Slide Show: History comes to life
McCartney's concert a tour of modern music history
Paul McCartney performs a sold-out show Monday at the BOK Center. TOM GILBERT / Tulsa World

For music news and updates, read Tulsa World music reporter Jennifer Chancellor’s blog.
Assistant Scene Editor Sarah Hart:
Read more on Paul McCartney’s sold-out concert at the BOK Center.
The BOK Center celebrated its first birthday Monday night with one of the biggest names in modern music history — Paul McCartney.
A sold-out crowd crammed into the venue, the only indoor show on the former Beatle's current U.S. tour. Gov. Brad Henry declared Monday to be "Paul McCartney Day."
McCartney's set stretched to nearly three hours and featured a roster of Beatles and Wings hits, including "Drive My Car," "Live and Let Die," "The Long and Winding Road," "Eleanor Rigby," "Back in the U.S.S.R.," "I'm Down," "Helter Skelter," "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band," and "Hey Jude."
Many of the songs were never performed live by the Beatles. The band stopped touring in 1966, before the release of some of its most popular albums, including "Abbey Road," "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band," "The White Album," "Let It Be" and "Yellow Submarine."
"Hello, Tulsa! Hello, Oklahoma!" McCartney yelled after a couple of songs, bringing
nearly 20,000 cheering spectators to their feet.
Reminiscent of iconic images of teens swooning before the stage at Beatles' concerts, women of all ages hopped to their feet, shaking and screaming, leaning over a safety rail up front and reaching out to McCartney.
McCartney, 67, spoke about how happy he was to be back in Tulsa after his vacation last year, when he traced Route 66. He paused and shrugged, bowed, and said he needed to pause to "take it all in."
Female screams erupted. "Now, that's the noise," he said with a laugh.
Listeners teared up as McCartney explained the meaning of his song "Blackbird," and the stage cleared for just him and his guitar.
"Picture a young black girl in the troubled South" during the 1960s, he said. "We saw what was happening in the States," and that song was the Beatles' commentary on the state of the troubled union, he said.
That brought the first of many standing ovations he received during the show.
He took over a Yamaha grand piano for "The Long and Winding Road" before dedicating "My Love" to his late wife and former Wings bandmate, Linda McCartney. She died in 1998 from complications of cancer.
Part of being a living legend is dedicating so much of a set to those who have already gone: fellow Beatles John Lennon and George Harrison; Linda McCartney; even Jimi Hendrix. And McCartney thanked the people who for decades helped his meteoric rise to fame.
He lifted the mood with a happy whistle and foot-stomping "Dance Tonight," soon followed by "Back in the U.S.S.R.," "Band on the Run," and a full-crowd sing-along of "Give Peace a Chance."
McCartney wrote nearly all of these, many with Lennon's help.
Once considered "the cute one" of the Beatles, McCartney is considered by many to be the greatest songwriter in history. He's far and away one of the most successful.
Time magazine included Beatles members this year in its list of "The Most Important People of the 20th Century." McCartney's influence is broad and deep, and his fans span generations.
He performed the old favorites "Let It Be" and "A Day in the Life," and he included "Sing the Change" by the Firemen, his current band.
His entire show was tight and loud — and timeless.

I was Boomer. It was outstanding! I'm deaf now and nearly had a heart attack when the last pyrotechnic caused me to nearly land in my husband's lap, but I had a great time.

That's weird. I think my brain is scrambled. I used the word "nearly" twice in my last post and I really don't remember ever using it before..... ever. Well, nearly ever.

Great concert! Too bad the doors opened late, the lines for entry were very long and security was slow. I stood in line for more than 45 minutes to get into the BOK center. Not enough time to eat in the BOK before making it to our seats. I was looking to sample one of the meals. But at least I've got $60 meal money in my pocket that I will spend somewhere other than at the BOK Center.

Great great show... Worth every penny for me (wasn't sure going in)
WRY999 has a valid point tho. What was the problem getting people in tonight? I've been to several "sold out" shows at the BOK and tonight's lines to get in were crazy. Perhaps opening another entrance?
Whatever they do, they need to do something to get people in the BOK quicker then they did tonight.

Best concert I ever recall seeing - everything about it met and exceeded expectations. McCartney was very generous with his time and talent, taking no breaks, holding back nothing. I suspect he even shared some of his own original artwork with us on the projected display behind the band. As we rubbernecked our way out of the BOK after the concert, we felt the usual hometown pride in Tulsa's new, bold, hugely successful showpiece.

Paul McCartney's show at the BOK Center was, as we used to say way back when, absolutely fab! Thank you Sir Paul for bringing your music, charm, and love to Tulsa.
However to the BOK Center, I must say, "Shame on you!" Why? I am disabled. I suffer, and I do mean suffer, from arthritis in my lower spine. I cannot walk far, nor can I stand for any length of time. One would think that a venue as nice and shiny as the BOK Center would have some handicapped parking--how I loathe that word, handicapped--for a few of the unfortunates among us. My wife and I arrived at the venue a little before six this evening, hoping to find a place to park. It may as well have been six in the morning because when I stopped to ask a policewoman if she could direct me toward the handicapped parking, she told me there was none. She politely informed me they would allow us to drop off the handicapped person at the front of the venue and then park the car. I didn't bother to ask her what the options were if the handicapped person happened to be the driver, as it was in my case. I already knew what that answer would be.
Folks, the handicapped and disabled of Tulsa aren't asking for a hand out. We are, as The Beatles sang so very long ago, just looking to get by, with a little help from our friends.

I'm just glad it didn't start in the storms before we got in. lol That was the most awesome concert I've ever been to. You can just tell that Paul actually does this just for the love of the music. I ran into lots of friends I hadn't seen in a while too. Fun stuff! :)

Macca was awesome, but the drummer stole the show. Laboriel is better than Ringo and sings better than Linda McCartney...

Sir Paul delivered. The concert was awesome and I think everyone was shocked when he kept picking up the guitar to sing one more.

I am glad that everyone was excited and enjoyed the show. I saw him twice in Dallas and once in OKC and I had tickets to see him in Tulsa, but my wife did not want to sit in the 300 level seats after seeing him up close in Dallas four years ago so we gave them to a friend. I am glad we got to see him previously and my friend got to see him this time around "When He's Sixty....seven."

So after Rod Stewart there aren't any BIG names scheduled for the BOK? Britney Spears and Miley Cyrus are for the kids, and Taylor Swift is for the country music fans, but what about the rest of us? Any announcements about to be made to give us something to look forward to?

Tremendous. The pyrotechnics during Live and Let Die were creative, but the most powerful moment for me was Paul alone at the Piano singing Let It Be.

I wish the World could accurately report on an event at BOK. Are you under some influence NOT to report what really happens. To pretty it up so people will keep buying tickets? First, the show was fantastic. Thank you Paul McCartney and band for one of the best shows Tulsa has ever seen. That being said, the BOK again did not shine. First, getting in was ridiculous. Lines went back at least 2 blocks to the north and east and halfway around the building to the south and west. The show was to begin at 7:30p. We didn't even get thur the doors until 7:20p. It was nearly 8:30p before the show actually started (and we were in the car going home by 11:10p after a 4 block walk so there goes the "set stretched to nearly 3 hours" comment from above.) After finally getting in the door at 7:20p, we enter the venue to find the lights out in the upper bowl. BOK do you wonder why people take so long to get seated??? My son used the light from his cell phone to identify the seat numbers so we could sit down. Someone finally had a light bulb moment around 7:50p to turn the lights back up and seating seemed to go better. Again, we had a wonderful time once the show started. But the World really needs to be more accurate in it's reporting. And BOK, could you please start a show on time?

I am awed by Sir Paul, after last night. My favorite part was when everyone in the room was swaying to "Give Peace a Chance."
I was there with my 16 year-old son, who already loved Beatles music, but, I believe, became a complete Paul McCartney fan last night. We loved the sign that a guy up front kept holding up: "Paul, please kiss my wife!"
But two more comments: The BOK Center did a really bad job of getting people inside, due to security. They bottlenecked the entrance badly. We were packed in so close out there that if anything had caused panic, I think people would have died.
Then when I was going through security, first they tried to check my purse twice (when thousands of people were still waiting to get in), then when I told the second girl that it had already been checked, she told me to just go on in. What if I'd been lying?
Second, I've heard the question asked, "After Paul, who can they get for their Second anniversary?"
Well, they are totally different artists, and I know I'll get flack for this, but I suggest Jimmy Buffet!
But I love Paul and am so glad I got to see him!
