Tulsa teen Alaina Whitaker was cut from “American Idol” Thursday night in a vote that caught many fans by surprise.

Whitaker, 17, had received mixed reviews Wednesday night for her performance of “Hopelessly Devoted to You,” but even the judges thought she was safe for another week, telling her she was a “dark horse” in the competition.

During the elimination, Whitaker was called by host Ryan Seacrest to the center of the stage with singer Kady Malloy, 18, of Houston, whose performance of Heart’s “Magic Man” was heavily criticized by judges.

Even Malloy appeared to think she was heading home Thursday night, nodding her head when Seacrest recapped her ill-received performance.

But Whitaker received fewer votes, according to Seacrest, and was visibly distraught at the news that this would be her last “American Idol” performance.

She cried and said she wasn’t sure she could perform the song again because she was so upset. (She eventually did sing.)

Judge Paula Abdul told her not to let the vote discourage her singing career.

“You are such a gifted, bright young talent,” Abdul said. “Alaina, truth be told, this is the start of an amazing career for you.”

Whitaker, the youngest competitor in the top 20, had fared better Wednesday night in the judges’ view than several others, who were criticized for singing off-key, having

pitch problems, making bad song choices and risking modern interpretations of some ’70s classics.

But Whitaker was criticized for a performance the judges thought was too old-fashioned and “pageanty.”

After the elimination show Thursday night, Whitaker’s grandparents, Charles and Norma Reneau of Tulsa, said their family and friends were “crying their eyes out,” trying to get over their shock.

“I certainly saw shock on a bunch of people’s faces,” Charles Reneau said. “But all good things come to an end sometime, and I told her that she can only control what she does; she can’t control what other people do.”

He said his granddaughter told him: “I was singing before ‘American Idol’; I’ll be singing after American Idol.’ ”

Whitaker, a junior at Tulsa’s Metro Christian Academy, won a local singing competition last year that paid for her trip to audition for “American Idol” in Dallas.

Three other singers were also eliminated from “American Idol” Thursday night: Alexandrea Lushington, 17, of Douglasville, Ga.; Robbie Carrico, 26, of Melbourne, Fla; and Jason Yeager, 28, of Grand Prairie, Texas.

Tulsa resident David Cook, 25, received enough votes for his Tuesday performance of Free’s “All Right Now” to stay on the show.

her elimination was completely undeserved. the two girls who i fully expected, were going back home were amanda and kady. if they are good singers i have yet to see. alaina's vioce is very strong and she sings with such an effortless ease. a pretty girl too. i m most sorry that she had to leave.

I was shocked too. I really thought that Amanda and Kady would be gone. I guess, I should have called in and voted for Alaina. Alaina is awesome and I'm very proud of her.

David Cook was first noted with Tulsa World and American Idol as being from Tulsa, then Americal Idol changed his hometown to Blue Springs, Missouri on their website.....Does he really live in Tulsa?

Alaina seems like a sweet girl, very pretty and very talented. I think her downfall may have been the film clip of her "something probably no one knows about me is that I don't like my food to touch each other on my plate". Surely she could have come up with something other than that. It made her seem very immature and air-headed. Also, the blue dress she wore on Wednesday was rather pagentry (as Simon said). It was a cute dress, just not the right thing to wear. A pair of jeans, high heels or boots, a cute top, vest and some jewelry would have been somewhat more youthful (though not too young), or the outfit Kady wore Wednesday night would have looked great on Alaina. Alaina has more talent than a lot of the other guys and girls that got to stay, she just didn't seem to get enough exposure. Since she is so young, she ought to try out again next year or the year after if American Idol is still around. One other thought might be for her to have her front teeth repaired where she doesn't have the gap between her two front teeth. From reading other message boards, it looks like most everyone was surprised that Alaina was voted off so early. I was glad that she stayed up there and sing, no matter how difficult it was. It showed some maturity and grace.

I think Kady and Alexandrea or Amanada should have went home. At least Alexandrea did go. Kady sings ok, is pretty and seems to know it, she just has an attitude problem. Amanda is too rough around the edges to make it and that terrible hair, oh brother; Syeshia can't sing. Kristi Lee is pretty and sings pretty good but is too vanilla boring. Asiah'h is pretty good, I just hope she does away with the wig or what the straight hair was that she was wearing on Wednesday, she kept fawning it while singing and it was annoying. Right now I would say the top females are in order: Karly, Brooke and Rameiule.

As for the guys, I have to say Michael Johns is the "it" guy. He has it all, sings great, handsome, classy, cool. I'm more than ready for Danny to leave, but I'm afraid he is going to be another Sanajaya of last year. The teeny boppers will keep voting for him. David Archuleta has a pretty good voice, but he looks like he's 12 or 13. Jason Yeager was a cutie but seemed too old acting/dressing for his age and he also seemed to not be able to connect with the right songs. Luke is good looking and sings good but might be like Kristy Lee, just too vanilla. Chikezie is good as long as he doesn't wear the orange suit again, yuck. Jason Castro is cute and has a good, unusual voice, he just needs to get rid of the dreaded dreadlocks, those are so out of style, the only person really wearing that style anymore is Whoopi Goldberg. David Cook is cool, great voice, he needs to lighten up some and not make any more sassy remarks back to Simon. Even though David was right that the voters are the ones that makes the decisions now, but Simon, Paula & Randy were the ones that allowed David to go to Hollywood. Robbie just didn't fit in. The Garrett kid that was voted off last week sounded like a female singing, so it was good that he was voted off. As for the guys: Michael Johns, David Cook. In my opinion, probably the worst of the original 24 was Amy Davis, she could not sing at all.

I've been saying this for several years but I think the age bracket for American Idol should be 19 to 32. The 16 and 17 year old are just too immature to compete also they are missing school while competing. In most cases there is a big difference in the teens and 20 somethings, they possess more maturity and grace.

I WAS DEEPLY SURPRISED THAT ALAINA WAS ELIMINATED. I
THOUGHT SHE HAD AN AMAZING VOICE. I DONT THINK SHE
DESERVED TO BE CUT,EVEN THOUGH AMERICA VOTED. SHE
REMINDS ME A LITTLE LIKE CARRIED UNDERWOOD, AND I
THINK SHE HAS GREAT POTENIAL.

I definately think what caused Alaina to lose votes was the clip of her talking about her hating her foods to touch each other. It did make her seem very ditzy. They should have just "Alaina, come on girl, you can think of something better than that to say about yourself!" and shouldn't have even aired that.

I don't think comments had anything to do with whether she's there or not. Look at the last couple of years, it's all in the fan voting. It shows you she just didn't have enough "friend". One lady from Michigan hired people to vote for her a year or two ago and as I recall she was one of the last three before losing out and she was terrible in all ways. Shows people it's really a lousy tv show not worth watching.

It's all because of votefortheworst dot com.

They sabotaged idol again...the same way daughtrey was eliminated, they also caused sanjaya and kevin covais to stay so long. They urged people this time to vote for "cruella deville" instead. What is unforgivable is that their pranks cost other people their dreams. They recruit fanatics with autodialers to "vote for the worst."

Idol could put an end to this by having a 5-10 call per caller's phone number limit, like dancing with the stars does.

Great news everyone

A federal appeals court refused Thursday to bar prosecutors from enforcing Arizona's new employer-sanctions law while they hear arguments on its legality.
The judges of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco rejected arguments by lawyers for business groups and their allies that they should not let prosecutors investigate, and potentially bring charges against, companies accused of knowingly hiring undocumented workers.
In an unsigned order, the judges said they considered challengers' arguments they would suffer irreparable harm, and the likelihood the foes ultimately will succeed in convincing the court to overturn U.S. District Judge Neil Wake's ruling earlier this month that the law is constitutional.
"We conclude the appellants have not shown that the case warrants a grant of temporary relief during the pendency of these expedited appeals," the order states.
But the judges did agree to rush the case, at least by appellate standards, with all the legal arguments by both sides filed by the middle of May.
Farrell Quinlan, a spokesman for some of the business groups contesting the legality of the statute, said his clients are disappointed. But Quinlan said the accelerated hearing schedule means there actually could be a final ruling as early as the end of the summer.
In the interim, Arizona employers must check the legal status of all new workers through the federal government's E-Verify system. Business groups said the financial cost of compliance, ranging from buying computer equipment to having someone do the checks, is an unfair burden.
Wake rejected that argument.
The bigger issue for companies is the provision of the law, which took effect Jan. 1, that allows a state judge to suspend any and all business licenses and permits of any firm found guilty of knowingly hiring someone here illegally. A second conviction within three years puts the company out of business.
David Selden, one of the lead attorneys in the case, has argued the law is an impermissible intrusion by the state into the exclusive power of the federal government to regulate immigration.
Wake acknowledged that federal law bars states from imposing civil fines and criminal penalties against companies because they hire undocumented workers. But he pointed out that federal law specifically says states can use their licensing and similar laws to punish errant companies.
And Wake said the fact that suspending or revoking a company's ability to stay in business could be more serious than a fine is legally irrelevant.
Selden said rejection of the injunction request does not mean the court is unlikely to accept his arguments that the law is invalid.
"To get an emergency injunction you've got to tip the scales very heavily at the outset in your favor," he said.
"Obviously we would have preferred to win this motion. But we're still optimistic that when the litigation is over this will all be declared unconstitutional."
Joining in the challenge have been groups including the American Civil Liberties Union and Chicanos Por La Causa, which have argued that businesses would be less inclined to hire Hispanics out of fear one might prove to be undocumented

#23, I do have compassion. I have it for soldiers in war; the police and firemen who answered the 9/11 crisis; small children who are beaten to death or starved; people who are trying to make a living by working; cruelty to animals, and other such examples.

I will not have compassion for a 17 year old who obviously couldn't sing well enough to stay on a stupid contest show!
