OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Oklahoma Senate on Tuesday passed a measure to create an official state rock 'n' roll song.

House Concurrent Resolution 1047, by Rep. Joe Dorman, D-Rush Springs, and Sen. John Ford, R-Bartlesville, directs the Oklahoma Historical Society to host a Web site and have polling locations to allow the public to nominate songs. The Web site can be accessed at www.tulsaworld.com/staterocksong.

The song must be written or performed by an Oklahoman to be eligible, according to the Web site.

The resolution notes that Oklahoma has "many exceptional rock-and-roll performers and song writers and no official Rock and Roll Song has been adopted."

Nominations so far include "Oklahoma Swing" by Reba McIntire and Vince Gill, "You Dropped a Bomb on Me" by the Gap Band, "Oklahoma Nights" by Jimmy Webb, and "Nev er Been to Spain" by Three Dog Night.

"It helps promote the history and influence of music in Oklahoma," Ford said.

Ford said there is a high level of interest among the public regarding the selection of an official rock song.

The Oklahoma History Center will celebrate the state's rock 'n' roll heritage in an exhibit called "Another Hot Oklahoma Night," set to open in 2009.

"The suggestions have already been rolling in, with people wanting to nominate songs by Oklahoma artists including The Flaming Lips, Hoyt Axton and Leon Russell," Dorman said. "There are a lot of great tunes from Oklahoma and about Oklahoma. This gives us a great opportunity to showcase those artists and let the public help us celebrate our rock and roll heritage."

When the heck did Reba McEntire and Vince Gill start playing rock music? C'mon people!

My personal nomination - "After Midnight" JJ Cale

"Cocaine" by JJ might be a bit more appropriate but that isn't going to happen...

What a complete waste of legislative time. They could be using their time on more productive activities, like voting for the official village idiot (nominees to be chosen from the Legislative body).

How about the State Legislators vote on a way to figure out how to get money to fix Bridges and Highways so there is not another tragic motorcycle death that happened on I 244 this past Sunday? What a waste of time and money. Here is a song title for you. "I have my pockets lined with the tax payer’s dime, I’m a politician!"

The most appropriate one for the Legislature would be an old, World War II song, "Get up off you're big fat rusty dusty."

"Tulsa Time" was first recorded by Country Singer, Don Williams. It is NOT a rock song.
"Tulsa Time" was written by Danny Flowers, a member of Williams' band. Flowers was not born in Oklahoma.
--
But, Hoyt Axton who wrote "Never Been to Spain," was born in Duncan, Oklahoma.
--
"Okie From Muskogee" was not written by nor originally recorded by Oklahoma Natives. In fact, it was written as a tongue-in-cheek song, meaning that it was making fun of folks who lived in Muskogee, Oklahoma.

YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!!!!! I agree with most of the people above me... when did Reba and Vince start singing "Rock and Roll"?!?!?!?!?! And WHY are we wasting TIME and MONEY on this PETTY crap when that time and money should go towards FIXING 169 for the SECOND TIME!!!! Have any of you driven on it since it was "resurfaced"? THAT IS UNACCEPTABLE!!!!!!! It's worse that before!!
