Hispanic leaders say they are working to register more voters

Catch up on all the Tulsa World stories about HB 1804, including documents, videos and the award-winning series "Bordering on a Problem."
OKLAHOMA CITY -- Heartened by a federal judge's decision to halt some provisions of House Bill 1804, Hispanic leaders said Monday at a state Capitol news conference that they are working to register more voters.
“There will be more Hispanics going to the polls in November than ever in the history of Oklahoma,” said Victor Orta, leader of the Coalition for the American Dream of Tulsa.
However, State Election Board Secretary Mike Clingman said he has not seen an upsurge in voter registration for this fall's elections.
Blanca Thames of Tulsa said she has been working since the last state elections two years ago, and has helped register probably 1,000 more voters.
Thames said the American Dream coalition has been setting up registration areas at places where Hispanics go, such as Wal-Mart stores. “But we register people in general, not just Hispanics,” she said.
Thames said Hispanic newspapers in Oklahoma also are encouraging members of their communities to vote.
Last Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Robin Cauthron of Oklahoma City granted a preliminary injunction sought by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to prohibit implementation of part of HB 1804, which the Legislature overwhelmingly passed and the governor signed last year. The bill is considered possibly the toughest anti-immigration state law in the country.
Basis of the injunction was that it could pre-empt federal law. A hearing on a permanent injunction has not been set.

Too bad Bush just signed an executive order requiring all contractors and others who do business with the federal government are legal.

"The bill is considered possibly the toughest anti-immigration state law in the country."
Correction: The bill is considered possibly the toughest anti-illegal state law in the country.
Maybe there hasn't been an "upsurge in voter registration for this fall's elections" because the vast majority of unregistered Hispanics cannot legally vote.

I was thinking the same thing Mary Francis regarding your comment about stolen identities. On the upside, Hispanics are less inclined to vote for Obama since he is black (actually bi-racial), so they would probably vote for McCain.

Most presidential issues dwarf in contrast to the expenditure of illegal immigration? You wouldn't think so, when you listen to the complicity of the pro-illegal immigrant organism. The amount of money that taxpayers are expected to pay, for the hires of parasite businesses is just astronomical. If our government was just extending a helping hand, to our own legal population, who in their time of need could rely on the safety-net.
However the welfare state has become a cash-cow for anybody who manages to slip past the border patrol, ignore their visa overstay or even leave a ocean going vessel without permission. Without papers they are illegal and should be deported. Today! More than ever, we need the pending Federal SAVE ACT(H.R.4088) because a new AMNESTY will be signed into law, with the next president. Then millions more will come and nothing on earth will stop the new deluge of poor. Details at NUMBERSUSA.

How much of an affect does the 20-50 million influx of the illegal aliens have of the skyrocketing fuel, food and health care cost?

America first, don't be a dolt. This story has nothing to do with immigration. There are plenty of hispanic citizens who have every right to vote. The point is to get them registered. You need a hobby.
Brittanicus, if you want to talk about out of control spending, let's discuss the Iraq war that taxpayers are expected to pay for. What was it... $341 million a day?

"There are plenty of hispanic citizens who have every right to vote. The point is to get them registered."
Why does there need to be a special effort to get Hispanic voters registered? Are they incapable of getting themselves registered like the rest of us?
If they can't register without "help", should they really be voting?

Rocks, I'm sure they're capable. There is as much voter apathy in the hispanic community as there is in other segments of the population. It's a convenience and hopefully will draw more hispanic voters out to the polls this year. Don't act dumb. There are registration drives for young voters, hispanic voters, asian voters (you should look up the apia vote site to see what real asians are concerned with in the upcomming elections), religious voters, homosexual voters, black voters, everyone. The whole point is to get people out to vote. The democratic process is pointless if only 40% of registered voters turnout to vote.

"all you need is a valid drivers license to register to vote.
Why does there need to be a special effort to get Hispanic voters registered?
.-.-.-.-.-.
to combat the bigotry and hatred rampant in this state"
If all you need is a valid drivers license to register to vote, how does "bigotry and hatred" keep these people from registering to vote? Please explain.

To :) - I'm not acting dumb, I'm asking questions about your "dumb" reasons.
If they are not motivated to register to vote, it's their own "dumb" fault!

Wait, I know - because they're anti-uhhmerican/traitor/terrorist/liberals, right roxie?
If they look just like you and me, how will we recognize them? I'm scared... LOL!!!

The population of LEGAL immigrants from Mexico is growing rapidly. I hope that they register to vote and turn out in huge numbers.
If you think that the newly-registered Hispanic voters will support the party that brought us HB 1804, you're whistling past the graveyard.
You're in a hole, Republicans. Keep digging.

The order says federal departments and agencies, huh? What does that have to do with the injuction holding up 1804? Not much, I guess. Keep clutching to that dream, though.

Hey America First, tell me again how successful the "anti-illegal" candidates have been in important elections? Oh thats right, they usually LOSE. Could it be because Americans can think for themselves and don't listen the xenophobic rhetoric?
I would just like to add:
Don't you think it's wierd that you sit here all day spouting off about how the MAJORITY of okies support 1804, then when you put up your own anti-immigration, hate-chat website, only 5 people sign up over 3 months? Are you really that blind?

We live in the United States of America, not the united states of mexico or Canada. If your not proud of where your from then get out, otherwise protect our freedoms from criminals who should be prosecuted for illegally trespassing on American (not mexican or canadian) soil. Daven, I bet if someone broke into your house you would want them prosecuted, well these criminals are breaking into mine and I want them out!

You check the status of those breaking into your house? Wow.
Also, does that also apply to those flying the confederate flag? Since this is the the USA. Be proud of the country or get out right?
You're right, it is the United States OF America. North America that is. Did you know there is a South America too??
And last but not least, most legal Mexican-Americans do not support illegals.

:) - Businesses can still be fined and illegals can still be deported for employment law violations.
Don't forget that a judge ordered a saddle and tack manufacturing company in Sulphur to pay $51,000 in fines in connection with violations of immigration law.
Billy Cook pleaded guilty to two misdemeanors immigration violations and was given a $3,000 fine on each count. The 77-year-old owner of Billy Cook Harness and Saddle also was given two years of probation on each misdemeanor count.
U.S. Attorney Sheldon Sperling said Tuesday Cook agreed with his longtime employee, Rutilio Osornio, to hire illegal aliens Osornio introduced to Cook.
Osornio pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count and was given $3,000 in fines and two years of probation.
In August 2006, a federal search warrant was executed at the business and 51 illegal aliens were found to be employed at the factory.
"Bottom line? The aliens were removed and the employer is being held responsible."

smiley,,you have got to be the biggest bleeding heart liberal I have ever come across. You are excited that the LEGAL population of Mexicans is increasing. Great in your worl we should just move over and let them have it. If they can't speak english so therefor can't understand how to register, forget them.
You Dens keep saying that the Republicans are so bad, we dug our own grave. HUMMMM let's see Clinton dropped bombs on Bosnia schools killing children. WOW that's a great role model. Wait didn't he also have to much extra marital fun? Oh yeah he left this country with a huge debt problem to. If you ask me the Democrats dug the hole, that we just can't get out of. Then you always bring up Iraq. At the time we entered Iraq the Dems had a huge part of the Congress that agreed to got there in the first place. Face liberals you haven't got a leg to stand on. Forget the illegals they need to get out. We really don't care if their legal counterparts can vote or not. When they do learn english and vote then look out. The world will change then all to the sound of the porcelin god flushing.
