Spat over delegates marks GOP meeting
By RANDY KREHBIEL World Staff Writer
Published:

Last Modified: 5/4/2008 2:07 AM
Oklahoma Republicans like to brag that they're about as conservative as it gets.
Apparently that wasn't conservative enough for about a third of the delegates to Saturday's state GOP convention at the Renaissance Tulsa Hotel and Convention Center.
The Liberty Coalition, made up of disgruntled supporters of Ron Paul and other unsuccessful Republican presidential candidates, attacked the state executive committee's slate of at-large national convention delegates and alternates as insufficiently conservative and tried to force a roll call vote on its own slate of delegates.
In the end, the best it could manage was a roll call vote on the executive committee slate, which was approved with about two-thirds of the vote.
The faction did claim one victory -- one of its members, former attorney general candidate James Dunn of Luther, edged out Steve Curry of Oklahoma City for national committeeman.
Carolyn McLarty of Mutual was elected national committeewoman.
Fifteen of Oklahoma's 41 national delegates were chosen earlier at district conventions. Three delegates -- the state chairman and the two national committee members -- are ex officio members of the delegation.
Twenty-three at-large delegates and 23 alternates, all pledged to Oklahoma GOP primary winner and presumptive Republican nominee John McCain, were chosen at Saturday's convention.
Party rules call for the executive committee to choose a
slate to be voted on at the convention.
More than 100 people applied, party officials said, about twice the usual number.
The Liberty Coalition opposed all but five of the executive committee choices. Among those judged too liberal were Tulsans Howard Barnett (former Planned Parenthood board member), Frazier Henke (Oklahoma Center for Community and Justice member) and Daryl Woodard (Rudy Giuliani donor).
Others opposed included Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett, Oklahoma County Assessor and former legislator Leonard Sullivan and a number of congressional and party staffers.
Charlie Meadows, leader of the dissenters, said the executive committee slate was not "100 percent pro-life" and did not represent the party's statewide membership.
He said Oklahoma's delegation must take a strong anti-abortion position to "send a message to John McCain."
Meadows later said he prefers McCain to a Democratic president but plans to not vote in November because he expects McCain to easily carry Oklahoma.
Meadows and state chairman Gary Jones confirmed that Meadows approached Jones several weeks ago, predicting a confrontation at the convention and offering to defuse it if 12 delegates of the coalition's choosing were placed on the executive committee slate.
Jones refused.
Party officials said the turnout for Saturday's convention was the largest in memory. The crowd was so large it took more than three hours to process all the credentials and delayed the start of meaningful business until almost noon.
That was significant, because the GOP had to be out of its ballroom space at 3 p.m. for another event. In the end, it was unable to vote on the 29-page party platform.
All but one member of the state's Republican congressional delegation -- Sen. Tom Coburn -- attended the convention, and the delayed start gave each of them a chance to address the delegates.
Also speaking were former Gov. Frank Keating, state co-chair of McCain's campaign, Corporation Commissioner Jeff Cloud and House Speaker Chris Benge.

This is really interesting, and confirms what seems to be happening around the country. Conservatives aren't just less than satisfied with the selection of the presumed nominee and rubberstamping of his policies, they are incensed.
I've been a Republican for decades, but there is no way I can vote for McCain, and I've stopped donating to the party since they became just an extension of his campaign. I give directly to those specific candidates I want to support.
Well, I guess every party ends sometime.

McCain is going to need grassroots campaigners in November. Looks like Paul has all that support. Means real trouble for McCain. That is what we get nominating him.

The Republican Party for years has preached "we are a BIG TENT for all to join"...but the same-ole same-ole with a annointed slate of super delegates were elected yesterday. Now we will see what driving out the conservatives will result in...most likely it will allow Hilliary or Obama to get elected.

This was the first meeting of this sort I ever attended, and to say the least, the most disorganized and biased. There was no openness to the multitude of young voters attending. The issues we are dealing with concerning the devaluation of the dollar; North America Union, and the eventual introduction of the "Amero" to replace the dollar, loon, and peso; Oklahoma's abundance of natural gas and oil and its control by big oil; and John McCain's true military colors, i.e, "songbird" status with his former POW's were snubbed. Also, Ron Paul HAS NOT "called in the dogs" yet was not recornized...

Ron Paul an unsuccessful candidate? LOL. Ron Paul is the most successful candidate in modern times, with more grass roots support than possibly any candidate in history. Ah the media bias continues...

If Paul is "the most successful candidate in modern times" why the heck does he only garner around 3-4% of the vote? Is the media tabulating the vote totals? How is it media bias if the majority of the people don't care about or like Ron Paul? How is he a successful candidate if he has lost the primaries and caucuses by such a large margin in each and every race? Maybe you have a different definition of what a successful candidate is? By "successful", do you mean successful in rounding up a very vocal minority? Because as far as I can tell that's all Ron Paul has been "successful" in doing. If he was truly "the most successful candidate in modern times," shouldn't he have, you know, won the primary? Or even won a single primary or caucus? I don't think this is media bias, my friend. I think it's a case of a fringe candidate with a very vocal minority of supporters who don't quite understand when to give it up.

It is true that many factors are looked at for a "successful" candidate. And as you have pointed out Ron Paul garners only 3 to 4% of the vote-yes, this is most likely the case. However, many people vote only because of name recognition etc., tradition etc, and not based on any solid support for a candidate. This is what is not true of Ron Paul's grass roots support. It has been enviously acknowledged by politicians the spectrum over. And the reason we don't give up, is because we can't. I believe in constitutional government and the PRINCIPALS that Ron Paul (and a host of others) actually carry out. I will (by God's grace) believe in them until Christ himself reigns from Zion. Until then, what else am I do to? Particpate in the wickedness (and that is what it is) that is sweeping this country like a flood? So, thus and therefore-in one way or another, we are here to stay. Losing is not an option because losing is considered joining hands with what is going on and THAT I cannot and will not do. Losing is not considered "Ron Paul Losing". That is a semantic....
Give me liberty OR give me death,
Sincerely and in due regards to my countrymen,
Jenn

I suspect that the rumblings come from the fact that you can't use a "cookie cutter" approach to a grass roots movement. Sure, you can get 80% to agree on 80% of the issues but you will never get 100% agreement on any topic/issue. For those who think that a McCain / Paul ticket will carry all the way to the white house - think again. The reality is that the republican party is just as divided as the democratic party right now. The difference will be which party adjusts and conforms enough to get a consortium early enough to gain momentum prior to November. The most unified party will win by the most narrow of margins.
The days of Cum By Ya around the camp fire are gone. Let's just go for something like Gays vs. Straights or Whites vs. Non Whites or Guns vs. No Guns (you get the point) and then build the platform around that. At least then you would have the 80/20 rule kicking in and a possible victory by the Elephants in Nov.
Besides, the Donkeys will control the house and senate. Smells like gridlock even in lil ol' Tulsa.
I'm sending out an S.O.S for Mike Huckabee...........

Maybe if the Paul supporters didn't use Lyndon Larouche type tactics to push their agenda they would be taken a little more seriously. The cult-like, messianic tone of Ron Paul supporters is quite frankly frightening. It's exactly like the Larouche folks I encountered in the Boston Common a few years ago. They have this attitude that they hold some grand enlightened scheme for righting the country, and the rest of us are too dense to understand their "enlightened" ideas. The tactics and attitudes they employ are certainly not going to convince the mainstream to support their agenda. The voters have clearly rejected Paul's platform, as is evident from the 3-4% he garners in most primaries and caucuses. Ron Paul supporters=Lyndon Larouche supporters.
Most sensible voters understand they aren't going to have a candidate that they agree with all the time. I'm a conservative Republican, but I'm also a pragmatist. You have to understand that our government works on compromise. I was not a McCain supporter in the primary, but he won and is our Party's nominee. I will support our nominee as I always have, because he is certainly a better choice than Obama or Hillary.

Republicans . . . the "Big Tent" Party?
Maybe if that party was in a blazing tent (as it would be set up waaaay too close to the required burning cross).
The McCain Plan:
Continue and build on (at least 100 years) Bubba Jr's war.
Continue Bubba Jr's economic policies.
Continue Bubba Jr's foreign policies.
Continue Bubba Jr's meteoric fall in approval (i.e. the lowest in history of ANY "president."
PLEASE bring on Paulie. That 3 to 4% of support - in Republican primaries no less - will translate to maybe 1.5 in the general. Combine the two and you might be up to 20.
Thank you for a Democratic victory in November.

We're supposed to respect you as a journalist and believe this article is unbiased when you can't even get the name of a group right? It's called the Liberty VALUES Coalition- did you not read one of the fliers or see even one of the signs or at least speak to one of it's members? Quite disappointing.
As to mrs. "confused" and his comment on: 'Maybe you have a different definition of what a successful candidate is?' maybe you would like to read what the person said before commenting (better to keep quiet and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt) because what was actually said was: 'Ron Paul is the most successful candidate in modern times, with more grass roots support than possibly any candidate in history.' to which you gave no response other than to talk about other areas in which you consider Ron Paul to be less than a success. You aren't by any chance a lawyer or politician are you? Not actually commenting on what was said but bringing up other issues that have no valid point and trying to say they do... well if you aren't either, you certainly fit the bill.
As to mrs. "frightened": you be as "pragmatic" as you wish. I however will be a person of principle and there are certain principles that I will not bend, change, break, or leave just for the "Party's nominee", and THAT, Justin, is what makes me a true conservative. Voting for the lesser of two evils is still voting FOR EVIL! Voting for good along with 3-4% of the population may not make you "successful" as far as numbers, but it does make you successful as far as moral, character, principles, and values- the things that really count. Numbers and being a part of a majority do not make YOU the person YOU are, they just make you a small part of that majority that voted for that lesser of the evils, but still a part of the majority that put the evil in it's place and therefore makes you accountable for the evil done.

"Me"-- Your post exemplifies what separates a normal, sensible voter from an extremist who whines, complains, and throws a tantrum when they don't get their way. Maybe you and your candidate should have done a better job of convincing the people why your candidate should be supported, how about that? This attitude of "I didn't get my way so I'm going to throw a fit and take my toys and go home," is obnoxious and foolish.

There sure seems to be alot of people saying we didnt convince anyone that RP was a better candidate. We didnt have an opportunity to do so.
You seem so content on blood shed that I cant imagine conservatives funding & falling for this.
In all actuality you guys shouldve done your own homework.
RP is a 10 term congressman, He's had the same platform for over 30 yrs.
He sits on the treasury board for pitys sake. Didnt you hear him tell Ben Bernanke alot of people call him a price fixer to his face live on cnn, c-span or you tube? Or do you know who Ben Bernanke is? He's the guy who is deflating our dollar by lowering the interest rate for wall street. By lowering the interest rates it imposes an invisible tax on the middle classed & poor to wall street.
The Federal Reserve is a private business, Govmnt hired to print US money & LOAN it to us with INTEREST.. in the mists of it all they confiscated all our GOLD.
Who are these Federal Resrv people & where did they come from?
Jesus called these people (in his day) "THE MONEY CHANGERS"
& he ran them out of the temple it was the only time Jesus ever displayed anger. He called them a den of thieves.
They go way back & have been the cause of many wars funding both sides of war for profit.
One Rothchild bragged on how he had made a fortune off one country's fall turning a country of home owners into a country of renters. "Their" legacy is to keep the money in their family lineage forever. David Rockerfeller is one of the main persons who want to merge the world together & form one currency to better control the money & its issuence.
As the poor middle class dwindles (namely the tax payers)" they" need more people bringing in the money. That is the reason they are trying to finalize the NAU asap. & issue the amero dollar.
The Federal are one & the same as the big bankers who have all submitted billions of $$ in losses, The Fedrl Resrv has absorbed alot of them including bear sterns they are also "mainstream media" Alot of them are related by blood or formed together by a mutual interest "GREED"
They are all members of the CFR "Council for foreign Realations", headed up by David Rockerfeller who ownes the UN bldg.
They are forcing other countries to debase their currency to match our deflated $$. How can they do this? Simple..they all have the goods on each other. When they succeed in forming one Gvmnt & one currency we will then be under the UN (which I believe is the beast).
Iraq is an undeclared war & its unconstitutional, & we are in war under UN sanctions & NATO. There is an American embassy in Iraq now completed aprox. the size of the vatican,..meaning our troops will be in Iraq until Christ returns
(I pray it be today as I know I am ready.)
With all the hype of Iran having nuclear power there is a very high possibility that Iran will be nuked..Lets PRAY "they" have enough compassion to make our troops safe, while "they" fulfill "their" agenda, as "colladeral damage" has not been a problem for them in the past.
Ron Paul knows all these things & most of you know them as well.
Ron Paul is the only candidate who wants to end the Federal Reserve, end IRS (who are the debt collectors of the Fedrl resrv)
and also an unconstitutional tax ,it was suspossed to end after it funded what it was created for, only it never ended. So Ron Paul is right in wanting to end it..correction "Repeal it" The UN & NATO are the enforcers of war & whoever is an alli must participate in war.
Our Country has been hijacked & there is nothing anyone can do about it now..its almost too late.
Today there are several Terror drills taking place in Seattle Washington & other states. A few weeks ago 3 states were subjected to Marshall Law & alot of busissness had their computers confiscated.
Now.. I understand what Ron Paul meant when he said there is loss of habeas corpus, warrentless searches & imminent domain,..In Oakland the Govmnt wanted citizens to agree on allowing the police to knock on their doors & take their guns, & offered amnesty if they located unregistered guns t

They would offer amnesty, that didnt fly. Didnt hear it in the news did you?
Most of the mainstream media, & alot of news papers & magizines are owned by one man Rupert Murdoch, who had openly admitted he has attempted to steer media to his views
He is one of these Fedrl Resrv/Bankers/media people I call them the monopoly men also a member of the CFR. Everytime Rupert Murdoch buys a station or news paper we are dumbed down a certain percentage & those of you who still continue to watch the watered down comedy news are the dumbest.
Believe it or not some officials profit from illegal drugs.
Govmnt has made certain natural herbs that can cure deseases illegal as Big pharmaceutical who donate big bucks to campaigns wouldnt like that. If these certain natural herbs were legalized it would stop that kind of corruption, stop drug trafficking & cure people..(but you dont "get it" do you?)
As a Citizen Of the United States it is our duty when Gvmnt has gone corrupt to overthrow the Govmnt THRU our REPRESENTATIVES & elect a Govmnt of integrity & respect for American citizens.
Let it NOT be said that we "VERY" conservitive Ron Paul supporters have NOT done everything in our power to inform help restore America back to the constitution. The Holy Bible says obey the laws of the land..& the laws of THIS land is the Constituion & we stand by that platform even to the extent of ridicule.
We recognize Ron Paul as one of the bravest people in the world for exposing corruption to the root & HIS plan is to yank it
the very source of it out of America's soil.
Everyone should know war=poverty & peace=prosperity.
But it seems that you are content in hearing McCain (who is also a CFR member) sing bomb bomb bomb bombbomb Iran to the tune of the beach boys song "Barbara Ann" than to save our Sovereignty.
McCain may very well get his chance to nuke Iran, My only prayer is that they will keep our troops safe as "colladeral damage has never been a concern to them in the past.
By the way Ron Paul submitted a bill to congress to repeal
ROE VS WADE called life begins at conseption, you wont hear mainstream media report that either.
If someone is censored like RP has been I'd be asking questions (I did & found very logical answers).
Lastly McCain is a gun grabber.

Things you have to believe to be a U.S. Republican today
A. Jesus loves you, and shares your hatred of the environment, homosexuals, and Hillary.
B. Saddam was a good guy when Reagan armed him, a bad guy when Bush's daddy made war on him, a good guy when Cheney did business with him, and a bad guy when Bush needed a "we can't find Bin Laden" diversion.
C. Trade with Cuba is wrong because the country is Communist, but trade with China and Vietnam is vital to a spirit of international harmony.
D. The United States should get out of the United Nations and our highest national priority is enforcing U.N. resolutions against Iran.
E. A woman can't be trusted with decisions about her own body, but multi-national corporations can make decisions affecting all mankind without regulation.
F. The best way to improve military morale is to praise the troops in speeches, while slashing veterans' benefits and combat pay.
G. If condoms are kept out of schools, adolescents won't have sex.
H. A good way to fight terrorism is to belittle our long-time allies, then demand their cooperation and money.
I. Providing health care to all Iraqis is sound policy, but providing health care to all Americans is socialism. HMOs and insurance companies have the best interests of the public at heart.
J. Global warming and tobacco's link to cancer are junk science, but creationism should be taught in schools.
K. A president lying about an extra-marital affair is an impeachable offense, but a president lying to enlist support for a war in which
thousands die is solid defense policy.
L. Government should limit itself to the powers named in the Constitution, which include banning gay marriages and censoring the Internet.
M. The public has a right to know about Hillary's cattle trades, but George Bush's driving and military records are none of our business.
N. Being a druggy is a moral failing and a crime, unless you're a conservative radio host . Then it's an illness and you need our prayers for your recovery.
O. What Bill Clinton did in the 1960s is of vital national interest, but what Bush did in the '60s is irrelevant.
If you don't send it to at least 10 other people, we're likely to be stuck with more Republicans in '08.
Friends don't let friends vote Republican

Thank you,
I too am a registered Republican and I always have been. But, something started going "South" years ago. Have you read the planks of the current Republican party in Oklahoma? To believe that these are the goals, makes you certifiable, at least.
My party on its watch has turned the reins over to large companies and lobbies. How can we allow our Senators and Representatives to set their own salaries and health-care and pensions?
Why on earth should any elected official be allowed to become a lobbyest for at least 25 years after they have left office. All they do is continue to cause problems. And, how about the Pac to Pac slush funding, and gerrymandering which keeps the Representatives from being true representatives of the people of their region. These people were supposed to be common folk, not professional pollititians. sp? sorry I have to get back to work, but I like you would like to get government out of my personal life and get it out of its current trashy corrupt state.
