ORU worth saving, donor family says
By APRIL MARCISZEWSKI World Staff Writer
Published:
5/13/2008 2:05 AM
Last Modified: 8/18/2008 11:46 AM
Complete Coverage:
Read the latest ORU stories, view the lawsuit and other documents and watch slide shows and video.
Mart Green's family made an unusual move when it donated $70 million to an organization in trouble financially and in need of leadership changes, Green said Monday at a Tulsa Press Club Page One Luncheon.
The donation to Oral Roberts University also was five times bigger than any gift the family had made, he said.
"Why would we give to something that's not doing that well?" he asked.
The answer: ORU's graduates. The Green family had come in contact with them and knew that they had received a quality education.
President Richard Roberts' resignation in November signaled to the Greens that Roberts thought the university was more important than his own reputation, Green said.
The Green family decided to make an offer.
"We as a family have stepped in and said, 'ORU is worth keeping,' " he said.
Mart Green founded the Mardel Christian & Education retail chain, and his father, David Green, founded the Hobby Lobby chain. With those backgrounds, tackling the faltering business aspects of ORU looked a lot easier than producing quality graduates, which ORU does "really, really, really well," Mart Green said.
ORU received
the Council for Higher Education Accreditation's 2007 Award for Institutional Progress in Student Learning Outcomes, for implementing a program that helps faculty members determine whether students are becoming spiritually alive, intellectually alert, physically disciplined, socially adept and professionally competent — that is, fulfilling ORU's mission of whole-person education, according to Green and a December 2006 ORU news release.
"What you measure, you get better at," Green said. "We're only going to get better."
That said, he sees four "dragons" that ORU needs to slay: its debt, deferred maintenance on the campus, declining enrollment and its deficit.
Enrollment for fall is 97 students fewer than last year at this time, but the gap between last year's enrollment and this year's has been shrinking, he said.
Green sees specific enrollment goals as the domain of the new president, whom ORU hopes to have in place by summer 2009 or sooner, he said.
Decisions about new buildings — including ORU's long-planned student center — also will fall to the president. Trustees and administrators are focusing on bringing existing buildings up to date.
Green said he will remain chairman of the board of trustees as long as the trustees keep him in that position.
He said he expects to stay involved at ORU long-term, although he does not know what form that will take. In time, his involvement will become less visible, he said.
"I'm more excited about ORU today than I was back in November," Green said. "We have incredible faculty, incredible students."

To Truth #1:
Things like this need to come out into the open. People don't realize all the lies and secrets that are hidden in regards to Oral, Richard, & Lindsey. It is a can of worms that needs to be opened and thank God it has begun and I emphasize begun. Just because Mart Green came forward with &70 million to rescue the school and boot Richard doesn't change the fact that there is a mountain of crap that still needs to be brought forward like the above #1 comment.
It amazes me that there hasn't been a case opened against Richard & Lindsey to be prosecuted for fraud, embezzlement, and robbery. The fact that the investigation done against them was never released to the public says a lot. Somebody paid somebody off in order for that to have been kept secret.
THE TRUTH NEEDS TO BE TOLD. THE TRUTH NEEDS TO BE TOLD. THAT IS THE ONLY WAY ORU CAN TRULY MOVE ON AND BECOME SET FREE FROM THE ENTANGLED WEB THAT THE ROBERTS HAVE SPUN TO KEEP AND MAINTAIN CONTROL OF WHAT THEY THINK IS RIGHTFULLY THERES NO MATTER HOW DELUTED THAT IS. RICHARD & LINDSEY ARE OPERATING IN SPIRITS THAT ARE NOT OF GOD WHICH IS WHY THEY HAVE BEEN ABLE TO GET AWAY WITH WHAT THEY HAVE WITHOUT NO CONSEQUENCES......THINK ABOUT IT.

I have a degree from ORU that is USELESS. My parents wasted over $26,000 on my education and every job I go to get , they don't recognize ORU. It's a crooked university and the degree's that people get from there are worthless. If I had known what I know now I'd of went to TCC or anywhere else instead. And if anyone thinks any different ask the 26 other people I know with the same issue. Richard is as crooked as they come and it's finally coming out and Lindsey, well we'll just say she gets around the "campus."

I received a degree from ORU when hardly anyone knew about
the school; it had just received accreditation for the first time and I was afraid as to how my applications to grad schools would go.
Needless to say, I was accepted at all the schools where I applied, including two ivy-league universities, one of which I attended and finished at and am so grateful for the education that I received at ORU. It was first-rate!

#3 needs to take a good look in the mirror. Ask yourself about
attitude, grades, demeanor, relationship with others, etc. during
your time at ORU and after.
Most often I hear that companies WANT ORU grads!
Quit blaming everyone else!

Oh my, the mythology returns. I too was pleased with my ORU education (class of 1981 in history) -- even as I am on record as I dearly was so tired of carrying around the ORU cross on my c.v. ever since.... (especially in academic circles) As Vinton McCabe put it, most of us have long played the "Oral who" game in our professional lives outside of Tulsa.... and we weren't happy in doing so. That's precisely why a lot of us got involved to restore the integrity of the place, to challenge the RR "culture of fear," to press for real excellence and a cleaning out of the BORg (the Word of Faith money changers) Any wonder that so few ORU alumni gave to ORU -- until very recently? Again, I remain proud of my ORU education -- in spite of the administrative compromises over the past quarter century. I am so hopeful that ORU might yet renew the vision, but without illusion or nonsense about how "wonderful" all has been.....
BTW, last I checked, even the man who received an honorary doctorate from ORU this year, an ORU alumnus (also class of 1981), doesn't mention his ORU on his web site resume. Telling.

#9 -- I'm glad you're back. April is the reporter on the stories, but I doubt she influences web decisions and she may not have even seen your deleted post. (Suggestion - try sending it to her directly)
Recall that TW at times had several reporters following various angles of ORU, April had her scoops along the way. May more follow.
As for the substance of your deleted post, are you the same poster from Last November? Can you suggest where to find the confirmation you suggest is available?

If you have the info I posted before, go to the public records with the name I gave.

much learnin' dun, like ya shouda have! Now git to TCC fer some hep.
TCC is a great school too!

#3 Lesson 1: "degrees" is plural, like more than one.
Lesson 2: "degree's" = "degree is"
Wow! "I'd of went to TCC"???? Please enroll anywhere you can and learn your native language! Now wonder you're having trouble with jobs- it's not the ORU degree or their top-notch English Department that's to blame.
Git sum reel lernin' dun. Anywhere!
You sound like a typical over-indulged
brat who coasted through college and then blamed everyone
else if it didn't go your way.

I see that a #9 comment has been deleted. That is why one should properly refer to the "screen name" of the one who posted the comment. The guy who bragged about getting over 100 screen names registered yesterday had been getting his stupid comments deleted right and left.
I don't have any complaints about what I actually learned in the classroom for 5 semesters when I was in the Master of Arts in Theological and Historical Studies degree program at ORU. I did have a complaint about a theology professor who let student in his classes grade each other's term papers and tell him what grade he should the paper. The person who graded my paper for the Old Testament Theology class was an ORU graduate before he enrolled in graduate school. He did not like people who did not get a Bachelor's degree from ORU. He told the professor that I only deserved a C grade because I didn't follow the ORU undergrad rule for term papers. But, I followed the same rules used for Grad Students at Northeastern State in Tahlequah.
A few years ago, I was posting in a Christian magazine's forum and a man who had gone to ORU as a grad student saw what I posted about that particular professor. He said the professor was still doing that when he went there after I did.
I have never used what I learned at ORU on a job where I earned money. But, if I had completed the degree program, I probably would have retired as a theology professor at a Christian University somewhere.
I want ORU to get back to its original mission which was a good one. Oh, Mart Green has a daughter who will be going to ORU this fall.

Hi "truth" -- You've repeatedly referenced public records as available to confirm you contentions. You apparently have great conviction about your view, and fear that "the family" is battling to keep "the truth" out of the public eye. Yet you've not been very specific about what public records might be available and where. Ordinarily, aren't such records kept sealed? (e.g., when involving private family matters?) If you could cite a date and specific court or public records, it would, shall we say, be helpful in evaluating the merits of your claim.
If you would prefer to discuss this off-line, please send a query to my email. My id is hawaiwill and the email service provider is yahoo. (Put 'em together) Thanx

I loved ORU but lived through some trials in the mid-80's. I NEVER had an issue with employment. In fact, it's been a real plus. I work for the top PC maker in the world now and am working with some of the largest companies in the world. Not just me, but another person on my team is an ORU grad who has had a large amount of success. I credit ORU for helping me develop an attitude the employers want. THANK YOU ORU!!

======================
PHOOEY....ORU was founded on Godly principals, by a man of God. It was like no other university in the world. It was truly blessed. But like everything else, humans make mistakes and these mistakes cost them. Nevertheless, if you take away God, Oral, Richard and then change the name, it will be just another university and the many pastors and Christian people who would have sent their children there, will simply find other places to send their children.
I am glad though that Richard is gone because he can now concentrate on the ministry and as I understand it, his ministry is really growing and he has a really nice building now.

Again I say, "If you're without sin, cast the first stone." Also, complaining, accusing, calling names, grumbling, etc. now is like a blind man throwing stones. Why don't all you accusers wait until the dust in court has settled with the final judgement (and not just hearsay and the biased reporting or opinionated reporting of liberal media who have an axe to grind)? To be factual, everything so far is just name calling and mud slinging. Show me proof (written and/or with 2 or more reliable, non-biased witnesses) and I'll go along with you name callers and accusers. You don't like Church, God, Christians, Jesus, etc., fine. BUT GIVE ME PROOF! Why don't all of you name callers wait until the judge bangs the gavel and says who's guilty? I don't care how long it takes to settle this. You guys accuse and started this, then why don't you wait and finish it (or have the guts to see it finished)? You afraid to be told you were a gutless, low down, bald faced hypocritical "know it all"?

I am one that would be stoned - I know I have sinned and I know I- me and only me - have to make my peace with God. I am a Christian - but I am ashamed of being called that these day - as that is what all the people like the Roberts and the rest of the TV preachers call themselves - and I want nothing to do with them or tNNef's.
I have been on the comments since the start last Oct/Nov. I have met several very interesting and knowledgeable people. Have had conservation over lots of points of religion - history (which is what you need to know to really know what you believe - unless you only take the word of the person in front of you on Sunday.)
I have lost a job because I knew that money was not going where it saO

Something happed while I was posting so I will finish.
The first paragraph should end with just them.
The last word it was in the the bokks.
I never went to ORU nor did my children - so I really don't have a horse in this race. But -- Tulsa is my home - I am interested in what the rest of the world thinks of our schools - I am not afraid to be called a gutless, low down, bald face hypocrite "know it all" if you think that is what we all were that commented on these articles are.
I don't know how to learn without discussion of lots of people - reading lots of books - learning in anyway that is out there. When you reach the point of thinking you understand something and want to take it as your own then that knowledge becomes your own - but in any case it is your own ideas and not someone else's - who are entitled to that. My rights become not my rights when they impose on someone other rights - THAT IS WHAT YOU ARE DOING.
