Casino to rock
Cherokee resort to become Hard Rock Casino Tulsa
Construction workers are working on a $150 million expansion to Cherokee Casino Resort, which will be rebranded as the Hard Rock Casino Tulsa. SHANE BEVEL/Tulsa World

Cherokee resort to become Hard Rock Casino Tulsa
CATOOSA — The Cherokee Casino Resort will be rebranded as Hard Rock Casino Tulsa next spring, the Cherokee Nation said Friday.
The casino will add hundreds of jobs through next year and could become a regional tourist destination, the tribe said.
Hard Rock, best known for housing rock memorabilia, will bring its marketing clout to the resort, which is undergoing a $150 million expansion.
Cherokee Nation will retain management and ownership, said David Stewart, CEO of Cherokee Nation Enterprises.
"We were very sensitive to that, because we know our customer base very well," he said.
The casino will feature some music memorabilia from Oklahoma, Stewart said.
"We'll still have the Hard Rock experience, but we're going to use the history of Tulsa and Oklahoma, along with a lot of different music — country western, rock 'n' roll and jazz — and make it uniquely Oklahoma," he said.
A 2,500-seat concert hall and theater slated to open next summer or fall is expected to bring big-name acts to the Tulsa area, Stewart said.
"We'll have access to entertainment through the Hard Rock family connection, which will allow us to have ongoing entertainment," he said.
The resort will hire roughly 125 people in December and add about 200 more next year, Stewart said, bringing its total employment to about 2,300.
The tribe opted to brand the casino using Tulsa instead of Cherokee Nation or Catoosa.
"We're considered the Tulsa region, and we wanted a name that people would recognize," Stewart said. "It seems to be the right choice from a pure marketing standpoint."
T-shirts proclaiming "Hard Rock Casino Tulsa" will eventually be available for purchase, said Cherokee Nation spokesman Mike Miller.
Some portions of the resort, including the hotel and casino, will continue to operate 24 hours a day, he said.
The deal is pending review of the National Indian Gaming Commission.
Cherokee Nation Enterprises LLC, the hospitality arm of the Cherokee Nation, operates casinos, convenience stores, tobacco shops and hotels.
The tribe has operated a casino at the Catoosa location since the early 1990s. In 2004, the casino doubled its gaming area and added onto the existing hotel. The tribe started construction on a 19-story resort tower earlier this year, Miller said.
Cherokee Nation's casino operations earned a profit of more than $111 million in fiscal year 2007, according to a report released by the tribe earlier this year.
Hard Rock Holdings LLC, which owns the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Las Vegas, is jointly owned by Morgans Hotel Group and DLJ Merchant Banking Partners.
In 2007, the Seminole Tribe of Florida acquired a controlling interest in Hard Rock Cafe International USA Inc., which operates the Hard Rock Cafe chain and licenses the rights to the Hard Rock Hotel and Casinos east of the Mississippi River.

I think the Cherokees have done a great job with the casino and the Hard Rock brand should be a solid move. I think one thing that they need to get a handle on now is the stink from the smoking. I belong to an organization that has had an annual meeting there every year for the last several years. The stink of cigarette smoke now permeates everywhere and spoils the who experience. I didn't stay at the hotel because I live in Tulsa but many attendees from out of town stay elsewhere. They say the stink has permeated the hotel tower.
Hopefully they will address the issue forcefully soon. The separate non-smoking areas are not working at all.

There is no such thing as a no smoking area as smoke premeates everywhere, through the tiniest crack or crevice. Just about the only things could do would be to build a separate casino building for smokers only, totally ban smoking. Having one room being non-smoking and the adjoining room being for smokers with or without doors is totally silly. Even the most up to date, powerful ventilation system couldn't rid it of smoke.
I sometimes am visiting relatives around the Oklahoma-Kansas border (Arkansas City, KS & Ponca City, OK areas) and have been to the First Council Casino, Native Lights Casino, another casino in Newkirk, OK. They are all 3 quite smokey, especially Native Lights. I don't go to casinos that often, but when I do it would be nice if it wasn't so smokey. A couple of years ago I stayed in the hotel at the Cherokee Casino, and I didn't notice our room smelling of smoke. Of the 3 casinos right around Tulsa, I think Creek Nation is the worse about smoke. Hopefully the new one they are building will improve the smoke problem.
It reminds me of one time in the early 1990's I was working in downtown at a law firm and ate lunch one day at a cafe on Main Street. While waiting at my table for my lunch to be served, I noticed the table next to me had a small sign on it that it was a "no smoking" table, apparently I had sat down at a table for smokers. Both tables were maybe 6 feet apart....and no there was no invisible wall dividing the two tables. ha ha ha How stupid is that?

My other complaint with casinos is the noise factor. I developed (actually it happened over night) a ringing in my ears about 6 years ago, very annoying. The casinos have the ding-ding, bing-bing, etc. loud noises from the machines, then there is the loud music or loud bands playing. It is very hard on my ears, so I wear ear plugs to help defuse some of the noise. I don't mind the gambling machines making some noises I just wish they weren't so loud, the volume needs to be turned down some. Also the bands could do well to lower the volume of their amps, we could still enjoy their music.
With the ringing in my ears (actually I hear more like a bunch of crickets....I know it's weird). My ear doctor said use to the ringing ear problems usually showed up in people in the 70's plus years of age, but the past 10 years they are getting patients in their 40's, 50's, 60's. He said this is due to the loud concerts, iPod, Mpg players, etc. He said most people have their volume up too high. He said if a person standing next to you can hear your player when it's in your ear, the volume is too high.
BTW.......I have had leg aches off and on for years but never did seek medical help, I would just take a Tylenol or Advil. In 2002, I finally mentioned it to my doctor, she prescribed me Quinine tablets (I didn't know medical even still used quinine anymore as that is a very old medication). After 3 or 4 days of taking the pills, my legs still hurt and one night I went to bed and started hearing a weird sound in my ears, the next day it was gone, then that night it started up again and has been continuous since then. I went to WebMD on the internet to check up on the Quinine tablets. One of the side effects can cause ringing in the ears. So I immediately called my doctor and she said to discontinue taking the tablets.....well duhhhh.
Normally I always read over the info about side effects of new medicines before taking it, but where I was living at the time (small town in Kansas) the local pharmacy didn't include much info like that. Normally I checked on WebMD about it, but at the time of obtaining that medication, I was busy and hadn't taken the time to check on it.
So a warning for everyone, avoid Quinine medications prescription or over-the-counter, just in case.

To the Einstein who wanted to know why it wouldn't say Hard Rock Casino: Catoosa. Because outside of Tulsa, much less Oklahoma, very few people have heard of "Catoosa."

I'm with you, Yogi. Seems that the CN is so hot on bettering everyone's health until it comes to the casino. Seems the KACHING! of the money is much louder than the cancer and heart attack costs they're having to pay for. There's so much smoking going on from the Medicine Men's tobacco granting 'luck' to those who go to the casino, it is killing people! You'd think CN would think they may be saving money from the hospital bills they have to pay just from those affected by the smoking.

they do have comment/suggestion cards all over the casino.
not sure if they actually read them or if anyone who complains on here would actually step foot in the casino to fill one out.
just saying...

Maybe they aren't the ones smoking or drinking or gambling. The members themselves may not darken the doors of the casinos. Does that still make them hypocrites? The Councilmen/women are sort of like the President of the USA. They can vote on things but they can't make the rules themselves. They have to have approval before anything actually happens. Some of them may be against the casinos but they can't stop what the CN as a whole intends on doing.

Ok JAD, give me chapter and verse where it is a sin to gamble. I will agree it is foolish but no where in the Bible does it say it is a sin. Homosexuality on the other hand is clearly a sin in Gods eyes and the Bible clearly states that.

My prediction is that all the golden eggs Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma have placed in their single gaming basket will spill out and be dashed against the hard rock. As the US economy worsens non-Indians will lust after the revenue they see corrupt Indian governments hording. The fact that it is non-Indian money flooding the war chests of subordinate pseudo sovereigns will be so distasteful that the former opponents of gaming will insist that Tulsa and Oklahoma City open Los Vegas style casinos. Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma will not be able to compete and be left with a polluted pit in Catoosa and the other locations as well. The failure of CNO to use their current windfalls for the substantial economic development and benefit of the Cherokees in their own communities will only fortify Oklahoma’s decision to take over.

Casinos are garish, vulgar dens where welfare recipients and pensioners can be relieved of their earnings. The house ALWAYS wins. If anyone claims otherwise, they're stupid, or a liar. Gambling is an individual's own business, as is soliciting a prostitute, smoking pot, having a drink, or a toot of cocaine. I could care less what a persons personal vices are. But the money that's funnelled out of state from these "Indian" casinos is the crime here. Our roads are wagon trails. Our schools are a joke. Our taxes outrageous for the lack of civilization they are buying us. Casinos should ante up and fix this state up, or be run out of town. Either or. I don't care. As always, the ignorant working class are the victims, and the powerful reap the harvest.
