The University of Tulsa will receive $2.5 million from the federal government to expand and improve its Institute for Information Security.

The funding comes from an appropriation in the National Defense Authorization Act and Defense Appropriations Act recently approved by the U.S. Congress.

U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe led the effort, and, in a statement from TU, called it a victory for the university and the city.

"Part of iSec's commitment is a dedicated effort to establish Tulsa as a hotbed for information security research and development," Inhofe stated. "By combining the strengths and talents of multiple academic departments across TU, iSec not only possesses the ability to look at all sides of a problem, but also develop practical solutions."

TU will use the money to develop a hardware and software testing complex that can evaluate the security of critical infrastructures. It also plans to develop a center for training law enforcement, government employees and military personal in security education, according to the release.

Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh has the CERT Coordination Center, created by DARPA in November 1988 after the Morris worm struck. It is a major coordination center in dealing with internet security problems. I guess TU's iSEC has a unique advantage, providing something CERT/CC does not?
