Horror film trailer on Internet causes stir in Muskogee
By The Associated Press
Published:

Last Modified: 4/12/2008 7:50 PM
MUSKOGEE -- An Oklahoma-made independent film has been pulled from a Muskogee film festival after its Internet trailer caused concern among local residents and prompted an investigation by police and the FBI.
The horror film "A Beautiful Day," produced by Outsider Productions of Shawnee, was to debut April 25 at Muskogee's Bare Bones International Independent Film and Music Festival, but organizers said Friday they pulled the film after the controversy.
"We're going to pull that movie from the festival basically to let the other filmmakers know that to use that type of marketing is not smart and there has to be some kind of consequences to it," said festival director Oscar Ray.
A trailer for the film was posted on the video-sharing site YouTube under the headline, "Warning, Muskogee, OK." The video featured a synthesized voice saying, "People of Muskogee. Open your eyes. April 25th is a day you'll come to remember." Along with images of dark forests, it included the message "the end is coming."
Without context, the video came across as a possible terrorist threat, said Muskogee police spokesman Brad Holt.
Muskogee school officials alerted police to the video after word spread among students. April 25 is prom night for some of the schools, which only heightened concern, Holt added.
Muskogee police contacted the FBI and began investigating with federal agents before determining it was not a threat but a film trailer.
"Meant as a publicity stunt and just went bad," Holt said. "They didn't
mention anything about a movie. It sounded like a threat."
James Bridges, who helped produce the film, said he posted the video on April 4 and apologized for the fear created by the trailer.
He said the video was intended to be the first in a series of mysterious snippets that would gradually reveal more information, a marketing tactic used for movies like "Cloverfield" and "The Blair Witch Project."
"It wasn't a hoax. We weren't trying to scare people as a hoax," he said. "We were trying to actually promote our movie."
Bridges said when he saw comments on the video in which people thought it was a threat, he immediately tried to contact Muskogee police and added a disclaimer to the trailer. He ultimately decided to remove the video.

Good grief! The producers should have realized the fear in Americans regarding terrorist.
Also, it is Muskogee, Oklahoma and the fear of anything that does not smell/look/sound like an Okie freaks them out.

Look @ what your govt. has done to you!! All of you. Can we not walk to our car, use the restroom, or eat out for dinner w/out being afraid?
Yes, the govt. has used scare tacticts to captivate the american people over the past 7 years. The patriot act (3000 pages) was signed right after Sept attacks. Who read 3000 pages to see what it all means before voting? Noone...the govt. now has more centralized power and your rights are violated.
Now, they are coming to every american with a "Tax Rebate" to save us from, well, US! These scare tactics and "oh we need you big govt" campaigns do not work in the long run. They only fuel the fire. Sorry but we have all been let down on this one.

OMG. The Muskogee Police contacted the FBI??? What a bunch of imbeciles. Ignorance has a price, folks... Absolutely ridiculous. They should be apologizing the film's producers, not pulling their submission.

That same Festival at one time honored Merle Haggard's "I'm Proud to Be an Okie from Muskogee."
--
The song was a tongue-in-cheek song written by two men who had never even lived in Oklahoma, let alone lived in Muscogee.
--
Haggard's parents were Checotah natives; but, he was born in Bakersfield, CA.
--
What was the "end that was coming" in that movie trailer on You Tube? It was the end of waiting to see the short film, "A Beautiful Day for the Lord's Work."

Why not investigate
, Tulsa (4/12/2008 5:02:02 PM)
Why not investigate? It was determined to be a movie trailer, it is the festival's decision to pull it, not the police, not the FBI.
Look at the OKC Bombing and 911, you all are probably the same ones who scream the government knew or should have known and did not investigate.

When are people going to stop being such frightened, fearful, childish cowards?!?
I for one am growing less compassionate and understanding towards people whose lives are dominated by fear of terrorism. And the thing is the Bible predicted this very sign of the end times ("men's hearts failing them for fear").
If people want to live their lives in fear, that's their business. But when people cannot put two dates together and not only not come to a completely logical conclusion, but rather arrive at a totally illogical one, then it behooves those of us with more level heads to say to people like Brad Holt: You're a coward. You're not making people safer, and this extreme buffoonery on your part should -- and will -- mark you. In yellow.
Closing a school indefinitely out of terrorist fears because someone wrote some cryptic graffiti, or reacting badly to a enigmatic "YouTube" video will only make it that much more of a game to those would disrupt the normal course of our lives.
Grow up people, and stop being such "scaredey-cats". It makes you look pathetic.

Oooooooo..... Tulsa beware cause you will be smashed this SUNDAY, SUNDAY, SUNDAY... (this was suppose to be reference to a monster truck rally for all retarded/mentally disabled/ IQ Challaged/ or whatever the the correct PC term is for it) This is why the world is the way it is; cause little Timmy might see something like this video and get offended or scared... What should scare little Timmy is that he is on the computer and not spending time with his parents because they are off going to semiars or reading books on how to build a connection with their parents because Oprah said this is what to do. All of this makes me sick; the world has gone to being a field of freakin' pansies. Welcome to a sad sad un-understanding place; Oklahoma 2008.

...and who are the ultimate pansies in this scenario? The film festival and the filmmaker for pulling their film in the face of controversy! Bare bones is exactly what you are for not having any balls! And you filmmakers, its probably a good thing your film won't screen, cause if you wither in the face of a little bad press, it means you'll never last in Hollywood...

If so, this would explain a lot of the problem with the film.

The person who is using my surname also makes fun of my legal given names and he as an obsession with using gerbils in a disgusting and abusing way.

Because he is consistent in his writing style, he gives himself away every time he posts an off-topic comment.

While I was not an English major in college, I did do some substituting for English teachers in the Claremore and Tulsa Public Schools Systems back in the early 1970s.

I wouldn't be surprised if this particular guy's middle name is "Ray." I know a man in his 30s who has that middle name, which he does not like at all, and I see that just last week a finance company took him to court because he was not paying on his debts. It's good to have access to the OCIS online.
