John Tyler Hammons: “It’s about Muskogee, period.”

MUSKOGEE — John Tyler Hammons, a 19-year-old college freshman, made mayoral history Tuesday night after handily defeating a three-time former mayor.

Nearly 70 percent of Muskogee's voters chose Hammons to become Muskogee's youngest mayor ever over Hershel McBride, 70.

When the votes were tallied, Hammons came in with 3,703 votes compared to McBride's 1,616 votes, according to unofficial results.

"This is not about me anymore. It's about where Muskogee is going. It's about Muskogee, period," Hammons said at a watch party at Cowboy barbecue restaurant, where about 50 supporters gathered.

McBride called Hammons about 8:10 p.m. to tell the political newcomer he would support him.

"I'm disappointed, but I'm not ashamed of my record," McBride said. "We had a lot of growth."

McBride attributed his loss to a nationwide trend for change.

Hammons said he felt like he was able to connect with voters and show a clear distinction between himself and his opponent.

Those who know him say they are not surprised by Hammons' success.

"It's to be expected," said Chris Reese, a friend from elementary school. "I knew he would end up here. Ambition — he just wants it that bad."

Brian Doerner, Hammons' former government teacher at Muskogee High School, said his youth will be an asset.

"He had the audacity to say that someday he'll be governor, and maybe president," Doerner said.

In
high school, Hammons was president of Roughers Against Illegal Drugs and the Student Council.

But even Hammons' father, Marshall Hammons, didn't think his son's political career would happen so soon.

"I didn't know I was going to get on the ride so quickly," Marshall Hammons said.

About 7:52 p.m., Hammons' father announced that it was mathematically impossible for his son to lose the election.

The crowd roared with approval, and Hammons was swept into a bear hug by campaign manager Jordan Stevens, the 27-year-old mayor of Oktaha.

Hammons is a full-time political science and public administration major at the University of Oklahoma, and a 2007 graduate of Muskogee High School.

He said he would transfer to Northeastern State University at Tahlequah if he won.

Hammons succeeds Wren Stratton, who chose not to seek another term as mayor.

There were two other City Council seats decided.

In Ward 2, Charles Shawn Raper defeated Frank C. Borovetz Jr. and in Ward 4, Jackie DeWayne Luckey defeated Troy Earl Stoutermire.

Does no one find it interesting that a 19 year old can win the mayoral race in a large town and not even have a college degree ? I don't ! Try moving up the ladder at your company without a degree, even after 20 years and see how that works for ya.

College degree is not required to be President of the United States, so there is no reason why it should be for the mayor of Muskogee. The job is about vision, judgment and leadership, and the campaign itself usually embodies and shows if those qualities are present.

It's all fun and games until somebody loses an eye. This kid has about the same experience to be mayor as obama has to be president.

This just shows people are so desperate for change that they are willing to do rash and illogical things -- like elect a 19-year-old as mayor. Let's just hope nothing goes awry in Muskogee that needsto be handled by an experienced adult. And if it does, I don't live in Muskogee!

Maybe it shows that a college degree is not all cracked up to what it's to be. 4 more years of education does'nt necesarily make one any smarter..............

A smart young man who has not been corrupted by politics and life experience. May be what every City needs.

Aw, come on "gambler" you know you passed on Al Gore , a Vietnam vet, congressman, senator and vice-president for 8 years to vote for Bush, short term governor of a weak governor state, and a man who was a failure at every single thing he had ever attempted in his life that didn't involve handouts from his dad and his dad's friends. You're ready to vote for 4 more years of the same style of "leadership" aren't you?

It's nice to see that roughly 10% of the population of Muskogee turned out to vote. Democracy at its best.

"Hammons is a full-time political science and public administration major at the University of Oklahoma, and a 2007 graduate of Muskogee High School."

Although he does not have his degree because he is ONLY nineteen years old, he is currently pursuing his degree and with all his other outstanding credentials, I'm betting he is going to be one incredible mayor!

Congratulations and good luck, Mr. Hammons!

Congratulations Mr. Hammons, now who will be signing all the official Muskogee City
documents that require an individual to be no less than twenty-one years of age (21) by federal, state, county, and city laws.
Congratulations to the residents of Muskogee city for electing an individual that can’t legally purchase beer, enter a club or bar, nor has any life experience other than mommy and daddy.
Again congratulations Mr. Hammons and Muskogee City.

Worry not. He wil be getting more advice than he can possible stand. Give the youngster a chance. Muskogee has its share of power brokers and big money politicals, who will bully him with varying degrees of success, but his youth has to bearing on that. Lets just see what happens. The young will be running things soon enough. Get used to it Grandma.

How exciting for this young man and the city of Muskogee! I don't think that a college degree is necessary for this type of job. As long as he is eager to help the people of the city and be committed to his job, he will do fine. Congratulations, youg man!

With all due respect, a degree does not guarantee one has the wisdom or commonsense to use their education, however life experience can and as time goes by usually does.
Remember the states were forced (by “MADD” and parents under the direction of President Reagan), to raise the drinking age from eighteen years old (18) to twenty-one years old (21) because citizens claimed that age groups were to immature to handle alcohol.
I have this question, how can that same age groups have the maturity and wisdom to guild, operate, make civil decisions, emergency and legal decisions for the residents of a city?
If you want an eighteen (18) or nineteen (19) year old running your live, than lets change all laws that deny them the same rights as a twenty-one year old (21).
Come on Muskogee start the movement with you new mayor.

A lot of times age does not matter.
The mayor in this hick town is around 50 years old and has the mentality of a billy goat.
He reminds me of Gomer Pyle on the Andy Griffith show.
Best of luck to this young mayor in Muskogee.

Senator Corn, Poteau, was in his very early twenties when he was a State Rep. and look what a great job he has done.

It is interesting that some folks just saw a few key words and ignored the fact that the new mayor, John Tyler Hammons, is going to finish his degree at NSU.
