Troubled economy leads to increase in state food stamp distribution
By Associated Press

Last Modified: 3/26/2008 9:21 AM
OKLAHOMA CITY -- After 18 months of steady declines, the number of Oklahomans receiving food stamps increased in February compared with the same month a year earlier.
Food stamps were distributed to 417,624 Oklahomans in February 2008, compared with 416,622 in February 2007.
More than one out of every three Oklahoma children received food stamps at least one month during the past year, said Howard Hendrick, director of the state Department of Human Services.
The February increase is a bad sign, since food stamps are considered a leading economic indicator, Hendrick said.
Food prices have soared in the wake of the country's mortgage collapse, high energy prices and the devaluation of the American dollar, Hendrick told DHS Commission members Tuesday.
Low income families now must pay $4 for a gallon for milk and $2 or $3 for a loaf of bread.
Hendrick also said for the first time in his memory, DHS expects to receive less money from both the state and federal government in the upcoming fiscal year, meaning the state will have less money to meet greater needs.
How drastic DHS budget cuts will be is yet to be determined, since the Oklahoma Legislature has not yet determined how it will allocate tax revenues to various state agencies. DHS is projecting a $24.1 million loss of federal funds.
Even if the Legislature matches last year's $557.1 million DHS appropriation, the agency still would need to cut programs by about
5.2 percent, Hendrick said.
"It's going to be a challenging year," he said.

I know the answer: more tax cuts! This is all the fault of all the illegals we just kicked out of our state. I don't know how but it must be. Somehow they are still the reason why our state government spends so much money. Man they are such a burden.

No, HB1804 is NOT bad for the state. Legals that are on the food stamp program should pick up the jobs that the illegals were doing, thus enable the US citizen workers to be removed from the food stamp program.

Of course the idiots have to come on here talking smack about HB1804 supporters. Because 1804 caused the giant nationwide recession, right hombres??
I bet a grand that there are more anti-HB1804 people on food stamps than there are HB1804 supporters on it!

To the growing # of minorities. I imagine (combined together) they are a majority by now. The corporate bought politicians can now ignore us & go for their votes. The corps win every time. They are going to make us all poor , while they make record Billions of profits.

Dave,
What you don't get is that we aren't electing any leaders that would actually make these reforms. The two candidates that got the majority of primary votes from Oklahoma were the two with the largest spending plans. If you have large spending you have to more taxes. Either way you have to find a balance without crippling competition and the ability to rise to higher classes. I am personally for cutting spending in nearly every government category because I feel it promotes a more naturally occurring healthy economy without requisites of large government interference. My sarcasm was directed at those that don't understand how little the illegal immigrants take from state paid benefits. The overwhelming majority of overspending has absolutely nothing to do with undocumented immigrants. It has to do with bad government policy. You can't have large spending and low taxes. That creates debt, weakens the dollar and lowers the potential for the government to create jobs in times of need. Also, most economists think that without the large illegal immigrant population that we have come to rely on business profits won't fall but rather skilled and educated labor wages will fall to meet the demand of rising unskilled labor costs. So, this whole idea that those who hire illegals will now suffer is pretty off base.

I disagree......the way to raise revenue the fastest and long-term is by reducing the tax burden, allowing people to spend more, invest more and creating more revenue. Icreasing taxes stunts business growth, more hiring, and more tax revenue. Yes, spending is out of control, but it ain't going to improve. there are too many people now dependent on government and that's who politicians pander too. Best of luck.

GDP does not equal government money. I already said I agreed with you but government revenue and economic revenue are completely different things. Those investments do NOT creates large amounts of tax dollars to be given to the federal and/or state governments. What you just said was exactly my point for the benefit of overall economic revenue. Increased investments can help increase tax dollars but the whole Reaganomics to which you cling depends on decreased spending especially in social welfare sectors of the government.

I can sure understand if a person needs temporaty help we have all had hard times maybe loosing a job or whatever but please there are so many people who make a living by receiving aid. You would think they would be trying to help these folks get back on their feet instead of just buying their food, some for years...but I guess some don't want help.

Most should get a job. But they wont. Its called being lazy. A lot of other people in other countries consider US citizens to be the most lazy people. Its why we are so overweight too. The thought of FREEDOM has gone to our heads. We are FREE to do whatever we want. Include live off the state forever. Now, I understand the need for services such as this. But not to support someone forever. We cannot just keep throwing money and resources for it with out any kind of time line for results. Set a time limit of two years. That is enough time for people to get an education, intern, take a pay cut to start a new career and gain experience. Also, if they get assistance from the state, then why are they not the one cleaning up the streets. Community service hours should be mandatory. Who knows? They might actually get some experience that could be used to get a job. Cant walk? Answer a phone for the mayor action line. Have kids? Take them with you when you clean up graffiti.

There's 1002 more people on food stamps in February of this year than there were in February of last year. Wow.
And Dave's right. Put limits on it. Cut off all the folks who are abusing it. While we're at it, make them all pass drug tests too.

That is why this country has gone to the "DOGS"
There are too many people like you that bury their head in the sand and refuse to accept the truth.
Or could it be that you are not intelligent enough to sort through facts? I am referring to the person that deleted my comments at the TW.

I suppose that despite the declining immigrant population, you people will blame them for the increasing food stamp rolls.

Bring back the A&P. I miss those stamps. The sooner I think they should eliminate the stamp biz altogether... it's like drugs and alcohol. If folks need food, they should stand in line a government grocery store vs a corporate or private grocery store.
Heck, I remember waiting in line for my cheese.

Plenty of people on here to jump on the abuse bandwagon, and I’m sure there is plenty. However, before you jump on your high horse remember a lot of those people depend on stamps thru no fault of there own. And with the economy headed for a depression more and more will be getting them. Maybe even you when you’re company folds or you get the ax. Besides I would just as soon my taxes are spent here on an okie than on an Iraqi.

This is how they get in office. Hand out everything pos to grab the minority votes. Only rich people run for office , so they don't see the aftermath in their hoods.
