ORU board reborn in new bylaws

The power of "spiritual regents" and ultimate leadership by the founder and his family are gone in Oral Roberts University's revised articles of incorporation and bylaws.
The new documents usher in shared governance -- with defined roles for the board, the president and the faculty -- required by the Green family, which has donated $70 million to ORU.
The revised bylaws give ORU's new governing board the ultimate authority over the college and state that the president serves at the pleasure of the board.
Previously, the president essentially had power over the board, board of trustees Chairman Mart Green said last week.
When the university first accepted students in 1965, founder Oral Roberts served as the president, and his son Richard Roberts succeeded him in 1993. Richard Roberts resigned in November, following a lawsuit, a storm of publicity and allegations he mismanaged the university and misused its money. He denied wrongdoing.
Both men, along with their wives, were ORU's spiritual regents, who had ultimate authority within ORU's old board of regents, according to the old bylaws. They were considered ORU's "spiritual prophets, seers, pastors, leaders and ministers." Teachings of the chairman
and vice chairman of the spiritual regents "represent(ed) the teachings" of Jesus as applied to modern times "and must be followed" by leaders and staff. ORU "is essentially and fundamentally a religious organization," the old bylaws stated.
The Green family described ORU's old articles of incorporation and bylaws as inadequate and obsolete in its plan for the university, which the old board of regents accepted this month.
The new articles of incorporation provide a way to change the name and purpose of the university: by a unanimous vote of the full board three years in a row at its annual meeting. ORU's stated purpose, the same as it was described in the 1991 version of ORU's articles of incorporation, includes education of the "whole person," including mind, spirit and body.
The revised bylaws define the responsibilities of four groups:
Board:
Trustees will serve three-year terms, with about a third of the trustees' terms expiring each year. The board will make sure ORU sticks to its mission; elect a president by two-thirds of the trustees at the meeting; approve of ORU's budget, tuition, investments, any loans, construction, renovations and the purchase, sale and management of land, buildings and major equipment; and participate in fundraising.
The board will decide the president's compensation and length and conditions of employment. These duties are similar to those of other university boards in Oklahoma.
President:
The president will be the university's CEO, a nonvoting board member and the board's chief adviser, responsible for "all university educational and managerial affairs." The president will be in charge of leading the university, hiring administrators in consultation with the board and implementing board policies, and will be "responsible for the effective direction and organization of the faculty" and other ORU employees.
Faculty:
The faculty will include the president and will be responsible for directing the educational program, including "admission requirements, curricula, instruction, schedules and degree requirements."
Students:
Students who "desire to undertake serious academic study" and "show promise" of academic success may enroll at ORU.
The bylaws also state that the chair, vice chair, secretary and treasurer of the board, and one or more vice presidents will be elected annually by the board.
The revised bylaws call for a smaller board -- now up to 22 members instead of 44 -- and require participation and attendance at meetings. Under the old articles of incorporation, a third of business regents constituted a quorum, whereas a majority of trustees now makes up a quorum.
Regents could be removed from the board only for "moral turpitude, fraud, apostasy or the like," but trustees can be removed with or without cause by a two-thirds vote of the whole board.
A conflict of interest policy adopted Thursday calls for "arm's length bargaining" and "reasonable investment or payments for goods and services."
The board of trustees created the nonvoting board of reference to replace the old board of regents. The board of reference exists "to provide for effective communication and informative exchange and service among the public, this university's stakeholders and the university," according to ORU's revised bylaws.
The board of reference has 44 members, including about a half-dozen former regents. ORU had about 40 business and associate regents and regents emeriti this school year. Longtime regents Chairwoman Marilyn Hickey made the switch, as did Billy Joe Daugherty, pastor of Victory Christian Center in Tulsa. The board also includes former U.S. Rep. J.C. Watts and David Green, founder of the Hobby Lobby chain and a member of ORU's donor family.

Of all the stories written about this mess, the following paragraph may be the most disturbing. It's no wonder they were ever questioned by anyone. They basically wrote themselves into the bylaws as the 'oracles of God.' Thank God when OR passes they will never be involved w/running the university ever again.
" Both men, along with their wives, were ORU's spiritual regents, who had ultimate authority within ORU's old board of regents, according to the old bylaws. The list of those on the board of reference is interesting. It ranges from the head of the Assemblies of God to a television news anchor. Interestingly, I did not see the names George Pearsons or Kenneth Copeland.
The list of all trustees, their committees, and the board of reference is on this site in the ORU lawsuit section.

I've been saying this whole time that ORU is not an educational institution, but an indoctrination center for a cult mentality.
Let's see how many of the hayseeds write in to complain that their beloved "special" status of ORU is now gone.
The real test is what is required of the so-called "new" BOT and a new president.
I say, nothing, as an entire laundry list of random Bible verses is listed as correct/required "belief" to be on the BOT. It's in the latest Green Proposal, for anyone who cares to take the time to actually sit down and read it, which most people are apparently too lazy to do.
NONE of those things has *anything* whatsoever to do with academics or learning. That's because ORU was never meant to be a learning institution.
From the dictates of one family to another. The sick saga of ORU's authoritarianism continues.

GREAT STEPS ...WITH MORE TO COME
The new articles of incorporation provide a way to change the name...
------------
4 things will put the old, corrupt ORU behind and signal a new era:
1) The new BOT , along with the new Article and By-Laws, as reported above. DONE!
2) Replacing key RR cronies and enablers in the admin. These are the people who broke the piggy bank for Richard and his wild-spending family. They are tainted, some could be legally culpable, and need to be changed. TO BE DONE.
3.) As soon as the legal cases are settled, make known the contents of the audit-report on the past. Openness and transparency means an end to the cover-up culture at ORU.
TO BE DONE.
4) Change the name at the earliest possible moment. This will finally draw the line between the past and future, and enhance the degrees earned by students. TO BE DONE
But SO MUCH has already been accomplished.
The entrenched, corrupt regime is gone.
The climate of fear is gone.
The school is no longer at the brink of closure due to financial mismanagement of the Roberts family and cronies.
NEW leadership is in charge.
Wonderful!
Now, finish the job and move on to a great new future and clean identity.

I agree with you about ORU being essentially an "indoctrination" center in the past.
Witness how the students cried and wept when Richard said he was resigning. That is scary!
I also believe it has been a center for extreme right-wing indoctrination and far more political involvement in ectreme right-wing causes than has been uncovered to date.
But maybe --- just maybe-- there's a chance they can become an
educational institution, instead of an indoctrination assembly-line.
Let's hope for the best--- with eyes wide-open.
, and a factory turning out right-wing fanatics -- weirdos, actually,

Yes, and the bit of information I found is disturbing. His 'group,' Teen Mania Ministries is apparently a member of the Arlington Group, which appears to be a Christian conservative right wing political lobby organization. Their website (Arlington Group) is scary - links to the Minuteman site, graphic anti-abortion pics, etc. The Teen Mania site also states "....with God on our side....," - IMO, any group that makes that claim is using it to validate their own agenda. Again, IMO, Christians should examine themselves to make sure they are on God's side, not the other way around.

TELEVANGLIST TO NEANDERTHALS?
As I mentioneD above theere is already a right-wing political bias to the school, and if what you say is true, it could move from
a telecvanelist cult cultue toa right-wing political direction.
That may seem far-fetched, but the Arlington Group is a scary bunch of Neanderthals, IMO.
Green will have to make sure a balance is maintained --- neither right or left politically.
I'd say give him time to strike that balance, but keep eyes open.

I have no personal knowledge, what I wrote was from a cursory web search done a week or so ago. I think it was from Wikipedia that the connection between Teen Mania and the Arlington Group was taken. Yes, balance is crucial. I hope there are no hidden political agendas on the new board.

Not with the likes of JC Watts, a Black man so extremist far right and self-hating he involved himself with the pro-slavery, pro-segregation SBC.
This new board is just as bad or even worse than the first. As for hidden political agendas, let's just say there's apparently no need for them to hide.
These Freikorps members show themselves for what they are, even in public, even without being embarrassed.

From the Green final Proposal:
To qualify as members of the Board of Trustees, individuals
must:
i. acknowledge these core beliefs:
(1) The Bible is the expressed Word of God and is
our final authority in all matters of faith and
practice. (II Timothy 3.16; Psalm 119.89-91; II
Peter 1.20-21).
(2) God, all-loving Creator of the Heavens and the
earth, eternally exists in three persons: Father,
Son and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1.1,26; John 1.1-
2; 4.24; Romans 1.19-20; Ephesians 4.5-6).
(3) Jesus is the eternal and second person of the
Trinity. Though fully Divine, He became fully
human. He was born of the virgin Mary and
lived a sinless life. He was crucified for crimes
He didn’t commit, and through His resurrection,
freed all people from the power of sin and
death. He will return again, ushering in the
eternal Kingdom of God. All who respond to
the work and teachings of Jesus by a personal
belief that issues forth in personal obedience to
Jesus and His teachings will live forever with
Him. (Matthew 1.18-25; John 1.1; 12.44-45;
Romans 9.5; Hebrews 4.15; Ephesians 5.2; I
Thessalonians 4.16-17).
(4) Salvation, a free gift from God, is God’s desire
for all humanity to be in right relationship with
Him. In turning from a self-centered life and
turning to God and accepting the work Christ
accomplished in His death and resurrection,
one receives new and eternal life. (John 3.16-
17; 14.6; Ephesians 2.8-10; I Timothy 2.4; I
John 2.2).

ii. acknowledge the University’s spiritual commitments as
set forth in the Faculty and Administration Handbook:
(1) Confesses to be a child of God, redeemed by
the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ
who has sent the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, to
abide within.
(2) Is open to receiving the Baptism of the Holy
Spirit with the releasing of the prayer language of
the indwelling Holy Spirit, as St. Paul did and
taught in 1 Corinthians 14:14-15, when he said,
“. . . I will pray with the Spirit, and I will pray with
the understanding also,” and is willing to assist
others in this experience.
(3) Is manifesting the fruit of the Holy Spirit
(Galatians 5:22-23, 25) and is desiring the gifts
of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:1-14) as an
expression of love for all people in service
through a community of faith and lay witness
ministry in the world.
iii. demonstrate a commitment to and passion for the
Mission of the University and the full Gospel of the Word
of God; and
iv. possess sufficient knowledge, experience, and skills to
help discharge the business, professional, and spiritual
duties of the Board.
_________________________
So the "spiritual regents" are gone, but the BOT now has "spiritual duties". What are "spiritual duties" supposed to be?
Could someone also explain: what does being a literalist trinitarian jibbajabba have ANYTHING to do with education of students?
Why this particular litmus test for the BOT, with no mention of or concern for any academic qualifications?

No, it's not far-fetched at all. Televangelism and far right extremist politics have always gone hand in hand. Only instead of Father Coughlin blaming Jewish people for everyone's misery, today they want "prosperity gospel" substituted for economic policy, "pray about it" in place of health care, "traditional family values" in place of a safety net.
All are rooted in a callous blaming of the victim and in "states rights"/neo-segregationist confederate flagwaving. This it the heart of "compassionate conservatism", an oxymoron if I've ever heard one.

I agree tele-evanglism and right-wing extremism go together. Where you find on you usually find the other.
Maybe it's the common evangelnazi culture. In the Cold War days they had bumper stickers that said, Kill a commie for Christ."
These are scary people. The new ORU should not become captive to right or left.
