Intruder shot in Muskogee home robbery
By The Associated Press
Published:
8/28/2008 3:05 PM
Last Modified: 8/28/2008 4:14 PM
A Muskogee man was being treated Wednesday night at Muskogee Regional Medical Center for gunshot wounds he sustained during what appears to be a home invasion, police said.
Police Lt. Bert Poole said the investigation so far shows that Bernard Harlin, 36, was in the house at 1420 Fremont St., when Anthony Irving, 36, entered the residence.
Officers said Harlin lives in the Muskogee residence during the week and in Wagoner on weekends.
Poole said Irving came into the residence carrying a gun, which discharged as he scuffled with Harlin. It went off again, striking Irving.
Harlin then ran outside, yelling for a neighbor to call 911.
That neighbor was Lillian Harlin, who said she was standing in her backyard at the time. She said she did not hear the gunshots because her air conditioner was running.
She ran into her home and called for help and later saw the victim being removed from the house on a stretcher. She said she did not hear or see anything else. She also said she did not know her neighbor.
District Attorney Larry Moore said the evidence so far in the case indicates the homeowner was defending himself against an intruder.
Moore said he doesn't expect to file charges against the homeowner but will consider charges against the intruder.
According to Oklahoma Department of Corrections records, Irving has prior convictions for drug possession and distribution of drugs. His last conviction in Muskogee County was in 2006, when he received a suspended sentence for possession of a controlled dangerous substance.

"She also said she did not know her neighbor."
Odd that two neighbors with the last name of Harlin would not know each other...

The 4th paragraph refers to someone called "Irving," but never identifies the person.
Is this the intruder? … or someone else?
It's a poorly-written article.

Are we the only readers who observe how poorly written (and edited) this rag has become the last five years or so? The sports page is an abomination.

" Irving " must be a rapper, singer, or movie star!

now I'm not in any way shape of form trying to stand up for the tulsa world's writing abilities but read the second paragraph be4 you tell them how poorly they did because they didnt say who irvin is because you evidently did a poor job reading the article because it is in paragraph 2.

I know both of these guy's personally and this didn't go down like it's being said in the paper. I promise you, also the neighbor knows exactly who he is but don't won't to be connected because fear of revenge. And the article is just a copy of what I read from the muskogee newspaper. This happened yesterday around 11a.

Harry, here are some tips to help you in your future career as a Tulsa World proofreader:
Your waitress, not you're waitress.
Proofreader is one word, no hypen.
Tulsa is capitalized. So is October, which is spelled out unless paired with a specific date. So are words at the beginning of sentences.
Commas go in the following places: after hey, after Tulsa, after TW, after proofreader.
Good luck and happy proofreading!

How incredibly odd we never read stories about English teachers being shot in a struggle for a handgun. I'm almost certain several people reading these comments are wondering about the same thing.
Sure as shootin' though, paragraph 2 says "Anthony Irving, 36, entered the house." And paragraph 4 says "Irving came into the residence carrying a gun."
I'm no detective, but I do read an awful lot of police reports. I have to admit, its entirely possible that the AP writer simply transcribed the narrative from the officer's original offense report. Those reports can be difficult to read, because they not only have to tell the story, they also have to describe events in such a way as to satisfy the court a specific crime was committed. The good news is, the cops figured out who Irving is. That's good enough for me.
Oh, if you bring a gun into someone else's house, you better know how to use it and be willing to shoot someone, or else you're in big trouble, brother. I love a story with a moral at the end....
