What's red all over? Oklahoma

Mapping the election results county-by-county across America, most states reveal a quilted pattern of red and blue, with a few solid blue patches in the Northeast.

Only one state turns solid red.

"Inside the room, the noise was all positive" at the Republican watch party on election night in Oklahoma City, state GOP chairman Gary Jones said Wednesday.

"Outside of Oklahoma, things were different."

Oklahoma was the only place in the whole country where every single county voted for John McCain, making it the reddest of the red states.

McCain took 65.6 percent of the total vote in Oklahoma — nearly two out of three voters. He even topped 80 percent in several western counties and approached 90 percent across the Panhandle.

Barack Obama performed best in Muskogee and the surrounding counties but never came within 5 points of a majority.

"Why are we the most single conservative red state out of 50?" asked Ivan Holmes, the state Democratic Party chairman. "I don't know. I really don't know, but we are."

Voting patterns prove it, he said, because 30 percent of Oklahoma Democrats vote Republican in almost every election.

The Democratic Party simply hasn't done a good job of recruiting candidates that reflect the conservative nature of Oklahoma, Holmes said.

Tuesday's election gave the GOP control of the state Senate for the first time in history and added four seats to the party's majority in the state House.

Of course, it's not that Democrats never win in Oklahoma, as evidenced by Democratic Gov. Brad Henry's presence Tuesday night at Obama's victory celebration in Chicago.

But in Oklahoma, Democrats sometimes distance themselves from the national party.

U.S. Rep. Dan Boren, for example, made headlines in June when he refused to endorse his own party's presidential nominee because of Obama's record, which Boren described as "the most liberal in the United States Senate."

The only non-Republican in the state's congressional delegation, Boren later made it clear that he would vote for Obama.

But in August, he broke party ranks again to criticize a plank in the Democratic platform that called for "standing up to oil companies."

Oklahoma's deep red complexion comes mostly from the state's religious demographics, said Keith Gaddie, a pollster and professor of political science at the University of Oklahoma.

Socially conservative evangelicals have a majority.

"It's just who we are," Gaddie said.

Oklahoma is more than all red, we have the highest percentage of voters casting their votes for PALIN-mccain. We like the way the country is being run. A collapsing economy, a war without end, another war going bad, a socialist president buying banks and insurance companies, and a country that cannot stop stuffing dope in its young people.

Yesterday, I had someone tell me that our lives as we know them are over. I hope so!

Until many Okies, turn OFF that A.M radio, and stop getting their morals mislead rightwing christians and evangelicals, Oklahoma will stay red.
Sad, but true

getreal, Your comment is on the mark. And as far as the "state's religious demographics", they could do a lot more in helping the sick, the homeless, the needy. They express their religion adamantly, but their actions fall short.

If tomorrow all the things were gone,
I’d worked for all my life.
And I had to start again,
with just my children and my wife.

I’d thank my lucky stars,
to be livin here today.
‘Cause the flag still stands for freedom,
and he can’t take that away.

I’m proud to be an Oklahoman,
where at least I know I’m free.
And I wont forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me. (even though he has)

And to think. People think Oklahomans are stupid. Well this story says we are the smartest state in the country. It is to bad so many people were fooled by obama's empty promises. His promise is socializm and Oklahoma does not want it. Soon they will regret making this historical moment, and discover some changes are not always good.

With all the research I've done viewing video and listening to audio of his interviews and speeches in his past, I never once came across where he ever acknowledged our fighting men and women who fought, died, disabled for our freedoms. He has never once acknowledged how great this country and its freedoms are, until he won the nomination when he admitted that he was "finally proud of his country". Well, sorry Obama, but most Oklahomans have been proud to be Americans their whole life no matter what cards were dealt them.

"We like the way the country is being run."

Huh?

Well, okay - America is a free country and we're all free to think (or not) as we see fit.
But for me, I'm glad the Bush Administration is on the way out.
I would have liked to see the old white guy get in office, but I wasn't too keen on the babe from Alaska (all form, no substance).

The GOP I grew up with used to stay the heck out of peoples lives.
Now, the Republicans want to control our thoughts, our bodies and our pocketbooks.
And where did that get us?

Hey, if YOU are happy with the state of the economy, the situation in Iraq and all the other events...well, even pigs are happy to stay in their slop.

If Oklahoma has a lick of sense, we'll start working to catch up with the 21st Century and focus on bringing in new business and improving our children's health and education.

Eric as far as the Iraq comment, you should read more of the paper this morning. It appears we are winning sucessfully. They are downsizing the troops. So inform yourself a little. That is the problem with 30% of Oklahomans, they open their mouth before they have the facts. I guess that is one success obom wont be able to claim.

Having lived in progressive states most of his life, my husband commented while watching election results "notice how the red states are typically the lowest in education?" I am appalled that every county voted red in OK, mainy under the disillusioned concepts of freedom and patriotism. Egregious in this day and age that these same people are asking God to lead them into war, doing exactly as the terrorists do. What gives you the right to terrorize? Open that Bible one more time, and read that commandment that says "Thou Shalt Not Kill." What hypocrisy. Like Ghandi said "I like your Jesus, but not your Christians. They are so unlike your Jesus." I love Jesus Christ, and I believe his teachings, and I know for a fact that he got through life without ever killing, or condoning killing. How can people say they're devout Christians and not know this?

A little education goes a long way, and when you don't understand something get to know it better. READ people, educate yourself, learn about everything, discover every side of the argument. Unfortunately, too many people rely on the absolute libel and slander they get in an email from their buddy. It's in print isn't it? Then it must be true if it's in black and white (for those of you who can actually read).

If you would bother to get to know our new President, you would see that he is a kind, loving, family man who has the best interests of all people at heart and a proven track record. The rest of the world sees him for what he is...a true world leader. We are entering into a new era of peace and understanding, and we are sorry to you war mongers out there, but the time for primitive violence is OVER.

Wise Women Weild Words Without Weapons. It's time that uneducated men followed.

Doven, I think you need to go back and watch some Obama videos as well as listen to his acceptance speech. He is a PROUD American and supports the troops. Just because he did not serve his country as a military person, does not make him any less an Amercian than it does those who chose to serve. Also, he chose NOT to use the troops as a platform. I respect that he kept his campaign out of that arena. We heard enough of it from McCain!

I am a proud born and raised Oklahoman but am embarassed that we continue to send a man BACK to the Senate who is completely out of touch with the younger generation. I am 39 and Jim Inhoff is NOT the man we need up on The Hill!

Oklahoma may have decided to vote RED but I proudly did NOT!

Chase, you're on to something. Finally, someone on this thread who is using his brains.

I've lived in just about every part of this country, traveled it all. And, when people find out I'm from Oklahoma, I defend the state, especially the Tulsa area. But, when I come back to Tulsa from time to time, our read some of the comments on this web site, I find it hard to defend a lot of what goes on in this State. I'm still proud to be from here, but I do find the level of ignorance and xenopobia to be pretty high in Oklahoma.

The metropolitan areas of OKC and Tulsa aren't quite as bad, as you would expect, but there is definately an isolationist tone to the State as a whole. People in the State are friendly (I'm caucasian, so I can't speak to anyone else's experience in this area), but definately irrationally fearful of outsiders or change.

Again, it's not as bad as some places in the South, but the people of Oklahoma have a lot of catching up to do. It's an uphill battle because of the limited resources of the State and because the State is so insulated from the day to day goings on of the rest of the world. For the moment, sadly, ignorance reigns. This doesn't mean that ignorance equals red state, but, from the point of view of Inhoffe or McCain, it doesn't hurt.

Oklahoma leads the nation in high divorce rates, unwed pregnancy, obesity, low test scores, smoking, and childhood poverty, but we have nice churches and country clubs, full greedy and ignorant hypocrites who have mastered hiring illegal's to drive the wages, then , then tell the people that demand fair wages and affordable healthcare, they are just trying to get their money. BUT OKLAHOMA IS RED, I just with it was sooner football and not republican red!!!!

We are red all over - mainstream Oklahoma is red because McCain didn't win and the rest of us are red from the embarrassment that Oklahoma is so predictable that it was put in the McCain column at 7:01, a minute after the polls closed.

007, while I agree with you I just wanted to clerify that Oklahoma is NOT in the lead in unwed pregnancy, obesity, smoking, or test scores. We are in the top 10 but we don't lead the nation. Other than that I agree with you completely.

Doven, if Oklahomans are supposedly so smart, then why is it that you obviously don't know how to spell.

I've lived here a year and a half and I've seen very little to suggest that Oklahomans are a deeply religious people. They may claim it, but it is not observed in their actions.

I believe most folks around here are surprised at how conservative we are and quite frankly racially insensitive. For the moment there are things this state is just not ready for. A black man for president was just unthinkable for too many Oklahomans.
While I do not believe any significant part of the state population are members of the Klan, we are a state where the number of Klan groups have doubled. We are also a state where not one public school has dropped its Indian mascot. We are home to the worst race riot in U.S. history. The Osage reign of Terror by white businessmen. An Osage man running for re election in Osage Country was openly criticizes through rancher funded mailers for being Indian.
we have a ways to go and grow. Peace

Matt- hold out hope buddy! The fact that we vote the most conservative in the country is largely due to demographics, but those demographics are slowly changing (you are proof!)

As our state economy and poulation base becomes more diverse, so will our voters.

I was born and raised here then moved away because of our poor job market. I came back from the east coast 12 years ago, and I am still amazed how insulated (and isolated) we are from much of what happens in our country. It's not that many Oklahoman's resist change, they're just afraid of it.

It will take time though (my mother still thinks high def television is a government conspiracy)

LOL! Politico, that is great.

Strangelove, I will try and hang in there, but some of the people in this state are just so darned stupid it is crazy. You try and talk calmly, and politely to them and they blow up on you and rant on with their right wing Rush B.S. Oh well though, I guess most of the people here are just slower than the rest of the country.
