Under fire for calling homosexuality a greater threat than terrorism, the lawmaker receives a standing ovation.
OKLAHOMA CITY -- A state lawmaker who declared that homosexuality is a greater threat to the United States than terrorism said Monday that she received a standing ovation from
her fellow Republican legislators Monday.
Rep. Sally Kern, R-Oklahoma City, said she has been barraged with more than 5,000 e-mails since she made national headlines over the weekend. Most of the communications were critical, and several contained language that Kern said she has never heard before.
The lawmaker related some of the e-mails to Republican caucus members in a closed meeting Monday. She later said the group gave her a standing ovation.
Rep. Al McAffrey, the only openly gay member of the state Legisla ture, said he resents Kern's assertion that homosexuality is worse than terrorism.
"Gays are law-abiding; they pay taxes. Some have children," he said, noting that he is a father and grandfather.
Kern said she has made these comments about four times to various Republican groups and that apparently someone secretly recorded her comments at a meeting in January.
An audio presentation of her comments first appeared on a Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund Web site; then on YouTube. The YouTube file had received nearly 400,000 hits by Monday evening.
Kern said many of those who sent her electronic messages would deny her right to free speech.
"To put this simply: As a Christian I believe homosexuality is not moral," she said. "Obviously, you have the right as an American to choose that lifestyle, but I also have the right to express my views, and my fellow Oklahomans have the right to debate these issues."
A former teacher, Kern asserted that the government wants to get young children into school at a very early age so it can indoctrinate them.
Kern said that at age 2, 3, 4 or 5, "little girls want to play with little girls, little boys with boys, because their hormones haven't kicked in just yet."
But Kern said teaching about homosexuality at this stage "is a very deceptive and deceitful way to influence children" that homosexuality is acceptable behavior.
Laura Belmonte, president of the Tulsa group Oklahomans for Equality, said Kern "is not saying anything markedly different than she has over the last several years. The only difference is that she is getting national exposure."
"I find it particularly interesting that she (Kern) is invoking freedom of speech for these remarks," Belmonte said, noting that Kern sponsored a bill a few years ago to restrict access to library books that might contain gay or les bian themes or information.
Justice Waidner, executive director of Oklahomans for Equality, said in a press release that "OkEq firmly supports Rep. Kern's constitutional right to express her views, but vociferously objects to the actions she takes to prevent LGBT Oklahomans from attaining justice and equality."
"When elected officials use their power to defame entire categories of people, they abuse the freedom of speech embedded in the First Amendment and violate their responsibility to ensure the safety and well-being of their constituents," she said.
The group called upon the rest of the Legislature to condemn Kern's comments and to pass a state hate crimes law that includes sexual orientation and gender identity.

Hetrosexual Sin
, (3/11/2008 2:12:24 AM)
Sin is greater that another sin.
To all the sinners: to be more inclusive, kerns should have mentioned all sexual sin. Hetrosexual sin (just by the numbers) is exceedingly more destructive to society as a whole than Homosexual sin.
Hetrosexual sin such as, pre marital sex, abortion (murder), adultery, divorce, and sexual diseases.
And don't forget the numerous number of "hetrosexual" men engaging
in gay sex.

As a representitive of VOTERS, she should have kept her views to herself.
Her not doing so, and saying it is her Christian heritage. Doesn't say much for Chrisitians!
Wouuld she STONE someone for working on Sunday? That is in the Bible as well as killin your children for disrespecting a parent.

Great, the last thing Oklahomans need pushed to the front and center of national media attention are more ignorant fundies like Sally Kern thinking that she seems to speak for all the people that live here. She's giving her gender, religion and state a bad name for making asinine comments like these, assuring that Oklahoma will continued to be looked down upon by the rest of an intelligent society for years to come.
"There are no gays in OK," she says? Well guess what, Ms. Kern. I'm gay and proud and I don't need people like you claiming to speak on my behalf on any matters related to the state. How about backing up some of the claims in your hate-filled, vitriolic language with some facts other than a few words in your little leather-bound bible. Better yet, do the world a favor and get out of politics and crawl back into the pulpit where it seems like you're more comfortable.

Even though we are a silent majority [in the closet so to speak]
She speaks for the majority of Ameicans and especially Oklahoma. Very few people from Okla. hate gays. Most Okies find you gays quite entertaining [scince they outlawed freak shows at the carnival]It is just your agenda of pushing your believes on the majority is what we have a problem with.
But remember what Machiavelli taught. When negotiations break down. The stronger force always win. [WE AE THE STRONGER FORCE AND ALWAYS WILL BE]

Conservatives are conservatives no matter what it the brand they wearing. Evangical Christians are a bigger much bigger threat to this country than homosexuals.
The government wants kids in school to indoctrinate them? Homosexuals have an agenda? Right...that agenda would be to be treated equally. Grow up, Oklahoma.

I support her and her freedom of speech. why is it that leberals and gays can bash whomever they want and it is ok but when a conservative uses their freedom of speech it is not ok. I agree with her view on this immoral and hypocritical lifestyle. Hypocritical because two men say they only like men yet one of them tries to look, talk, and act like a man. then you have two women that say they only like women but one of them cuts their hair like a man, dresses like a man, and talks like a man. this lifestyle is grossly immoral.

Dear Sally Kern
, (3/11/2008 8:13:17 AM)
Dear Sally Kern:
Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from your speech, and try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination ... End of debate.
I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some other elements of God's Laws and how to follow them.
1. Leviticus 25:44 states that I may possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?
2. I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?
3. I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness - Lev.15: 19-24. The problem is how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.
4. When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord - Lev.1:9. The problem is, my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?
5. I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2. clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself, or should I ask the police to do it?
6. A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination - Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this? Are there 'degrees' of abomination?
7. Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle-room here?
8. Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27. How should they die?
9. I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?
10. My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev.19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? Lev.24:10-16. Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair, like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)
I know you have studied these things extensively and thus enjoy considerable expertise in such matters, so I am confident you can help. Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging.
Your adoring fan

Omfg. Can someone, anyone give me a single solitary example of an Oklahoma teacher teaching about homosexuality to children at ages 2, 3, 4 or 5? This lady, and evidently many of the posters on this comment board, is either off her rocker or a lying fear monger.
Yes, Mrs. Kern, you have the right to believe what you want. Yes, Mrs. Kern, you have the right to say what you want. Yes, Mrs. Kern, many so-called "people" in the state probably support you. But when you say something stupid, guess what, other people who may not have the same inferiority complex as you do have the same right of free speech as you do. For people to say "Gee, this lady is a complete tool. In fact, I think I'll write/call this ELECTED REPRESENTATIVE and tell her how big of a tool she actually is" or "My gosh, how could someone claiming to be so smart say something so downright dumb," is also free speech Mrs. Kern. Just because you do have freedom of speech doesn't mean saying something moronic doesn't come with repercussions.
For the other posters: ET, your not serious, right? Please say you aren't that dumb. Anti-Pelosi: so your saying conservatives follow the teachings of Machiavelli rather than Jesus. Thank you for finally admitting that, sir. And remember who the strongest force was during the Civil Rights Movement, good sir -- people exactly like you, and you lost.

If Ms Kerns has substituted the word GAYS, and used JEWS,BLACKS,SPANISH...she'd be in a real heep! She is a Public servant to ALL the people..not just the Religious white ones...But Gays/lesbians are the last bastion in America of tolerated Bigotry. As far as Im concerned - the next LGBT person bashed or murdered is on the shoulders of Ms Kern. How come no-one asks this "supposed" christian woman..about her own GAY son? Hate speech, comparing your pervert lives to the civil rights struggle of blacks in the 60's, tearing religion down because believing in god would invalidate your lifestyle...

Sally Kern apparently has always felt that way; not everyone knew about it but we do now. I hope the constituents in her district do the right thing and not re-elect her. Elected politicans have freedom of speech but they should use it wisely. Her comments on gays are much worse but no different than Don Imus, and he lost his job. If she were any other public figure, she would likely lose her job. As a politician, all we can do is villify her and shun her. Sally Kern is the new Anita Bryant of our times.

As a Christian, I would hope she would refrain from throwing that first stone. Actually, I would prefer she keep her religous views to herself. I am glad though she is a politician and not a teacher. I would be horrified if she were teaching my children this kind of hate. And no matter how you cut, the words she used are hateful, and there's nothing in Jesus' teachings that could ever be construed as hateful.

Don't let them get you down. You will be suprise of how many of us support what you say. I don't want someone telling my kids its normal. It goes against NATURE since when can a man get another man pregnant. That there should tell you it is WRONG. But GOD loves us so much that he does not force us to worship or follow him. He gives us free will and some of us take it and run with it regardless of what he feels or thinks.
Most don't even believe in GOD they think they are their own god. One day we will find out and I hope we can deal with our decisions. I'm a christian and far from perfect, but that is what makes it great. I do try to obey and follow and when I trip and fall he is there to give me a hand and pick me up.
Sally was brave to speak up and that is what we need someone not afraid to say how it is. If your hurt deal with it the way the rest of us deal with it. If her son is gay she is dealing with it and that is just how life is. Maybe some guy convinced him that he was. That is one thing I don't like about some gay people. Don't be trying to recruit people, I thought they were born like that. So why do they push their gay agenda?
