Slide Show: Fans pack BOK Center to cheer for 'Idols'
Finalists from the TV show's eighth season performed.
"American Idol" season-eight winner Kris Allen performs at the BOK Center on Friday. CORY YOUNG/Tulsa World

While a rock show thundered on the other side of downtown, pop music had its moment Friday night at "American Idols Live" in the BOK Center.
Fans packed the arena to cheer for their favorite singers from the top 10 finalists of America's most popular TV show's eighth season.
Winner and Arkansas homeboy Kris Allen and runner-up Adam Lambert closed the show and drew the biggest cheers — but their sets could not have been more different.
Allen played stripped-down, soulful versions of pop and rock favorites, while Lambert played a sexed-up set of metal-infused, artsy glam rock.
Allen — sporting jeans and a plaid shirt — opted for a set that included Bill Withers' "Ain't No Sunshine," the Killers' "All These Things I've Done" and the Beatles' "Hey Jude."
Lambert, decked out in a spiked black leather jacket and sparkly belt buckle, slithered through a set that included Tears for Fears' "Mad World," Muse's "Starlight" and a medley of David Bowie hits.
The fans loved it all, whether they were sporting yellow "I love Kris Allen" T-shirts or shorts with "Adamgasm" on the rear. Some fans found a happy compromise with "We (heart) Kradam" shirts.
Allison Iraheta and Danny Gokey caused plenty of frenzy among the crowd, too.
Gokey closed the set with two emotional Rascal Flatts covers — a smart choice for an Oklahoma audience, since Rascal Flatts guitarist Joe Don Rooney went to high school in Picher. He also added some salsa dancing flair
to his cover of Santana's "Maria Maria."
Iraheta, this season's resident rocker chick, broke out her guitar for a cover of Pink's "Rock Star" and growled on Heart's "Barracuda."
She also joined Lambert for a duet on Foghat's "Slow Ride," which provided the show's raciest moment: An excited fan tossed her lacy red bra on stage.
The other six finalists — Matt Giraud, Anoop Desai, Lil Rounds, Scott MacIntyre, Megan Joy and Michael Sarver — treated the show's die-hard fans to a set that included everything from Willie Nelson to Beyonce.
Teens and their parents lined up outside the BOK Center hours before the show in July heat just to catch a glimpse of the "Idols," hoping to snag autographs and pictures of their favorites. Once inside the arena, they screamed until they were hoarse and never put the cell phone cameras away.
A year ago, Kris Allen was studying business at college in Conway, Ark. — loving music but thinking it would always be a side gig.
On Saturday, he heads home to headline an arena performance in North Little Rock.
He and his fellow idols are a little sleep-deprived and homesick, but they're all thrilled to be living their dream: getting paid to sing.
"I never really expected this to happen. That's why I was going to college," Allen said in a preshow interview.
He has several dozen cities and tour stops to go, but wherever the next few months take him, he'll be thrilled to be there.
"I have no reason to complain," he said.

I favored Kris all season of American Idol, but I thought Adam was very talented also. I felt it would be a men's year again, like the year before when David Cook won. Couldn't figure out how Megan got in, other than she was blonde and pretty. I quickly got tired of looking at her butt-ugly tattoo on her arm and her singing hurt my ears.
I have to laugh at 3cko's comment about being stuck watching American Idol because his mom and sister like it. 3cko, did it ever cross your mind to do something else with your time if you don't like American Idol? Like maybe read a book, newspaper, magazine, listen to the radio, spend time on the computer, talk with friends, go out and exercise, walk, jog, swim? There are a ton of things to do besides watching television.

It was a heck of a show - Adam was definitely the reason most were there as he is an up and coming great one - I shared with my wife that I must be getting old as it been a while since I've been to a show where bras & panties have been thrown onstage at a performer - Kris is talented and his niche was being the natural which he is. When Matt Giraud was performing "Hard to Handle" he took to the piano and there for a moment I thought the "Killer" was loose again at the keyboard - he was entertaining.Of course Meagan Joy is easy to look at, and in her pink dress I thought I was looking at American Idol Barbie, but in the end, he looks got her further than her talent - she can't sing.
It was a good show for all ages as I saw everyone from little ones to old tarts enjoying their favorite singers - Scott MacIntyre surprised me as I had thought he was getting the sympathy vote all season, but live in front of a crowd, he really can sing. Michael Sarver, elf shoes and all, just sang "I just **** glad to be here" !

Well of course we like Kris here number8. We ARE in the midwest. I'm not ashamed of it. Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, David Cook and Kris Allen are all from the midwest. It seems to me that the Midwest must have the fastest fingers for voting. I think Adam is a great talent, but he was already that great before the show. Kris used the venue to learn and improve. Actually if you really think about it, Adam came out just fine--he got national exposure and will not be tied to American Idol producers for his first contract. There is really no need for anger.

Thank you Carly for the update. I'm glad Adam got what is his due. I don't know why you think that I was criticizing Adam, I just said that Kris probably won because the midwest contestants seem to get more votes. I agree with you that Adam will become a much bigger star and last much longer. Last year wasn't the first time that the best performer lost.

Adam is a talented vocalist and wardrobe artist but Kris is four-times the more talented artist-pianist, guitarist, writer AND vocalist. He'll be working long after Adam fizzles out from being a one-trick pony.

I wish all of Oklahoma's homophobes would just go away......I swear they would pick a killer like Charles Manson to have to dinner rather than Adam just because he is gay.

Adam and Kris are both talented. They both have different styles. I would say the younger generation would like Adam and most of the older generation normally would like Kris better. Adam knows how to work it and he will make plenty of money.

lol stuff like this always cracks me up. first off im not even a fan of the show, yet i end up stuck watching it because my mom and sister do like it. Now this year is the first year that there was really anyone i even liked on there Kris, Adam, and Allison were awesome throughout the whole show. whats the funniest about this is that in the end its a moot argument like honestly adams gonna land a deal no matter what because yes he was the most talented he was steadily the best performer every week, but Kris grew during that show, unlike some of the other contestants like Megan and Lil, Kris listened and worked on what the judges said he needed to. Adam yes was already a star so all this controversy and whining is pointless both are gonna become recording artists so let whatever MAY have happened whether there was bias or not go and just enjoy both of their great singing capabilities

The ridiculousness rabidness of many Kris fans put him in the awkward situation that he is in where he is having to follow a clearly far more popular (and undoubtedly far more talented) artist onto the stage. Still, not content with the results of their pointless efforts, they hound anyone who dares to do anything that may suggest Kris is not as popular as a winner should be.
Wasn't it enough that this review suggested that the reaction for Kris was anywhere near that for Adam? Honestly, if that was the case, I must have been at a different show. The reaction to Kris was embarrassing following that for Adam. I felt for the poor guy.
Last week, Kris fans had seizures because it was reported in the UK media that Adam's fansite is the second largest in the world of any Sony BMG artist and they made up a multitude of excuses for why Kris' site is nowhere near as large. The same people who laughed at Danny's fans for his lack of internet presence during the competition were now making excuses for the winner very evidently not being anywhere near as popular as he should be. You have to laugh.
Kris fans were warned of the backlash if he won but their attitude was "just vote, vote, vote and we can deal with the backlash later". Well, the backlash started as soon as the result was announced and continues, only getting bigger with every impressive performance Adam gives, every new offer that he receives and every other rock legend that praises him. Deal with it! Don't jump down the throats of people just doing their job.
By the way, OWEN, Adam has been signed by the same management and to another (bigger) subsidiary of Sony BMG than Kris. They have been lumbered with Kris and can't do anything about it for the next year at least. They were hardly going to let the one they wanted go, were they?

I have tried and tried to like Adam but I get so turned off by fans attacking anyone remotely friendly towards Kris. I'm sick of it and it affects what I think of Adam. I can't help it. Kris was my favorite but I did like Adam as well. I wouldn't be caught dead at an Adam solo contest because of these obsessed overzealous fans. KRIS WON THE CONTEST!! If he gets praise it does not mean the writer is biased. Some of us like Kris better. Definition of bias is what the AI judges were.

God smote Egypt and later the Israelites for worshiping idols. The U.S.A. has yet to get its due for doing the same thing. Lets see we have gladiatorial games, we have cities that make Sodom and Gomorrah look like Mr. Rogers neighborhood, we elevate people to idol status each week so they can serve our own egos and boost our self worth based on the definition of worth being established by people sitting in a glass and steel building at Hollywood and Vine but is really a shell company ran by a London production company better known for TPIR and Family Fued.

Well this is a nice generic, flatline type of review. No kudos, no negatives, just yucking it up to please everyone and nobody. I guess you used the photo of Adam to say what you were too 'afraid' to say in your review: that he was the best. Although I do give you kudos for not leaving anyone out...you also gave no indication of your REAL opinion of the performances...yes I'm an Adam fan and I continue to register for these random newspaper websites just so that I comment on these reviews...a couple of ppl before me have already called you out on your bias towards Kris and your obvious prejudice towards Adam...listen if you can't see and hear that Adam's talent and performances are WORLDS BEYOND what the other 9 ppl do you are just deaf and blind. I guess this is what we can expect from the midwest. You can write in fear it you want to, but the crowds in city after city, screaming for Adam inside and outside the venues...tell the true tale...Adam is in a league of his own on this tour! I guess we will see how it goes in AR...fans were kind to Kris in LA and San Diego...we will see how 'friendly' midwesterners are to Adam (especially the cheaters who got Kris the undeserved win)...don't get me wrong I like Kris a lot, he's a nice guy and a good singer...but where talent is concerned...he doesn't hold a candle to Adam and EVERYONE KNOWS IT!!! Including Kris.

Kris fans raked her through the coals and forced her to change Adams picture at the very top and insert Kris. Bitter, bitter Kris fans.

Thanks to all the folks at 19 for a great production. Nearly flawless performances from all ten talented singers.
It takes courage to get out and audition, and then lots of strength to carry on through rigorous schedules and daily scrutiny of the paparazzi and the public eye.
The Idol and Finalists perform for us, they entertain us, and they provide hours of enjoyment for me personally.
I'm so grateful to each of them for sharing their evening with me. The Idols do more than perform, they give back - visiting kids in the hospital, and a number of other charitable works. The tickets were a birthday present for me, and it's one of the most memorable evenings ever.
Talent does not have a race, creed, color or sexual performance. The universe has blessed us richly with the gifts of these performers, and rather than ridicule, or harass them, we should give thanks.
I respect the golden rule, do unto others as you would have them do unto you. If you welcome ridicule and harassment when you seek only to provide joy, then by all means, continue to throw stones.
