Group collects PJs for GIs
Charlene Hines, 12 (right), of Collinsville, whose father served in the military in Iraq, holds a poster Thursday outside the Wal-Mart in Owasso for a GI Pajama Drop for wounded troops in Iraq. JAMES GIBBARD/Tulsa World

OWASSO — It's difficult to find a hospital patient who hasn't suffered the indignity of a flimsy gown.
Julie Dermody doesn't want the nation's troops to endure the same overexposure.
"I told my friend the other day, 'They've got our back, so it's time for us to cover theirs,' " the Oologah resident said.
To that end, Dermody organized Thursday's "GI Pajama Party Drop" at the Wal-Mart Supercenter.
For nearly five hours, people jump-started the Independence Day weekend by helping outfit injured troops serving in Iraq.
Laura Anderson of Owasso stopped by to do her part.
"My late husband (Ronald Huffaker) landed in Vietnam on his 21st birthday," she said. "And when he came back, he got spit on."
A Marine who served for four years, Huffaker died in 1995 of Lou Gehrig's Disease, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
Anderson said she heard of the pajama drive and thought it was "a great thing to do." But she added, "It's not as nice as what they are doing for me."
The jammies for GIs concept was fast-tracked by Dermody's brother Richard Hines, who works at Camp Gruber.
Hines, a sergeant in the Oklahoma Army National Guard, returned in November from spending 12 months in Iraq.
He learned from a Guard lieutenant deployed in Iraq that troops recovering in the Baghdad hospital often were caught with their pants down.
"They bring them in there, all messed up," Hines said. "They cut their uniforms off, and
they've got nothing to wear other than maybe a hospital gown."
Hines sought the aid of his sister, who in February began spreading the message via fliers, word of mouth and a blog.
Setting up shop at Bethel Baptist Church in Owasso, where she is a member, Dermody has helped dispatch to Iraq more than 100 pairs of T-shirts and sleep pants.
Volunteers and church youths package the pajamas in one-gallon Ziploc bags that also contain handwritten cards of encouragement.
"That's what everybody wants to know — what they can do," Dermody said. "It's a little thing but it's a big thing. We want to collect enough so that any injured soldier there is going to be able to walk away with dignity," she said.
Helping promote the drive Thursday were Danny and Jody Eberle. Danny Eberle parked his 1992 white Chevrolet pickup next to the dropoff stand.
The Eberles' way of honoring U.S. troops, the truck bears the signatures of about 600 service members, past and present.
John Bender, the Eberles' grandson, is an Army National Guard member who's training at Fort Sill to be a turret gunner.
He is scheduled to be deployed to Iraq next month, Jody Eberle said.
"I think this is wonderful," Danny Eberle said of the pajama drive. "It won't degrade the soldiers like having to wear that smock. They will be covered. They will have a little bit more respect for themselves."
Dermody said the pajama effort will continue indefinitely.
Anyone wishing to contribute sleepwear is urged to call Dermody at 232-3796.
"It's a terrible thought to say that we have soldiers being injured," she said.
"But it's a fact of life right now and we need to take care of them."

Holy Mother of Pearl. No, It's difficult to find a hungry child that would gladly take food that you raised money for - instead of wasting your time trying to cover a soldier's rear-end with a set of used pajamas.
People, we need to wake up. This is one of the most ridiculous causes I have ever seen.

There are no used pj's being sent over.
As far as the rest you said .... I pray that your life becomes less stressful.

I think it's great that this group has collected PJ's for our GIs!
These folks have done something caring and thoughtful, and our GI's love gettting presents from home and knowing that they are in the thoughts and prayers of so many.
Anyone that would have a problem with this act of kindness must also be "heartless".

heartless? No, realistic.
There are people STARVING in Tulsa. Right here. In our town. And what do they decide to do? Use the time, effort and expenses that could help end this situation in order to send pajamas overseas for our soldiers to hide their rear ends. That's my point.

godless - I have an idea! Why don't YOU organize a drive to raise money to feed hungry children?
That way, you can address a cause that's important to YOU, and other people can address causes that are important to THEM!
I guess they didn't know they were supposed to get your approval before they put their time, effort, and money into helping others.
You don't want to be critical of others while you sit on your can and do nothing, do you? Better get going!

To godless: Well, we could do both, dontcha think?
One time my favorite uncle (75 yrs old) was in the hospital for quite an extended stay. I bought a new pair of pjs for him and added some little sew-on Disney characters on various parts of them. He, the nurses and doctors enjoyed some laughs about them, especially Goofy on the rear-end.
I think something like this would really cheer up the soldiers. Send them OU or OSU jammie bottoms. The designs and selections of all kinds are endless in the stores now.
Then, take a box of goodies down to the Food Bank for the locals.

I will have you know that since I live in America, I have the freedom to choose HOW I want to spend my money. So yesterday, I choose to go into Walmart and purchase pajama bottoms & t-shirts to send to injured men & women who are trying to protect & create that same right for humans in another country all the while preserving your right to your opinion and my right to shop. It is ridiculous to me that your rights and opionions are supposed to trump mine. However, as far as the hungry children go, put your money where your mouth is and support that cause. I did yesterday when I made my purchase. What ever happened to Freedom of Choice? God Bless the USA!

The homeless? Just an example. But just so you know? I have spent my entire career helping those in need, and volunteer many man hours to causes for the community as well. So yes, I DO just that.
And people don't have to get my approval - although I am free to ridicule their straw efforts in helping out absolutely nothing in this world.
A free country? You bet. It's also a free country that I live in, and I am also free to voice my own opinion about how ludicrous others are.

I'll bet the GIs that get the jammies don't see this as a straw effort.
Fortunately, your opinion doesn't keep people from doing something nice for them. In fact, I think I'll donate a set, in your honor.

For God sakes Godless - get a life! There are many good and diverse causes being taken on by many good and diverse people. Thank God for that! And thank God for all of the soldiers who for decades have shed blood sweat and tears so that you have a right to speak your narrow minded opinion, and be a Godless person.

no, I don't agree, stratolifter. This is exactly the kind of useless cause that irritates me the most - something that does absolutely nothing for anyone - except for someone else to say, "why, isn't that cute." If we all learned how to better spend our time in helping others - instead of just making things more convenient for some - the world would be a much better place to be.
And as for my narrow minded opinion, and those who shed their blood so that I might have that right - I shed my own, thanks.

I’m a 21 year veteran currently serving in Iraq and on behalf of my wounded brothers thank you for the PJs!!!!! Please remember the professional soldier will go out of their way to help others in need and we do not turn around and point at our chest and say look at what I’m doing or have done it is a profession of selfless service! So yes the small things help!!! Thank you and keep up the good work America!

I agree with godless. One of the reasons that our men and women are fighting is to preserve our freedom of speech. We should be able to express our opinions on issues without being attacked by others for doing so.
With that in mind, in my opinion....godless, you are an idiot. There...freedom of speech in action!

godless, I am trying to teach my children to be servers of our church, our community, our country and the world inwhich we live. Some of the same youth that you are belittling with your "ridiculous" verbage collected over 6,000 rolls of toilet paper this spring for the Community Resource Center of Owasso. You cannot get much more basic than that, can you not agree? Unlike you, we do not have a career to dedicate to service, we do it because of our love and compassion for other human beings and on our free time. Humans who deserve to have their rears covered by a pair of shorts or pants in the winter. I do not see how something so basic can be deamed cute. ARMYMAN, your response is why I will donate MORE the nexttime I hear of a drop off point!Hurray for our patriots!

mommie22 - I never commented on their toilet paper drive - I commented on their ridiculous pajama party. In addition, check back on my earlier post and you will see that I have spent countless hours on my own time doing everything from manning the soup kitchens to building homes for the needy.
I don't need to justify myself to you, in all fairness. This story pretty much speaks for itself.

My goodness ~ I think that you Godless have succeeded in providing more action from others than you can possibly imagine. Its like this ~ you may think that what we are doing is lame. The thing is that we are doing not sitting and commenting on how things could be so much better.
The day of the drive we had some young men drive by and scream out their windows horrible things. All it did is strengthen our resolve.
Yes you are entitled to your opinion. Soldiers like my Grandpa made it so that your speech is english not german. Men like my Dad, my uncles and my brother and my cousins both male and female have in the past and some continue today to place their lives on the line so that people like you can have the right to verbally bash them on every turn.
Aren't you glad you live in the USA where you have that freedom instead of China, Turkey, Iran, Nigeria, Korea, Indonesia, and a host of other nations where if you voiced some of your ideals would land you in prison.
Keep speaking Godless. You only ad fuel the the fire that continues to drive us in our endevor. Not only that but that fuel is being spread to others who read and disagree with your attitude.
I pray that God will Bless your heart as you continue in your passion to help the poor and hungry. Keep up the good work and maybe you might find peace.

Oh, I have peace, melo. I found it as soon as I laid to rest my fears of "big bad satan" - and began living my life as a happy, content individual. I only wish for those who still cling to the crutch of religion to cast off their dependency and see the world as it is - a wonderful, beautiful place that we can all enjoy - Without the fear of punishment from some mystical man who lives in the sky.
My attitude is fueled by acts such as this - useless acts of random nothing that provides no real relief at all.
And yes, I love that I live in the USA - it's why I am proud to have served my country. I did my part to make sure that I can voice my own opinion, and not have others cram their ancestor's service down my throat as some degrading, sarcastic, thinly-veiled insult to my own personal views.

Huh...I knew that the TW was a left leaning rag, but I am surprised that they decided to remove the last few comments that godless and I had. Though we were taking shots at each other, I hardly feel that it got "out of hand". Apparently the media demands freedom of the press, but is well practiced in the art of censorship.

I actually personally know both of the Hinds, so I have to admit that I didn't really appreciate such a callous attack on an act of kindness for wounded warriors. God Bless You!
