Inhofe: EPA too powerful, could damage economy

WASHINGTON — While others criticized the Bush administration's inaction on greenhouse gases, U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe warned Friday that it has put in place a scenario that will bankrupt the U.S. economy.

A key player in the years-long debate over climate change, the Oklahoma Republican agreed that using the Clean Air Act to put new regulations in place would be an unprecedented expansion of the Environmental Protection Agency's authority that would impact every household.

"Obviously the concept of regulating carbon dioxide under the Clean Air Act is flawed and the act must be amended by Congress," Inhofe said.

"Today's notice should concern all lawmakers; no one should want the EPA to exercise the kind of power and authority that the career staff at EPA contemplates."

Last month, he said, the Senate rejected a "cap-and-trade" proposal that would allow companies to buy or sell allowances depending on their level of pollution.

"It is ironic that the EPA has proposed an even more economically destructive scheme this close to that bill's demise," Inhofe said.

"If Congress does not act, then the resulting regulations could be the largest regulatory intrusion into Americans' personal lives, a nightmare scenario.

"Big Brother is alive and well in the career ranks at the EPA."

Inhofe's strong comments came after the administration's decision that it would not regulate greenhouse gases despite a Supreme Court ruling that the government was authorized to
do so under the Clean Air Act.

What specifically drew Inhofe's concern was the EPA's Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking soliciting public input.

Key Democrats also criticized the administration but for not moving forward with a plan.

"The Bush administration decision today to effectively reject regulation of global warming pollution under the Clean Air Act creates a clear and present danger to the American people," Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., said.

"Despite the Supreme Court's finding that EPA was ducking its responsibility under the law to control global warming emissions, the Bush administration continues to block all action."

Boxer is chairman of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, and Inhofe serves as that panel's top Republican.

The EPA is a joke, and all their jokers are hypocrites. Most of the agencies in Washington are unconstitutional and certainly unnecessary.

The EPA is charged with making regulations to protect the environment. With the oil industry in charge, however, what we get is precisely the opposite. Now the EPA protects oil interests instead.

Government of, by and for the corporations -- it's the GOP way. I don't want more of the McSame. I'll vote against Inhofe as well.

EPA is filled with anti-capitalist people who will stop at nothing to hurt our economy.
Sure pollution needs some controls. However it would be very easy to overstep.
All these people who on one hand love and breathe Al Gore and the EPA want more and tough standards. Then next complain about high energy prices, food prices. And end up out of work and can't pay a mortgage then look for the government to bail them out. Oh and blame Bush and republicans for all the mess. When they just really need to look in the Ol mirror.

These companies don't want to spend the money. They would rather keep polluting the air until we can't breathe.

I bet they make to lot of contributions to this idiot, Inhofe, to forsake his constituents' health and safety for their greedy interests.

The EPA non elected, is just one of the federal agency's that has too much power, the Congress will not jerk these agency's back, we could sure save a bunch of money by cutting off funds to these guys.Oh we dont need to eliminate the whole bunch, but the two guys left working would be to busy answering the phone to get out a do any more real damage.

Mr. Inhofe is a nice man, but his views on climate change strongly suggest he has oil company backers.
My question is--if we don't do anything NOW, will my children be able to live in this city in 20 years?
Tulsa's air quality is BAD now.
Look at our city from a distance most days, and you'll see what I mean!

The EPA has too much power. They've created so many rules and regulations that it's nearly impossible to build a power plant or water treatment facility. They've driven up the costs to develop these types of facilities forcing all taxpers to shoulder the additional burden. I do believe that the EPA has an important role in helping to protect the environment but they're out of control. The EPA and the Liberal Democrats won't be happy until they're running every aspect of our lives. They use fear to convince the American people that we're not capable of managing our own lives. They want you to believe that we need another Governmental program to take care of us. Again, the taxpayers will be called upon to fund these programs.

It is sad that there are opportunists that use "preservation of the earth" to destroy our world and hurt others via control. That is fueled by the ego. The ego loves either being grand or a victim. There are many things in our society that in the name of victimization individuals are given permission to victimize those that disagree with them. How crazy! People become irrational and religious for their cause. Eventually, an inquisition is brought in.

EPA, FAA, IRS, OSHA, the list goes on and on of governmental agencies that can operate almost unchecked by any means. THe Faa can actually redefine expressions DURING a court proceeding and the presiding judge can do nothing! Changing the laws on the fly so to speak. We need to develope a system of checks and balances for agencies which were not in existance during the penning of the constitution. THAT would be one step closer to a better democracy.

EXACTLY !!! Enough Regulation already , We need science to enhance our lives not regulate it !!!!! ....

We need to show our strength as there are many people who are fed up with environmental extremists controlling our lives.

We SUPPORT the Senators stand on the environment in relation to the extreme regulation of carbon dioxide under the Clean Air Act . The science is flawed and the act must be amended by Congress.

It's always the same, the purveyors of man made global warming, refuse to belief that THEY could be wrong. Recently 31000 respected scientists, of which 9072 were PHD's, drafted a statement that said MMGW was a bunch of hooey. It is estimated that $31 trillion would be needed to follow fully the guidelines set by the purveyors. This would effectively bankrupt the West. All the while, China and India could continue to industrialize and would not be required to adhere to these guidelines. It would seem that these purveyors of MMGW are not really interested in the environment, but instead wish to end Western Civilization. When communism was defeated in the 80's, communists found a comfortable home in the environmental movement.

If Barbara Boxer is for it, it will be backed by the left wing liberal wacko's. I have had the displeasure to speak with her. Very strange lady!! If it were up to her and the EPA, the only thing living on this planet would be animals and trees. I would love to see some of these "owl kissing tree huggers" move to and island of their own. Within a few decades, they would be extinct, but the frogs and crickets would be in great shape. If you want to find out some true information concerning global warming, look up some info from Dr. John Coleman he is the meterologist that started the Weather Channel. Our weather runs in cycles, look it up, stop listening to the likes of Al Gore who are making money off scareing the population of the world.

Here's some homework for you.Check out what is inside catalytic converters and where it comes from. Don't tell me about freon, I have a universal EPA certification to handle freon and having been through all the learning about the "hole" do not believe all the garbage. It's been said that many of the signers of the statement that called MMGW a bunch of hooey, were actually dead. Yes, out of 31000, 3 were found to be at room temperature. And the notion that many were included without their knowledge. How many is "many" because as of today, 7/12, the Rocky Mountain News had not found even one that was on the list, without their knowledge. If MMGW is a foregone conclusion and is irrefutable, then why won't Algore debate John Colemen?

I now understand why a "hick" town like OKC is making Tulsa look like the mentally challenged younger sibling of a Beverly Hillbillies reject.

God help this country when so many people buy into this global warming hoax. Cant you people think for yourself and see that its just the democrats/socialists way of ridding our country of capitalism? My 11 year old can see thru this bogus theory, then again....she doesnt go to government schools. People guard your kids, watch everything they learn in school and tell them the truth. Our country depends on it.

If all you young socialist whippersnappers would study math instead of whining and feeling sorry for yourselves, maybe one of you could invent a Luke-Skywalker-type anti-gravity speeder (a true "all terrain" vehicle) before I get too old to enjoy a ride in it! Forget Algore and all his fear mongering fans, friends, colleagues and apologists: an anti-gravity speeder is what I want to spend my money on!
Also, if you want to get rich, revolutionize the storage of electricity — let's say 100 times the electric energy of a high quality car battery in something the size of a cell phone. (No, McCain didn't think of better batteries first; I don't like him, and won't be voting for either him or the incompetent Pied-Piper socialist "Change Clown").

CO2 is NOT a pollutant, it is plant food. The more that's produced, the more plants will grow and the more CO2 they will consume.

This CO2 nonsense is the "reason" for what will be the biggest power grab by government in the history of the known universe. We will have government insinuating itself into every aspect of our lives and we will never be able to get them out.

Wake up, people!! There are literally THOUSANDS of scientists who KNOW this is nonsense, but they aren't being heard. Look up petitionproject dot org and read the names of the 31,000 + scientists who KNOW this is a scam. Included in that list are nobel prize winners and people like Dr. Reid Bryson, commonly described as "the Father" of the science of climatology.

The price of liberty is eternal vigilence. These eco-freaks want only to control us. This whole "climate change" farce (didn't it used to be "global warming"???) are using fake science to try to run our lives.

Dear "Mr. Lightning":
Just a parting exhortation.
The ancient wisdom of Exodus 20:14 says "Thou shalt not steal."
In a saner time, when American culture was FAR less illiterate, socialistic, nihilistic and amoral, the U.S. Supreme Court said, "To lay with one hand the power of the government on the property of the citizen, and with the other to bestow it upon favored individuals to aid private enterprises and build up private fortunes, is none the less a robbery because it is done under the forms of law and is called taxation." See Citizens’ Savings & Loan Ass’n v. City of Topeka, 87 U.S. 655 (1874). See also Calder v Bull, 3 U.S. (3 Dallas) 386 (1798), where the Supreme Court said, "A law that punished a citizen for an innocent action, or, in other words, for an act, which, when done, was in violation of no existing law; a law that destroys, or impairs, the lawful private contracts of citizens; a law that makes a man a Judge in his own cause; or a law that takes property from A. and gives it to B: It is against all reason and justice, for a people to entrust a Legislature with SUCH powers; and, therefore, it cannot be presumed that they have done it."
By definition, socialists use "government" coercion to take property and labor from A, put most of it in their own pockets, and give the rest to B. Therefore, by definition, socialists are anti-individual-freedom, anti-Golden-Rule, coercion-loving, nihilistic, amoral evil spirits. Therefore, even though I live as "green" as I can on my 2 1/2-acre sustainable "farm", I have no interest in their wannabe-clever talking points, including money-based "global warming".

Is Inhofe planning to use the continued existence of the EPA as a scapegoat for $4 gas, the bankrupting of the mortgage sector, and the economy generally nosediving? I read a story in the TW a few weeks ago about how the North Pole will probably be completely melted by the end of this summer. Inhofe is an original colonist of La La Land.

I am amazed at how little some people on this post know about the issue. Carbon dioxide is not something that can be seen or smelled, it's plant food. It makes up 0.03% of our atmosphere, yet we have people on this blog talking about it like it is smog. It is a naked grab for power by government as everything we do, including just living (breathing) produces carbon dioxide. Regulating carbon dioxide as a pollutant is unjustifiable and opens the door to tax business into oblivion, as well as create ridiculous scenarios like taxing babies being born, farmers that raise animals like cows, pigs, etc...As for bankruptcy, such power, especially in the hands of the United Nations would result in a decrease in wealth in this country that would be staggering, on AN IRREVERSIBLE SCALE, that our generations of great grandkids would curse our generation forever for ruining their prospect of a life as ours currently exits. Wake up people and quit drinking the Kool Aid....still no sunspots in cycle 24...perhaps we should be more concerned about global cooling...what an irony if that happens....what a stupid generation we would turn out to be in the eyes of history

We need more voices like Inhofe and Coburn.

Inhofe and Coburn are not the cause of the mess we are in, they are not members of the party that has been in charge of Congress the majority of time that I can remember, which is more than forty years.
