Veteran Inhofe elected again
Sen. Jim Inhofe casts his vote in Tuesday's election. The blunt-speaking conservative won a third full term Tuesday as he cruised past Democrat Andrew Rice. MIKE SIMONS/Tulsa World

Republican U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe cruised to a 17-point victory over Democratic challenger Andrew Rice on Tuesday, winning a third full term in a campaign that both candidates said offered a clear choice in candidates.
Inhofe, 73, portrayed himself as steadfast conservative.
Rice, 35 and a state senator, made no attempt to position himself to the right of Inhofe, as some Oklahoma Democrats have in the past. Instead, he presented himself as a results-oriented moderate who would not put party above his constituents.
It was a tough sell, especially for a candidate practically unknown outside of his Oklahoma City legislative district at the outset, and in the end, not many Oklahomans bought it. Largely complete returns from The Associated Press showed Rice carrying only four counties in eastern Oklahoma.
Inhofe surpassed 600,000 votes with about 10 percent of the precincts still to be counted, topping the 584,000 he polled in 2002.
Rice and Inhofe spoke briefly by telephone Tuesday night once the outcome was clear. Rice spokeswoman Geri Prado said Rice, who developed laryngitis during the course of the evening, had no regrets about not trying to compete with Inhofe’s conservatism.
“That’s not who Andrew Rice is,” Prado said. “He’s very proud of staying true to his beliefs. He’s a solution-finder.
“We’re proud of the race we ran. Andrew is proud of all the people across the state he was able to see across the state.”
Inhofe’s spokesman said he was traveling Tuesday night and was unavailable for comment. A poll taken last week showed Rice running about even with Inhofe in metropolitan Tulsa, but on Tuesday, Inhofe carried Tulsa County by 15 percentage points and all surrounding counties except Okmulgee County by similar or greater margins.

Subheading: Oklahoma remains laughing stock among educated Americans. Congratulations to Mr. Inhofe. Corporate America couldn't have a better employee.

dontaxme and rocketman,
I'm sorry that you chose to attack my profession rather than respond to my comment. That says more about you than it does about me. A little bitter tonight?
Yes, I am proud to be an educator, and that is a real job. I don't make as much money as I could in another profession, but I make a difference every day -- do you? I don't try to indoctrinate my students with my political beliefs, because that is not my job.
Inhofe and Coburn DO make Oklahoma a laughingstock among educated Americans. They are an embarrassment.
Rocketman, we are NOT the 48th best educated state, although we do rank around that mark in teacher pay and amount spent per pupil. Our students consistently score very well compared to our regional and national peers in standardized tests.
Dontaxme, I supported Inhofe's vote on the bailout bill, but IMHO it was a political vote, not one inspired by his loyalty to working people. It's one of perhaps two votes I have agreed with. His career has been sent shilling for the oil industry. His campaign was negative and slimy. I am not a straight ticket voter. I have voted for non-Democrats, but never for a Republican. I simply do not share their world view nor their solutions.

dontaxme, you just gained more respect from me! Thank you.
I will look forward to many more debates. That's what it's all about in America, isn't it?

Well here it comes partial birth abortion coming back, fairness doctrine, and alot higher taxes. Weve done it now. Not only have we given the nation over to a cummunist we have gotten rid of any possibility to stop him by giving him a phillibuster proof congress. It breaks my heart to think that the horror of partial birth abortion is coming back and that after the attempt at abortion is unsuccessful that the baby will be discarded and left to die in a bucket with a towel over it.

The lesson the Republicans learned, if you are going to fight a war or two, better win it well before your term is up. We know the Democrat will not get us into a war, no matter how many terrorist attacks there are on our soil or against our interest.

James,
Sorry I missed it by 10 states. we are ranked 38th according to ACT scores as of August of 2007. The statistic I could not find was our ranking compared to the total number of students taking the test.
About your comment, Oklahoma is the laughing stock of educated Americans. According to what study?
Uh, no I am not at all bitter. I understand you win some and you lose some.
I am sorry I attacked your profession, I should have been more clear and said a government employee who teaches at a government school.
School vouchers would be a progressive way to educate our youth. Not the monopolistic system we have now, unless you are fortunate enough to send your children to the private school or your choice.

As a devout Christian and conservative - It is going to take a lot of scotch to get through these next few years...in reference to putting up with the elected officials from both parties.

Guellermo, I'll answer your question, "What do you call it when the govenment saved Chrysler Corp 20 years ago? " I call it a business loan, and the brilliant Lee Iacoca paid it off, earlier than what was expected if I remember correctly. Alot of people don't remember that loan.
Senator Inhofe is a good representative for our state and will look after the interests of our state because a majority of the voters chose him over Mr Rice. Some of us have to live with Obama as Pres, and some of you have to live with Inhofe as Senator. Like Ramrod mentioned, it might take alot of scotch whiskey to get through the next several years.

I would be interested to see how many of your consider Theodore Roosevelt (the trust-buster, economic regulator, and instituter or the graduated income tax (i.e. Obama's tax plan in which the wealthy pay more)) a socialist. The fact is Obama's policies are purely American and have been shown to work in the past time and again whereas deregulation has resulted in several things: boom and bust cycles, child labor, sweat shops, outsourcing, the need for unions, concentration of wealth, expanding poverty, less purchasing power for the middle class. The problem is that there are no markets in the U.S. sufficiently competitive to be free-markets, without regulation the U.S. economy collapses because most consumer markets are at best oligopolies.

To all those preparing for the sad times ahead I have one question.
What world do you live in?
In my world that has been ruled for the last eight long years by W Bush and the wonderful Republicans, the American dollar is worth less than the Canadian. The stock market has crashed, the economy is in a shambles and 600000 Americans lost their jobs last month. Thousands of innocent people, American and otherwise have been vaporized in a war thats cause is questionable at best.
Pull your head out, turn off Rush and take a look at whats going on around you.

A sad day for Oklahoma and a great day for America.
Socialism? Next you will will talking about communism.
What do you call it when the govenment saved Chrysler Corp 20 years ago, What do you call it when the govenment had to step in and save the monetary system?
Get over it, change is good and the people of America have spoken and said enough with the Bush doctrine.
Inhofe better come around with his thought process or he will continued to be laughed out of Washington with his out dated views about the enivirnoment and the war.
