Poll finds few state voters for Obama
By RANDY KREHBIEL World Staff Writer
Published:
8/3/2008 2:09 AM
Last Modified: 8/3/2008 3:51 AM
Oklahomans may not be excited about this year's presidential campaign, but most of them know who they're going to vote for.
And it's not Barack Obama.
The latest Oklahoma Poll, a statewide survey of 750 likely voters conducted July 19-23, found little support — and some outright hostility — for the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee.
Republican John McCain, meanwhile, attracted broad, if sometimes tepid, support to lead Obama by 32 percentage points, 56 percent to 24 percent.
Seventy-one percent said they are firm in their decisions.
"Oklahomans have their minds made up and they aren't going to change come hell or high water, no matter what," said poll consultant Al Soltow, vice president for research at the University of Tulsa.
A trend, noted in national polls, of a substantial core of dedicated supporters for Obama is not evident in the Oklahoma Poll.
"The enthusiasm that Obama has generated in other parts of the country is certainly not evident here," Soltow said.
In fact, enthusiasm for the campaign in general seems to be quite low.
Overall, 38 percent of those surveyed said they were more enthusiastic than usual about this year's elections. About 32 percent said this year's elections will make an important difference in the lives of themselves and their families.
Only those describing themselves as liberals indicated much excitement about this year's elections.
"That goes a long way
to explaining the low turnout in the primary," Soltow said, referring to elections last week in which fewer than 20 percent of Oklahoma's registered voters participated.
"I would rather have had somebody different than John McCain on the Republican side, but I can't even believe who the Democrats picked," said poll respondent Billy Garrison, a registered Democrat who often votes Republican.
"I know our country will be in bad shape if Barack Obama is elected president," said Garrison of Tulsa.
Another erstwhile Democrat, Charles Ogdon of Muldrow, said he believes Obama will be the next president, in part because Ogdon believes an Obama presidency would fit biblical prophesies concerning Armageddon and the Second Coming.
But Ogdon isn't happy about it.
"I know the news media give John McCain fits and are for Barack Obama, but tell me, what has Barack Obama done?" he said.
More than a quarter of those surveyed said they found nothing to like about Obama, compared with 14 percent who said the same thing about McCain. More than half the Democrats had a favorable opinion of McCain, compared with just one in five Republicans who said the same about Obama.
When asked what they most disliked about McCain, the No. 1 answer (at 20 percent) was "nothing."
Lack of experience was the most frequently listed shortcoming for Obama.
McCain's greatest liability, in fact, may be President Bush. Many of those supporting Obama said they were ready for a change of direction.
"Honestly, it amazed me when the Republicans began talking about putting George Bush on the ticket back in 1999," said Fred Weinecke, a former Republican who recently changed his registration to Democrat. "Most likely he's done more damage to the Republican Party than anybody ever. He's probably going to be the one who elects Barack Obama."
Harry Jackson said the 71-year-old McCain's age has "caught up with him."
"I think we need a younger man with some ideas to change things up a little," he said.
"I have confidence in (Obama's) judgment, in his ability to make good decisions," said Jackie Pizarro of Tulsa. "We've needed that for a long time."

Lack of experience is a plus. Experience in government is sort of like the way prisons make terrific criminals out of incompetent criminals. Brains, knowledge of geography and world governments, ability to speak, and honesty are the important attributes. Remember, Oklahoma voters supported the current President, twice. Oklahoma voters for Bush: you can be fooled. Don't vote your prejudices. Give competence a chance this time and vote for Obama.

If my math is correct, 20% of Oklahomans are saying they can't make up their minds between Obama and McCain. Even the irrational Obama-haters agree that the choice couldn't be clearer:
- a long-time Washington insider, well past his prime, who is a slow learner with not a single new idea, and who promises to follow every one of the policies of George W. Bush.
- a smart, energetic, charismatic young man with obvious leadership ability, not in the pockets of the lobbyists who have been running America for decades, and who promises to kick America out of the sorry rut we have been stuck in for the past eight years.
Oklahomans often show themselves to be frightened of the new and different, even when the old and familiar isn't working or is downright evil. Oklahoma's reaction to "Barak Hussein Obama" is Exhibit A.
Alden is confused, as usual. He thinks that Rich and Smart are the same thing. Alden, do you really need examples of why that ain't so?

This isn't surprising.
Most Americans, are a little right of center. Most Oklahomans are a little farther right of center. That's why Obama trails in Oklahoma, and also why Oklahomans are less than broadly enthusiastic about McCain. But in a race between a moderate and a liberal, the moderate will usually win in a statewide contest in Oklahoma.
That same pairing will very probably result in a narrow McCain victory among all Americans in November. This is foreshadowed by Obama's inability to open a commanding lead in national polling despite his personal appeal and McCain's arguably feckless campaigning.

Ya know , I wanted to send McCain an email to ask him about his involvement in the savings & loan scandal he was involved in. Or his infidelity while married. Or why he has over and over voted against support for our troops and is shunned by most if not all military groups. But since he is unable to operate a computer and simply wont talk about it, I guess that don't matter to most Oklahomans who think everything is just wonderful. I wonder how a loser is any better this time around? Fact is, hes not. Its been said that McCain of 2000 wouldn't even vote for this McCain of 2008.Talk about "flip flopping" The guy will say anything to any group whatever he thinks they want to hear. Fact is, a whole websites are devoted to his flagrant flops. My guess is many of those questioned don't know the facts, don't care, or cant see past his skin color to make a unbiased opinion.

Thanks you Graychin, IMO, Chase and A for expressing my feelings and thoughts. You have posted so well that I shall simply say "Go Oboma"
I have just finished reading "Dreams of my Father" and find that it is one of the most skillfully written book that I have read in a long time. I highly recommend this book. "The Audacity of Hope" is on my read list this week.

Unfortunately, at some point, more tax increases will have to be made to fund Social Security. It's not a Dem or Rep thing - just a financial one. The money will run out in a few more years. Tax increases are never popular tho & pols don't want to talk about Soc Sec for that reason.

If the "geniuses" in DC would stop their frivolous spending, they would not have to increase taxes. But NOOOO....they have to keep spending the money they borrow from China.
.
.
You want "change"...how about we fire the ones in DC we have now and get a whole new group?? Let those idiots in DC know that we don't like what they are doing and not afraid to fire them.....remember...we pay their salaries, they work for us.

I truly believe they have forgotten why they are there...

Sen. Barack Obama's assertion that "we could save all the oil that they're talking about getting off drilling, if everybody was just inflating their tires and getting regular tune-ups."
That's not accurate.
Such moves would save about 800,000 barrels a day, as opposed to the 1.25 million barrels a day from drilling off shore.
Still, that doesn't mean the idea to is to be mocked, as many Republicans seem to be doing right now.
Unless, of course, you think 800,000 barrels of oil a day is to be sneezed at.
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, "every pound per square inch of tire under inflation wastes 4 million gallons of gas daily in the U.S." Survey information from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows that 27% of the cars on the road have a significantly under-inflated tire.

if obama should win it'll have to be by a huge margin because the republicans know how to manipulate the polls in a close race. if mccain gets in it'll be 4-8 more years of bush because the same puppet strings will be attached by big oil & big bankers. time is short & every qualified person needs to register & vote. this election will decide the fate of our country.

Unless you make over $250,000 a year, your taxes will not go up under Obama. Period. Maybe Oklahomans can't understand this simple fact. I especially like FISH talking about Obama taking money from taxpayers and giving it to those who don't work. Under Bush, the top 1% richest taxpayers share of taxes has gone way down, while middle class taxes has gone up. Every policy of Bush's has the goal of making rich people richer. It's that simple. Enron, Exxon Mobile, Iraq war contracts, etc. Normal people getting screwed and the rich get richer. It's the theme of his administration. Considering most republicans don't make over $250,000 a year, and those few who do can afford it, I don't understand why anyone would vote republican. Liberals aren't going to take your guns, close your church and kill your babies. They will lower your taxes though. Republicans talk and talk and talk about how government is wasteful and an unnecessary intrusion in our lives, then get elected and prove it. Democrats, in general, actually think that the government can help if you want it. Republicans used to be the party of less spending but not so much any more. Sorry for the rant, it won't make much difference here I imagine. Lastly, let me just say I'm so glad I moved to Chicago from Tulsa, go Obama!!!

Out of the blue, without prior exposure, Obama enchants the world with bpromises of change and unity -- he's our savior, and people faint at his rallies, get great feelings just looking at the guy, and go head-over-heels without much prior thought. Ever read the Left Behind books?
Let's look at the facts: He doesn't want town hall debates, he's not very good at traditional debates, and he only excels where thousands of people in emotional rallies hear his touted rhetoric. He's dishonest and opportunistic -- he refuses to visit injured troops in Germany because cameras won't be able to come; he changes his stance from “ultra-liberal” to “pseudo-conservative” when the primaries end and he needs republican votes, and he breaks promises whenever it suits him, like when private donations came roaring in, prompting a sudden reversal of his heart-felt promise to uphold the public financing system. He's not just the same old politician; he’s that to the worst degree.
He's voted "present" more than any other senator and spent just ONE YEAR in the US Senate before running for president. And when he did vote, he had the most liberal voting record among a group that included Ted Kennedy. He's never proven he can change things, never worked with the other party, never made strides in congress. In fact, his policies are nearly identical to the failed policies of Jimmy Carter -- change we can believe in, is it?
He has only one qualification: Youthful charisma that gives him the ability to make grandiose heart-capturing speeches. His other qualification may be switching sides more often than any politician in recent times.
I applaud Oklahoma for realizing that Obama's rhetoric does not match his actions and for refusing to fall head over heels for this skilled master of deception. I applaud Oklahomans for appealing to logic and reason. -- not hype and rhetoric. And when you're done voting, go take a look at those Left Behind books. Pay attention to a character named Nicolae Carpathia.

How so?
elitist?
A charge made incredulous considering McCains upbringing and lifestyle and his wifes $100 million bank account.
he refuses to visit injured troops in Germany because cameras won't be able to come.
This has already been proven wrong over a week ago, and McCains campaign has apologized and stated the truth.
His other qualification may be switching sides more often than any politician in recent times.
Check the facts on McCain since 2000.
demagogue.
Thats is right out of the Rove scare tactic play book.
I see nowhere where you tout McCains positions, policy's,votes virtues. But I understand that facts mean little to you and others who simply see what the right wing zealots want you to see.

If you youtube "angry John Mc Cain" you will see him flying off the handle and using the F word when people are being polite to him and just asking questions. Mc Cain flys off the handle over questions... so I dont really think I would want him in charge of the BUTTON that could end the world. Many others that have served with Mc Cain for years wouldnt want him in charge of the BUTTON either.
I look forward to Obama and ability to bring change. In his short time in office he has already changed the way the world looks at politics. John Mc Cain has been in office most of his life and he hasnt done anything except be a part of the problem. I hope having a president like Obama, someone that isnt completely screwed up by politics, will be like a breath of fresh air.
A poll of 750 people is hardly a reliable grouping of citizens.
To me Mc Cain just looks evil when he laughs at his own petty jokes about Obama. Im sick of his kind. Mc Cain cant even remember what he is saying most of the time, yells at people that quote him right. I dont want to see people that are just doing their jobs getting berated by this man.
Mc Cains wife has 100 million sitting in her bank account... some how I dont see him helping the 99% of citizens that are making less than the weathly 1%, yet paying more in a percentage of taxes.
Mc Cain is Bush... excpet for his arms dont swing as high when hes talking. Are his suits just poorly fitted or is rigor mortise already starting to set in.

Thank goodness in the whole scheme of things Oklahoma wont matter much in the elections if people are so against Obama. More than likely there is a correlation between how many of our citizens watch wwf and how many people are against Obama. For these people Fox News is their only source of media because they run their sections in short time frames as to not go over the attention span level of its viewers.
We live in a state with so many problems, on so many levels that it is so over whelming that most of our citizens put their heads in the sand of denial... lovely Bible belt we live in. "Praise Jesus... were all saved". The home of Richard and Oral Roberts, and Oklahoma will defend them until they die.
After 8 years we cannot afford another Bush to drag us down further.

John McCain needs to crawl over to K street like his slimy lobby buddies. I am a life long Republican and I am for Obama. I don't care about a poll of a few people in this sorry State. These same people voted to elect that lame Lying George Bush and his Boss, not once but twice. Dumber than a brick ....the State as a whole, and the man completely.
I'm surprised they could get the chicken fried steak and gravy out of Bubba's mouth long enough to get him to answer their poll question at the diner.
