORU.
.
i thought i would leave you all with the definition of "president emeritus" and maybe you would understand why i think this is a bad idea for RR to hold this position.
.
president: The primary leader of a corporation. Not to be confused with CEO, which is a related but separate position that is sometimes held by a different person.
.
emeritus: retired, but retaining an honorific version of previous title; retired or honorably discharged from active professional duty, but retaining the title of one's office or position.
.
i just believe that in order for ORU to move on there needs to be a clean break from the previous president and administration.
.
i love the direction we're heading just as long as we continue in that direction and don't let anything stand in the way of moving forward, and i emphasize forward with the plan the Mart Green has outlined for us because i believe that Mart Green is God's man for this hour with God's plan to move ORU onward and upward into what she was called to be!

Some of you folks who are up past midnight and use Internet Explorer need to use "ieSpell," which is a Spell Checker program. Just add dot com to iespell and that will give you the website.
--
I have stopped creating much commentary in the Tulsa World articles related to Oral Roberts University. There seems to be to much hatred toward ORU, Christians, and Jesus the Christ in them. And there is a lot of hatred for those who are hoping that things will improve for ORU.
--
Most of the commenters are not even interested in the other things that are happening in Tulsa, and because they don't check out the local, state, and US/World articles, they usually miss articles directly or indirectly related to ORU. Only about 3 people even commented on the article about the Senator and the ministries under investigation recently.
--
Mart Green belongs to a classical Pentecostal church which is an Assembly of God. The Charismatic movement did not begin until the latter 1950s. The Word of Faith Movement is an off-shoot of the Charismatic movement. Another version of the Charismatics is the Latter Rain Movement, Rod Parsley seems to be Latter Rain.
--
Some of the new members of the BOT are Assemblies of God and are definitely well-educated. They know how a university should be run.

To Jon Jon Bakersfield......who do you think you are to sit in judgment of Jack on private issues of his life you know nothing about. just b/c he mentions David Ellsworth in his posts doesn't mean 'he is having some sort of love affair'. i think you are the one who needs to get your head out the gutter or out of your fantasy world. Jack mentions him because he feels adamantly that David needs to get the boot, i for one agree with him....so i guess i have a love affair too with based upon what you have said.
.
so are you jealous that jack is always the one getting the first post?? get over yourself.....and get past your issue that you seem to have with Mr. Evans. i'd advise you that when you w rite things about people to stick with facts that you know are true and not just delusions that you are having. go have yourself a coolie from 'Quik Trip' and cool your head off.

Joe-Allen, thanks for the clarification on Mart Green's church affiliation. Glad to know he has a Pentecostal background. I'm still concerned, however, that there has been virtually no mention of any spiritual direction for the university. It may not be on the front burner right now, but it does need to be addressed more directly. It would be a crime for ORU to become "just another university." Even Billy Graham years ago stressed how important it would be for ORU to stay true to its spiritual roots.

Mr. Evans, people change. It's not unusual for people to get "carried along with the crowd" and make themselves party to bad things.
Unless a person has shown a long term pattern of refusing to recognize his mistakes or turn away from them, we must give him the benefit of the doubt.
David Ellsworth has convinced men and women of good faith that he deserves a second chance. Back off! Your condemnation is misplaced.
