Inhofe: EPA too powerful, could damage economy
By JIM MYERS World Washington Bureau
Published:

Last Modified: 7/12/2008 2:12 AM
WASHINGTON — While others criticized the Bush administration's inaction on greenhouse gases, U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe warned Friday that it has put in place a scenario that will bankrupt the U.S. economy.
A key player in the years-long debate over climate change, the Oklahoma Republican agreed that using the Clean Air Act to put new regulations in place would be an unprecedented expansion of the Environmental Protection Agency's authority that would impact every household.
"Obviously the concept of regulating carbon dioxide under the Clean Air Act is flawed and the act must be amended by Congress," Inhofe said.
"Today's notice should concern all lawmakers; no one should want the EPA to exercise the kind of power and authority that the career staff at EPA contemplates."
Last month, he said, the Senate rejected a "cap-and-trade" proposal that would allow companies to buy or sell allowances depending on their level of pollution.
"It is ironic that the EPA has proposed an even more economically destructive scheme this close to that bill's demise," Inhofe said.
"If Congress does not act, then the resulting regulations could be the largest regulatory intrusion into Americans' personal lives, a nightmare scenario.
"Big Brother is alive and well in the career ranks at the EPA."
Inhofe's strong comments came after the administration's decision that it would not regulate greenhouse gases despite a Supreme Court ruling that the government was authorized to do so under the Clean Air Act.
What specifically drew Inhofe's concern was the EPA's Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking soliciting public input.
Key Democrats also criticized the administration but for not moving forward with a plan.
"The Bush administration decision today to effectively reject regulation of global warming pollution under the Clean Air Act creates a clear and present danger to the American people," Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., said.
"Despite the Supreme Court's finding that EPA was ducking its responsibility under the law to control global warming emissions, the Bush administration continues to block all action."
Boxer is chairman of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, and Inhofe serves as that panel's top Republican.

Mr. Inhofe is a nice man, but his views on climate change strongly suggest he has oil company backers.
My question is--if we don't do anything NOW, will my children be able to live in this city in 20 years?
Tulsa's air quality is BAD now.
Look at our city from a distance most days, and you'll see what I mean!

The EPA non elected, is just one of the federal agency's that has too much power, the Congress will not jerk these agency's back, we could sure save a bunch of money by cutting off funds to these guys.Oh we dont need to eliminate the whole bunch, but the two guys left working would be to busy answering the phone to get out a do any more real damage.

These companies don't want to spend the money. They would rather keep polluting the air until we can't breathe.
I bet they make to lot of contributions to this idiot, Inhofe, to forsake his constituents' health and safety for their greedy interests.

EPA is filled with anti-capitalist people who will stop at nothing to hurt our economy.
Sure pollution needs some controls. However it would be very easy to overstep.
All these people who on one hand love and breathe Al Gore and the EPA want more and tough standards. Then next complain about high energy prices, food prices. And end up out of work and can't pay a mortgage then look for the government to bail them out. Oh and blame Bush and republicans for all the mess. When they just really need to look in the Ol mirror.

The EPA is a joke, and all their jokers are hypocrites. Most of the agencies in Washington are unconstitutional and certainly unnecessary.

The EPA is charged with making regulations to protect the environment. With the oil industry in charge, however, what we get is precisely the opposite. Now the EPA protects oil interests instead.
Government of, by and for the corporations -- it's the GOP way. I don't want more of the McSame. I'll vote against Inhofe as well.

Inhofe (and Coburn) are embarrassments to Oklahoma.
Unfortunately, Alden is probably correct. Inhofe probably speaks for the majority of his constituents. We tend to get the kind of government that we deserve.

We need more voices like Inhofe and Coburn.
Inhofe and Coburn are not the cause of the mess we are in, they are not members of the party that has been in charge of Congress the majority of time that I can remember, which is more than forty years.

Is Inhofe planning to use the continued existence of the EPA as a scapegoat for $4 gas, the bankrupting of the mortgage sector, and the economy generally nosediving? I read a story in the TW a few weeks ago about how the North Pole will probably be completely melted by the end of this summer. Inhofe is an original colonist of La La Land.

CO2 is NOT a pollutant, it is plant food. The more that's produced, the more plants will grow and the more CO2 they will consume.
This CO2 nonsense is the "reason" for what will be the biggest power grab by government in the history of the known universe. We will have government insinuating itself into every aspect of our lives and we will never be able to get them out.
Wake up, people!! There are literally THOUSANDS of scientists who KNOW this is nonsense, but they aren't being heard. Look up petitionproject dot org and read the names of the 31,000 + scientists who KNOW this is a scam. Included in that list are nobel prize winners and people like Dr. Reid Bryson, commonly described as "the Father" of the science of climatology.
The price of liberty is eternal vigilence. These eco-freaks want only to control us. This whole "climate change" farce (didn't it used to be "global warming"???) are using fake science to try to run our lives.

Here's some homework for you.Check out what is inside catalytic converters and where it comes from. If Barbara Boxer is for it, it will be backed by the left wing liberal wacko's. I have had the displeasure to speak with her. Very strange lady!! If it were up to her and the EPA, the only thing living on this planet would be animals and trees. I would love to see some of these "owl kissing tree huggers" move to and island of their own. Within a few decades, they would be extinct, but the frogs and crickets would be in great shape. If you want to find out some true information concerning global warming, look up some info from Dr. John Coleman he is the meterologist that started the Weather Channel. Our weather runs in cycles, look it up, stop listening to the likes of Al Gore who are making money off scareing the population of the world.

EXACTLY !!! Enough Regulation already , We need science to enhance our lives not regulate it !!!!! ....
We need to show our strength as there are many people who are fed up with environmental extremists controlling our lives.
We SUPPORT the Senators stand on the environment in relation to the extreme regulation of carbon dioxide under the Clean Air Act . The science is flawed and the act must be amended by Congress.

The EPA has too much power. They've created so many rules and regulations that it's nearly impossible to build a power plant or water treatment facility. They've driven up the costs to develop these types of facilities forcing all taxpers to shoulder the additional burden. I do believe that the EPA has an important role in helping to protect the environment but they're out of control. The EPA and the Liberal Democrats won't be happy until they're running every aspect of our lives. They use fear to convince the American people that we're not capable of managing our own lives. They want you to believe that we need another Governmental program to take care of us. Again, the taxpayers will be called upon to fund these programs.

The planet has not warmed since 1998. The planet cooled between 1940 and 1970. During both those periods CO2 increased dramatically. In the geologic record, CO2 has been SIGNIFICANTLY higher than it is today. There were no SUVs then and No Tipping point. There is no tipping point now. Historically CO2 trails temperature by 200 to 800 years.
Man Made Global Warming occurs only in computer models. There is no hard evidence that CO2 makes more than a trivial contribution to global warming. There are only claims with no science to back them up. Yellow Dog, find me a fact, not a claim that backs up positive feedbacks and tipping points.
I respectfully submit that you should do your homework. Read the material from both sides, not just the people you agree with. Fred Singer and Roy Spencer are both noted climate scientists who stand in opposition to your position. 31,000 is a large number of scientists who know nonsense when they see it. Only a handful of scientists actually participated in the IPCC report and all of their criticisms of the final report were ignored.
Far more money is available to scientists who support AGW than oppose it. Hansen has received MILLIONS from left wing groups. Hansen, within the last week refused an invitation to debate. The oil companies fund very little research on global warming. Al Gore is awash in money. Gore and Hansen admit that they exaggerate (lie) to make their points. (Their words, not mine.) They claim that the result justifies any behavior. No one would care if they did not predict catastrophe.
I want to do my homework, please direct me to the site that contains a real debate between two actual climate scientists on each side of this controversy. I believe that your guys just hang back, claim that the debate is over, and claim a near complete consensus of scientists. I would like to see the interchanges where points were made and rebutted.

I, for one, have stopped all political and environmental action donations and eco-media purchases. This includes Mother Earth News after 35 years as a faithful subscriber. Why pay for relentless, mind numbing Climate Change propaganda. We receive plenty from the media for free. I have asked all these outright liars and hucksters to take me out of their databases permanently.
We need to put the whole Climate Change issue into perspective vis-a-vis the Peak Oil Crisis. Everyone needs to ask themselves, their associates, all sitting elected officials and those seeking office, especially the office of President of the United States, "What is more threatening in both the long and short terms, a beneficial 1 degree F rise in average world temperatures over the past 100 years, or a 1 percent decline in world oil production over the last 100 weeks - with steepening declines forecast? Furthermore, can our economy better deal with declining fuel inventories in an environment of persistent warming, or in an environment of declining average temperatures over the next several decades, the most likely scenario given the highly reliable solar inertial motion (SIM) model forecasts of climate change?” Solar cycle # 24 will tell the tale. The problem is not AGW. The real problem is the end of cyclical warming coincident with the onset of Peak Oil. And, the critical question is who has provided Al Gore with $300,000,000 to convince all of us that we are personally responsible for Global Warming. Someone is expecting a big payoff. Perhaps it’s the chicagoclimatex.
Finally, are the holes in the polar ozone really caused by CFC’s, the most recent cap&trade gold mine, or are holes in polar ozone the natural result of unusually high solar activity over the past few decades? The facts are astounding and point to the underlying fraud of Anthropogenic CO2 Global Warming, the next planned cap&trade gold mine. What will become the next evil life sustaining substance to be capped & traded at great cost to you me, oxygen? In the months and years ahead, do not be surprised to find the polar ozone miraculously healing itself and global temperatures moderating as the effects of the sun’s current quiet cycle take hold. It is interesting to note that NASA has known the underlying physical reality for quite some time, as clearly explained in a number of their papers.

It is sad that there are opportunists that use "preservation of the earth" to destroy our world and hurt others via control. That is fueled by the ego. The ego loves either being grand or a victim. There are many things in our society that in the name of victimization individuals are given permission to victimize those that disagree with them. How crazy! People become irrational and religious for their cause. Eventually, an inquisition is brought in.

EPA, FAA, IRS, OSHA, the list goes on and on of governmental agencies that can operate almost unchecked by any means. THe Faa can actually redefine expressions DURING a court proceeding and the presiding judge can do nothing! Changing the laws on the fly so to speak. We need to develope a system of checks and balances for agencies which were not in existance during the penning of the constitution. THAT would be one step closer to a better democracy.

It's always the same, the purveyors of man made global warming, refuse to belief that THEY could be wrong. Recently 31000 respected scientists, of which 9072 were PHD's, drafted a statement that said MMGW was a bunch of hooey. It is estimated that $31 trillion would be needed to follow fully the guidelines set by the purveyors. This would effectively bankrupt the West. All the while, China and India could continue to industrialize and would not be required to adhere to these guidelines. It would seem that these purveyors of MMGW are not really interested in the environment, but instead wish to end Western Civilization. When communism was defeated in the 80's, communists found a comfortable home in the environmental movement.

I never cease to be amazed at the economics-related incompetence of libs.
The empirically observable FACT that Nature is a cause-and-effect, survival-of-the-fittest place does not depend on human opinion for its existence, power, or gravitational ramifications.
Whatever you tax you WILL get less of; whatever you subsidize you WILL get more of.
Humans haven't been doing all that well, so obviously there are too many slow learners. Accordingly, it's not going to bum me out if CO2 increases and plants thrive while humans diminish for awhile.
OF COURSE "global warming" is a manipulative scam. But I don't object to it too much, so long as Algore and his scamming police-power coercion-loving ilk don't make ONE RED CENT off of it. Implementing Nature's laws of economics, take the money out of it and see how long the "global warming" and "climate change" fear mongering last. Not very long, I'll bet!
Like it or not, Nature itself is per se a "free market", therefore, I say to all you fear-mongering "Chicken-Little" liberals: get over your emotional problems, your failures in life, your self-pitying "victimology" philosophy, and your economics-challenged intellectual incompetence, acquire some skills, take a risk, and jump into the free marketplace, and actually produce a product that is useful to humans, and see what happens. I used to be a "liberal" whiner, too, before I grew a brain. So you can't fool me. Carpe diem, for crying out loud! Life is more exciting than ANY individual-freedom-hating socialist will EVER know.
At the very least, you won't be mindlessly referring to such decent people as Jim Inhofe as "idiots".

It's been said that many of the signers of the statement that called MMGW a bunch of hooey, were actually dead. Yes, out of 31000, 3 were found to be at room temperature. And the notion that many were included without their knowledge. How many is "many" because as of today, 7/12, the Rocky Mountain News had not found even one that was on the list, without their knowledge. If MMGW is a foregone conclusion and is irrefutable, then why won't Algore debate John Colemen?
