Don't fear downtown: Do Dfest!

This Friday and Saturday, downtown Tulsa is going to come alive with artists like The All-American Rejects and The Roots at Dfest.

Most teens are proud of themselves when they're actually able to make it to the Cain's Ballroom. Most of us are downright puzzled by the maze of one-way streets, weird on-the-side traffic lights and 20 mph speed limits that downtown offers.

That's why the students of Satellite, who have to meet downtown every week at the Tulsa World, have put together this handy user's guide to Dfest. Consider it your pass to getting around downtown, where the only thing you have to fear is fear itself.

And possibly picking the right expressway exit.

Must-see bands:

The All American Rejects, because: They're from Stillwater, you don't recognize any of the other bands, and just because you're not obsessed with them anymore, you're not too proud to see one of your favorite bands from middle school live. Plus, you need to check to make sure Tyson is still hot.

Midnight-1:40 a.m. Saturday, Hadaly Stage (S1)

Paramore , because: They sound a lot like Flyleaf.

10:30-11:45 p.m. Friday, Hadaly (S1).

Apples in Stereo, because: They've gotten pretty great reviews lately by the indie blogs.

Beginning at 11 p.m. Friday at The Blank Slate (S2).

Phantom Planet, because: They do "The O.C." theme song, "California" —
perfect indie rock for those who like OK Go and Franz Ferdinand.

9-10:15 p.m. Friday, Hadaly (S1).

Edison Glass, because: Many of them went to Oral Roberts University. An alt-rock, techno-pop vibe (think Bloc Party plus Muse).

8-8:40 p.m. Friday, Hadaly (S1).

The Starkweather Boys, because: They're sure to draw out Tulsa's retro-loving rockabilly locals — and the band itself is local!

11-11:40 p.m. Friday at 1974 (S11).

The Stock Market Crash, because: They rocked out DFest last year. More indie-rock, similar to The Bravery and The Killers.

1-1:40 a.m. Saturday (feels like late Friday!), The Blank Slate (S6).

We're also recommending: The Roots midnight-1:40 a.m. Sunday (feels like Saturday), Hadaly; Zappa Plays Zappa 10:30-11:45 p.m. Saturday, Hadaly; moe.

9-10:15 p.m. Friday, R.U.R. Stage (S2); Helmet 10:30-11:45 p.m. Saturday, R.U.R.; and Clutch, midnight-1:40 a.m. Sunday (ala Saturday), R.U.R.

And don't miss Satellite Battle of the Bands favorites,

The Twenties, 7-7:40 p.m. Friday, Oklahoma Stage (S10).

Best way to convince your parents downtown is safe:

"The bicycle cops will help me if something happens."

What about all those 'tween scenesters who go to the Cain's? Nothing ever happens to them, right?

"I'll take my Safety-Cat, a piece of metal shaped like a cat's head and made to stab some stalker in the eyes, or kidneys, or wherever."

"I watch 'Law and Order: SVU' all the time, so I know all the major pedophiles are in New York City, not downtown Tulsa. Plus, I have faith in the Tulsa Police Department. And if you can't trust TPD, who can you trust?"

"Oh, you're talking about that jail downtown? It's really no big deal; nothing's in it. The jail is just for show." (Note: requires lots of enthusiastic nodding)

Or: Not only is it safe, it's where the jail is conveniently located. On the off chance you get arrested, your parents won't have to drive all the way to the other side of town to bail you out — they can just bail you out when they're supposed to be picking you up! That's a big gas saver, and they could use that gas money as bail money. (We're kidding, of course!)

Best excuses for staying out late to see the bands:

"I can't help it — being a groupie is my true calling!"

It's a sponsored event — totally curfew-proof! Plus, it's a great opportunity to expand your musical education.

"There was so much traffic and there was an accident and so everyone got home late, not just me!"

What to tell the cop who pulls you over for breaking curfew because you just HAD to stay past midnight to see the Rejects:

"I'm leaving a church affair."

"You know, Officer, you make that uniform look great."

"Let's be honest. You did way worse things in your youth." (To be paired with a convincing eyebrow raise.)

"The historic art deco in downtown Tulsa was too irresistible! I mean, how often do I get to come down here and witness the architecture of these magnificent buildings?"

Or maybe you're already on a first-name basis with the police, so you can catch up on old times.
