A Republican lawmaker's aide disseminates an anti-Obama e-mail via her state account.

OKLAHOMA CITY — An assistant to a Republican state representative was reprimanded Wednesday for sending out an anti-Obama e-mail after a black lawmaker said he was highly offended by the message, which was transmitted to all House legislative assistants.

Rep. Mike Shelton, D-Oklahoma City, said he found the e-mail "very offensive, racist and very inappropriate." He called for disciplinary action against the assistant.

Jane Mitchell, an assistant to Rep. Doug Cox, had used her state computer to send the e-mail containing what was labeled "a frightening knock-knock joke."

The initial panels read: "Knock knock. Who's there? Eyes. Eyes who?" In the final panel, a door opens to reveal a caricature of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's face with the caption, "Eyes yo new Prezident." When the door opens, a loud screech can be heard.

In her e-mail, Mitchell wrote: "I don't care if you are repubs or demos, I think that this e-mail that my daughter sent to me is funny."

However, Gracie Monson, a legislative assistant to Shelton, said she also was offended, and she told Shelton about the e-mail.

Cox, R-Grove, said he knew nothing about the e-mail. He said he immediately informed his assistant that it was inappropriate, and she apologized to Shelton's assistant, who is black.

"I've never heard my assistant utter anything of a racial nature, and
there is no hint that there is a racially oriented bone in her body," Cox said.

Mitchell also sent an apology to the estimated 40 full-time legislative assistants who serve the House. She wrote that she thought the e-mail was funny and had sent it "on a whim."

"Don't worry, I have been chastised," she wrote. "I have signed and dated an apology sent out from the head office, and I am sending an apology to all to whom I sent it."

Chad Warmington, the House chief of staff, said a written reprimand was placed in Mitchell's file. He said it appeared that Mitchell did not intend to offend anyone.

Warmington sent a memo to staff members warning that it had come to his attention that "an email of political nature has been sent on the House network which was offensive and upsetting."

His memo continued, "Further dissemination of emails of this type could result in immediate termination."

Warmington said he didn't think firing Mitchell was warranted.

"It was pretty clear she did not understand the nature of her e-mail and how it would be received," he said. "It wasn't blatant, and it wasn't malicious intent."

Shelton said he was comfortable with how the House handled the reprimand.

"This needed to be addressed, and I appreciate their swift action," he said. "I am not trying to make this bigger than it is."

After being reprimanded, Mitchell left work for the day and was not available for comment.

Jim I can tell you have no personality. We have people at my place of employment like that to. BORING..... All jokes are funny. I thought it was. If it was a joke about President Bush no one, not even the tulsa world would have even looked at it twice. Oh but since it was about oboma it is bad. Shame on america. Like I said our rights are already being taken away. Give it a year and just see what happens. This is just the beginning of this kind of bull.

Reprimanded for insulting the messiah. The things said about our current president have been for more malicious and ugly than this stupid joke, but who has been reprimanded for even one of those "jokes"? Before the comments were purged on this article, there was mention of the Big O's accent, mocked by this joke, which varies according to the audience he is in front of. Hussein deserves ridicule and insult, Be aware, Doven is right, this is just a sign of the beginning of the Marxist suppression of ideas and speech. Besides, BO is not African American, he could better be described as Arab--American. Here's one that will get the Obamabots going.... I believe that he is a closet Muslim, and an enemy of the American Way. So there, am I racist because I feel he has associated with enemies of our country? Do you really think Socialist is "code " for black? If so, I do not care about your opinion.

And yet Palin can be hung on a noose and it's "art"? Where's the equal treatment? BO was hung from a tree and POLICE took it down. I just don't get it. If Palin is still hanging because it's "art", why did the police get involved and tear down BO? Puhhhleazzzeee. Double standards across the board.

Sounds as if Jane made a stupid mistake.

I’ve not read (or even seen) the e-mail, so I cannot comment on its content.

However, there are plenty of ignorant or otherwise insensitive people who think its funny to pass around spam, regardless of the hurtful or hateful things it might say about someone.

And when it is done on our time (the taxpayer), I find that to be offensive.
Jane and all government employees are supposed to be working for you and me…not sending out spam on state computers.

To be fair, I know Rep. Cox and I can say with 99% certainty that he would not approve of Jane spamming people – whether it was about Sen. Obama or not.

After reading some of the previous posts, some of you don’t get it, either.
It’s not a “Freedom of speech” issue.
No, not “All jokes are funny”.

And the ignorance continues about Obama, such as:
“I believe that he is a closet Muslim”

Sad…some of you are very sad people.

Eric, are you blind? The subject line and contents of the joke are printed in the story above... so, you have both read and seen it. Recognize what you've read before commenting... otherwise, people are going to assume that you are ignorant and insensitive. Sad... very sad Eric.

Well we can all sit around and say what we want to but Im offended by that radical priest, and goofy preacher that tried to make my girl Hillary look bad.Im sorry folks but the scale has been leaning to one side here.Just because they are white folks does that give them the right to do what they did.I say leave the back door and move toward the front. This aggravates me to no end, leave the woman alone and move on lets not make a big deal out of this and get the black folks all shook-up over this. The more its carried out the more it gets people mad and hurt. This is such a touchy touchy subject and I feel yes thats right I feel like we should find a way to put color in its place and thats on a canvas.

It's the sort of joke that only a racist Republican would find to be funny.

Barack Hussein Obama speaks better Standard American English than any of the racist hicks who make fun of the African-American dialect.

Now. Chin...that accent you hear isn't an African-American dialect! Believe ME. It is pure southside Chicago dialect. Black, white, mexican, pr's, italians, whatever have it. I have one EXACTLY like it.

If you call that Standard American English..then you better tell that to the HICKS here in Tulsa!!! LOL :-D

Bluebird -

The JOKE for which woman was reprimanded was a caricature of the African-American dialect, which I NEVER hear from Obama. What I hear from BHO is Standard American English, which he learned from his Kansas white mother and Kansas white grandparents while growing up in Hawaii. He didn't relocate to Chicago until he was in his 20's, so I don't think he ever learned to talk like Chicago talks.

I used to live near Chicago. Chicagoans are friends of mine. Obama talks nothing like Chicago. Think of the original Mayor Daley - now THAT's Chicago.

Now what I don't understand is, if a Black person had sent the same exact joke via email to a whote man or women, that wouldn't be considered "racist!" but if a white person send it to a black person al HELL breaks loose! This to me is not funny that a White person has to watch everything htye say but a Black person can say anything they want because if we fight it, then it's considered as "racism." I'm tired of having to watch every single thing I say. I'm Hispanic and I'm not easily offened by Hispanic jokes, because I myself know that the joke wasn't and isn't about me. I don't let myself get all wound up with this stupid nonsense. I have more important things to worry about.
DRY IT UP! It was harmelss joke.

Signed; not easily offended

It's comforting to see that the state of race relations in Tulsa has not changed over the years.
It is truly amazing to read the hate contained in some of these comments aimed at people of color.
I hope the next generation of "Okies" turn out a bit more tolerant.

Hey!
learn2speakenglish!
Can you READ English?

Maybe you have difficulty comprehending English.
Shall I try German...or would Spanish suit you?

One more time (just for you, since you appairently did not grasp what I wrote):
"I’ve not read (or even seen) the e-mail, so I cannot comment on its content."

Meaning:
I did not personally get a copy of the e-mail.
And if YOU had read the news story above, you might understand that the joke was in the form of a cartoon (that's something with pictures!).

Have a happy day!
;-)
