The administrator of Reproductive Services in Tulsa describes the controversial law as cruel.

OKLAHOMA CITY — The administrator of a Tulsa clinic that performs abortions said Friday that she is pleased that a controversial abortion law has been put on hold.

Linda Meek, executive administrator of Reproductive Services in Tulsa, described as cruel the law that requires women seeking an abortion to get an ultrasound within an hour of the procedure and to be advised about what the ultrasound shows.

Every patient gets an ultrasound, she said, adding, "We answer any questions they have."

An Oklahoma County district judge last week put the new law, which was to take effect Nov. 1, on hold. The action came at the request of the plaintiffs and defendants.

Nova Health Systems, the parent group of Reproductive Services in Tulsa, filed suit in October in Oklahoma County District Court, challenging Senate Bill 1878. Nova alleges that a woman's right to privacy is violated because it requires her to listen to unwelcome speech by the government while in a private setting, among other things.

Charlie Price, a spokesman for Oklahoma Attorney General Drew Edmondson, said Nova filed the suit at the last minute, giving the state only days to respond to arguments that Nova spent months preparing.

"Because the legislation as passed did not contain an emergency clause, it would have been difficult to argue successfully against an injunction," Price said. "There was a
substantial likelihood that an injunction granted by the court would have been open-ended. By agreeing to an expedited injunction schedule, we retain some control over the hearing calendar and should see a much quicker resolution to this litigation."

The temporary injunction is in effect until March 27 or until the judge rules on a request to issue a preliminary injunction.

Meek said the law is vague, which creates confusion about its implementation.

Reproductive Services is a nonprofit clinic that performs about 200 abortions each month.

The clinic also provides contraception counseling and services, pregnancy testing, options counseling, adoption counseling and referrals for other medical and social services, including referrals to an on-site licensed adoption agency.

Supporters of the law say it is necessary so that women are fully informed before they undergo the procedure.

Let's throw some more crap on the shoulders of someone that has already made a difficult decision. We can require murderers to watch video of the autopsy of those they kill, that couldn't possibly be cruel and unusual punnishment, if this is allowable. And what's wrong with listening to government-prepared dribble, students do it every day, and they are all well informed.

One in eight pregnancies ends in spontaneous miscarriage because something goes wrong and the body detects it and end the pregnancy. Nature admits to mistakes. Religion has absolutely no answers to overpopulation, desertification/flooding of global warming, and the chaos that comes from that.

The only thing crueler is the baby who is only an hour away from being mutilated out of convenience 90% of the time. Such double standards we have. If you get into a carwreck and casue harm to a pregnant mother and her unborn child you are charged with two crime, because that mother wanted her baby. But these mother's don't want their babies so they don't matter. We can legally kill them. Life is solely God's to give and God's to take. Period.

I don't think the law is unreasonable, but I'm surprised that the Attorney General is saying the lawsuit was filed at "the last minute". What in the world does that mean? To me it means they were unprepared.

In any event, I don't see the ultrasound being a problem. If it helps someone reconsider their decision all the better.

I see nothing wrong with this law. Anything that might encourage a woman to want to keep her child is a good thing. I agree with Strangelove. This was not a last minute lawsuit. What we have is a pro-abortion attorney general in Edmondson making up a reason to go along with this lawsuit.

Graychin, Eucha (11/8/2008 9:11:05 AM)
My state representative, Dr. Doug Cox, was the only Republican who did not vote to override the Governor's veto of this horrible bill. He told me that although he opposes abortion, as a practicing physician he could not approve of allowing the State to go into the treatment room with the patient and doctor to this degree.

An unwanted ultrasound, which under the law may be required to be given vaginally, is nothing but Big Government harassment of a woman already in a difficult situation. Now we watch tireless advocates of smaller government melt away and disappear. They seem to only want smaller government except when they want bigger government.

Could we all work together on ways to help prevent unwanted pregnancies?

This bill does just that, tries to turn unwanted babies into wanted babies.

So Linda Meeks says its cruel to require an ultrasound, and Greychin calls it harassment of a woman already in a difficult situation, and Dr. Doug Cox says he can't approve of allowing the State to go into the treatment room with the patient and doctor!!!

WHAT ABOUT THE BABY???

As for Meeks, I suspect the only cruelty she sees is that Reporductive Services will lose its funding when it is no longer able to kill 200 babies each month. Ironic, isn't it, that an orgainzation devoted to killing babies calls itself "Reproductive". They should change their name to Destructive Services.

Harassment? If it is in fact harassment, which I refute, that is great if it saves one baby's life! And, this has nothing to do with big vs. small government, it concerns the protection of life, which is one of the founding principles of our nation.

This puts Drew Edmondson in a very delicate position. He is hoping to be his partys' nominee for governor in 2010. He has to figure out how to capture the Democratic nomination without alienating the moderates within his party that he must have to win a statewide election. I'm not expecting a very vigorous representation of the states interest in this lawsuit.

if the anti-abortion zealots would spend as much time and energy focusing on issues concerning babies outside the womb rather than in the womb, the world might be a better place. How about encouraging women to give their babies up for adoption or, better yet, teach and encourage women how not to have "unwanted" pregnancies in the first place. I'm not talking abstinence, I'm talking birth control. Where would we be if by some miracle we taught our young women that having a baby is a lot of responsibility and actually costs money, instead of praising unwed mothers in movies and television shows. At one point in time, being an unwed mother brought shame. When we lost our shame, we lost everything!!!

And it's not cruel to kill the unwanted baby?
Oh.. as long as we don't have to have our conscience speak to us then we are ok with killing the baby.
What a freakin drag.
The value of a human life does not exist.
Desensitized nation marches on.

Personally, I oppose abortion.
However, I have never walked in the shoes of those who go that route.
It is a personal decision between the woman and God (or, her conscience).

Still - given the option between legal or illegal abortions, I'd vote hands-down for legal - at least one could be assured that one of two lives would be spared.

For those who are hard-line against ANY abortion under AY circumstance, well then, PLEASE start your campaign NOW to get the state legislature to approve MORE money for health and education of these kids.
Seems like some in the so-called "pro-life" camp sure are quick to demand a woman carry to term, but they don't give two hoots about that child once its born.

I am very pro life and I don't base my beliefs on any Old Testament teaching. In fact, you don't even have to believe in a the Bible to think abortion is wrong. I think it is wrong to kill a human child, and I don't care how small it is.

I still can't figure out why it is cruel to show the truth. No matter what we think, for or against, it is what it is.

This seems more likes a "plan B" to anti-abortion legislation than anything... If we can'ts top you from having an abortion than we're sure as heck going to make it as hard for you as possible.

I'm personally against abortion, but like a few have said before me this law is allowing Gov't to stick their nose in a woman's healthcare business. One more step towards losing our freedoms!

Thank God this ridiculous law has been put on hold. Kudos to Nova, Linda Meek and Reproductive Services for all they do to help women in crisis situations - women who have to make difficult (and personal) choices. This law is absurd and violates patient rights.

Thank you, Joe Allen Doty for making some very valid and intelligent points. You are right, not all Democrats are pro-abortion, in fact, I am not sure I know anyone who is pro-abortion, but rather, pro-choice. Oh, and I am a registered Republican.

Again, thank God for putting this violation of a law on hold.

I am always amazed when people defend the right to abortion as though the only thing at stake in the issue is womens' rights. Once we, as women, get pregnant, we have another person inside us, and that person should have the same human rights to which anyone else is entitled.

I doubt God had anything to do with it.
