Fire Department given medical honor

SAND SPRINGS — The Sand Springs Fire Department has received the Emergency Medical Response Agency of the Year award from the Oklahoma Emergency Medical Technicians Association.

The award recognizes a three-year strategic goal to improve the department's emergency medical response services to the community, Fire Chief Mark Joslin said.

The result, he said, is a better capability to save lives in the critical moments after a serious injury or illness.

Working with EMSA ambulance personnel, the Fire Department has provided first response emergency medical services since the early 1990s.

In recent years, emergency medical calls have accounted for about two-thirds of the department's total call volume.

Last year, Sand Springs firefighters answered 1,961 medical calls.

Through an arrangement with Rogers State University, firefighters received 14 weeks of training in intermediate-level emergency medical technician training.

Classroom instruction was followed by clinical hours riding in ambulances and working in hospital emergency and operating rooms.

The Fire Department's emergency medical response area covers the city limits and about 50 square miles of rural area.

Residents help support the emergency medical response program through a monthly fee on utility bills. By Staff Reports
