ORU's board is down to business

Trustees decide to pay a $7.5 million note and announce Richard Roberts and his family are moving off campus.
Oral Roberts University's new governing board tried to get a grasp on the school's finances during its first meeting, which ended Thursday.
The board of trustees decided to use $7.5 million of a $62 million donation from the Green family to pay a note coming due soon, ORU reported Thursday. ORU's debt, announced last fall as $52.5 million, will then stand at $45 million.
"This gift gets us started on the journey" but does not answer every need, board Chairman Mart Green, of the donor family, said during a press conference after the two-day board meeting.
Green also announced that former ORU President Richard Roberts and his family would be moving out of university-owned housing and that the Oral Roberts Evangelistic Association also would move off campus.
Debt
:
Green said ORU has $60 million in deferred maintenance costs, which Interim President Ralph Fagin said have accumulated over about 20 years. Every building on campus, along with the ORU-owned CityPlex Towers, has needs, Green
said.
Trustees will prioritize the needs with input from students. Improving the dorms could help recruit students, Green said; enrollment is down about 500 students from 2000, and more students mean more tuition revenue for ORU.
ORU is taking a financial loss as it separates from Oral Roberts Evangelistic Association and probably is operating in the red, Green said. Tuition makes up about 75 percent of ORU's budget, which is on par with other colleges. Now, ORU leaders are working to raise donations to make up the rest of the budget.
It remains to be seen whether people who have donated to ORU through the evangelistic association will switch to donating directly to ORU or will donate to the association, which is led by Richard Roberts, Green said. ORU will raise its own money now.
Since ORU opened its doors to students in 1965, the evangelistic association has funded ORU. "It's never operated as a typical college," Green said.
The two organizations are separating following allegations, made in a lawsuit last fall, that Roberts misspent their money. He denied wrongdoing and said he always paid for his family's personal expenses. An independent audit of ORU's finances has not been made public. Roberts resigned the ORU presidency in November.
The Green family's plan requires ORU to join the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability, and Green said he expects that to happen by the end of the year.
The Green family indicated its final approval of its deal with ORU on Wednesday, when Green handed over three checks totaling $62 million at a campus chapel service.
The plan said the family wanted to be reasonably satisfied that lawsuits against ORU could be settled fairly for the university. Green said Thursday his family was encouraged that one of three professors who sued ORU had settled, and "We just had to take a risk at some point. . . . We needed to get moving forward."
Presidential
search
:
The new board's most important job will be to choose a president, Green said. By the board's next meeting April 16 and 17, a group of trustees will have determined what characteristics ORU needs in a president. Then, the board will form a presidential search committee and hire an outside consultant.
Board
business
:
At the meeting, the board ratified revised bylaws and articles of incorporation. ORU listed four new trustees: former ORU regent Michael Hammer, former regent Scott Cordray, Mary Banks and Jay Betz. R. Lamar Vest, initially listed as a trustee, is not on the board.
ORU
changes
:
Green said the Roberts family would move out of campus housing but said he did not know where the family would move. Roberts did not return a phone call on Thursday afternoon. ORU administrators are working on a severance package for Roberts that they will present to the board for consideration, Green said.
Fagin estimated that the evangelistic association would move out of the Prayer Tower on campus by the end of the semester in early May. Employees who work for the association and ORU will end up working for one or the other, based on their jobs, abilities and preferences, Fagin said.
ORU's TV station, which broadcasts Roberts' "Hour of Healing," and the ORU-owned CityPlex Towers are off the market while trustees look into whether they are profitable and whether to keep them, Green said.

I am seriously considering contributing to ORU but I want things out in the open first. I feel it is only fair that we alumni know what was going on with the finances. I also feel that anyone that was connected with the finances should be immediately fired.
-------------
Good agenda before giving:
1) Get that audit report out in the open,
A cover up of something so relevant is no way to start the "new" ORU.
2) Those key persons involved in past wrongs should be gone.
They have no place in the "new" ORU.

Amen to #17, Sister Ann. There is not one of us who has read all the unkind things and vile spewed everwhere who are not in need of his MERCY AND GRACE... May Mart Green be given the wisdom of God to put the University back on a sound financial footing and a Spiritural underpinning like it has never had. Politics need to be removed..........And no severence for theives, this reeks of politics already..

I'd have to disagree with Susie, #6. It's a rare person who is truly "called" to live as George Muller did. If God wants to provide for the Roberts family that way, then of course they should follow that. But just because that was the noble lifestyle of one man, doesn't mean we can randomly point to anyone who seems financially irresponsible and tell them to do the same. As a missionary for many years, I lived on donations, and let me tell you.... it's dangerous to take Muller's chosen lifestyle and just assume it's the way you're meant to go.

I do not know the truth in all of this.I do know that there is a lot of shaking going on,
this is a huge change for ORU...55.5 millon in debt & another 60 million in deferred mantenance wow that is staggering .
new beginnings for all involved...the students the faculty the staff... & the Roberts family.the disgrace & leaving I pray helps them to come to a place of forgiveness repentance & ultimate healing in all their lives ,I would not want all my own sins flaunted before the world to see .
But the God of grace is able to take a situation ,any circumstance & bring His life to it.a university a disgraced president & little old "me". with His truth always comes His grace.I speak that for all involved.those who write those who hate those are angry & those who have been taken advantage of & all those who stand in the need of His mercy & grace this day. thats all of us........................

#9: WHAT?????? That makes no sense. Are you saying to donate to ORU without any questions being answered about where the previous donations went??? Is that your "prove it". Doing that is not proving anything except that no lessons were learned from the donors who blindly gave to LR and RR........

I would not be willing to give a penny to either ORU or OREA until the audit was made public. Where did all the money come from???? DONATIONS. Donations from the public. This should be public information. If he has done no wrong - what is there to hide? And if he has done wrong, I wouldn't want to have my donation funding his severance package.

TO RICHARD . . . if you are reading these blogs . . . I suggest you read as much as you can about GEORGE MULLER. This man lived by prayer and faith alone - trusting in God alone. He told NO ONE BUT GOD about his needs - and God was absolutely faithful to meet those needs. You need not broadcast to the world on your TV show - your financial needs. TRUST IN GOD ALONE. Preach the WORD! HONOR CHRIST! Lift Him up on every program and do not mention a thing about money - trust in the Lord - and you will see the mighty hand of God move!

I can't believe Richard Roberts is going to lead the evangelistic association. Can't people understand that he and Lindsay will continue to spend the contributions?

Mark: It was the religious leaders that Jesus dealt with and with much anger. Identifying leaders that should not be followed. Some people are more gullible and you would be quite surprised at the people that have opened their eyes to the Roberts as a result of the TW articles and the comments.

To: dt: There are business practice norms and it is a business norm to give a severance package to the executive level employees leaving regardless of their performance. They are doing this to stay within the business norms to prevent RR from hitting them with a lawsuit. It is done in the business world for both nfp and fp.

You use all the wisdom and common sense God has given you. Of course you look for a job. Your pay represents the wages you have earned with your hard work. I am talking about broadcasting your needs to people you know can meet them instead of trusting God alone to meet your needs.

So....you shouldn't look for a job, because that would be "soliciting" (as you know you'll be paid); everyone should just sit at home & pray someone will know they're hungry?

DEAR #20 - Thank you for your comments. I do disagree wholeheartedly with you though. I believe every single Christian is called to live as George Muller did. To believe God alone for all your needs is totally scriptural. It is so fantastic when you see your needs met - when you know beyond a doubt that He was the only one privy to that need. He is well able to provide for His children, as I am sure you know by experience.

REGARDING 25. 2/1/2008 10:27:22 AM, M.S.,
Everyone is saying they want the audit to come out rather than be swept under the rug. Don't you think that's what the Brookers are holding out for? Perhaps that's why Green went ahead with the funds even though the Brookers' lawsuit is not settled. He wants everything to come out as well.
Secondly, attorneys make the decision about what a case is worth. The plaintiffs do not have a say in what a lawsuit is worth. And don't you think that Attorney Gary Richardson and his troops deserve to be well paid, just like the Brookers. Without all of them the Roberts would still be in charge.
For those who want to apply scripture to this situation, there are two biblical principles here: One, nature reproduces after its own kind. What has come out of this lawsuit is integrity, structure, and order. The second principle is that Christians are only permitted to judge the fruit of other Christians — not their motives or methods. Can anyone dispute that the fruit of the lawsuit has been positive and has brought about change that ultimately saved the university from further decline, debt, and derision?

"No one from the east or the west or from the desert can exalt a man. But it is God who judges: He brings one down, He exalts another." Psalm 75:6 - All this is the Lord's doing. Also - "A crown is not secure for all generations" (from Proverbs 27:24) - the Roberts heirarchy is not eternal. It might have lasted longer - or even ended well, if they had lived selflessly.

Richard and Lindsey worked very hard over the years planting the seeds of discontent among the faculty, staff, and students. Thousands of faculty, staff, and students have heard Richard say in Chapel that “ if ORU is ever destroyed, it will be from the inside out – just as an apple rotes from the inside out”. He often told friends he feared being sued. How prophetic his words would turn out.
Richard, Lindsey and their family lived like royalty while the faculty, staff, and students could no longer tolerate their behavior.
As Marie Antoinette reportedly said “Let them eat cake”. Remember what happened to her head and her royal family ???
