Plan ahead for easy BOK access

Fans are searched as they enter the BOK Arena to see the Paul McCartney show. TOM GILBERT / Tulsa World

If you're headed downtown to see Rod Stewart tonight, the Lil Wayne Back to School Bash on Friday or Def Leppard with Cheap Trick and Poison on Saturday night at the BOK Center, plan ahead.

Long lines for the one-year anniversary BOK Center celebration show featuring Paul McCartney on Monday night have worried some Tulsa music fans about quick and organized access to the venue.

Delays have happened for other concerts at BOK Center with bands like Metallica and Nine Inch Nails. It's common for big-name acts to request added security — and safety screenings, agreed BOK Center General Manager John Bolton and BOK Center director of marketing and sales Casey Sparks.

Both the opening time and security checks are dictated by the performing act, not the venue, said Sparks.

Rumors go unchecked when lines are long and patience is short. However, Tulsa Police spokesmen confirm that delays are rarely due to fights, threats, traffic or other crime-related issues. In fact, TPD Officer Leland Ashley worked during Monday's McCartney show, and told the Tulsa World that the delays he witnessed were tied to "wanding," or standard security and bag checks on ticket holders as they entered the venue.

Also, the McCartney show sold out. Doors opened about 10 minutes after the advertised "door" time of 6:30 p.m. on Monday when McCartney's sound check ran long, said Bolton. More than 16,000 fans passed security checks. As a result, McCartney's show started about 45 minutes late in order to give fans more
time to get to their seats, organizers said.

This was the only indoor show on McCartney's tour — and stage, sound, lighting and pyrotechnics set-ups had to be modified, said Sparks.

Bolton added "there will be no problems with Rod Stewart," mainly because lines should be somewhat shorter.

And, fortunately, tickets are still available for each of this weekend's shows, which also should ease the before-show rush and crushing long lines, said Bolton.

Doors open for the Rod Stewart show at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, show time is 8 p.m. Doors open for the Lil Wayne show at 7 p.m. Friday, show time is 8 p.m. Doors open for the Def Leppard/Cheap Trick/Poison show at 5:30 on Saturday, show time is 7 p.m.

Sparks agreed. "Fans here really have far less scrutiny going into the BOK Center than they do at other venues in larger cities. Sometimes there are inconveniences. We plan ahead, but some things are unavoidable," she said.

Fans can also quicken the venue entry process.

1. The box office opens on 10 a.m. on show days. Patrons don't have to wait until doors open to buy or pick up tickets.

2. Fans with tickets in hand can enter three ways: Through the main entrance off Denver, the box office entrance off Third Street or through the westside VIP entrance with required tickets.

3. Doors usually open 1 1/2 hours before the concert starts. Before leaving for a show, read tickets carefully — and check the official BOK Center Web site — for last-minute updates and changes.

4. Leave home early. Try to arrive at the venue an hour before show time to allow for traffic snarls, crowds, lines, parking, dining, unexpected hold-ups, security searches, etc.

5. Be prepared to have purses and bags searched, have tickets out and ready, and ID at hand. Remember, extra security and searches occur at the request of the performing artist.

6. Lock cameras, weapons, flasks, recorders and other banned items in a vehicle or leave at home. Line bottlenecks often occur after security "flags" fans who try to sneak in banned items. Carry only minimal essentials: tickets, ID, credit card, cash, cell phone, etc.

7. For more information on any BOK Center show, visit tulsaworld.com/BOK.

8. Plan ahead. Expect delays. Be polite. Be patient.

Since when do you have to show an ID to be admitted to a concert?

The Rod Stewart concert isn't tonight, it's tomorrow night (Thursday), so I hope no one will be headed downtown tonight as mentioned at the beginning of this article.

Tulsa has not had a large gathering spot that funnels everyone in at one place that I know of.
ORU has the facility but I believe you can enter or exit at different areas on the building. The BOK is like standing in line at your favorite hot dog stand to get in, it's going to take a while. I guess the design could have included a different entry and exit way.

I have seen Rod before in OKC, great concert!!!

One of the kinks to be worked out would be opening the doors on time which did not happen Monday night and maybe even a little earlier for the "big name" acts. Based upon the time the doors opened, there was no way the show was going to begin at 7:30 pm as the ticket said. The arena was only half full at that time.

Ric, please read. The article mentioned 3 ways of getting into the BOK, depending if you already have tickets, etc.

Also the article states it is up to the musician as to what kind of security is used. So don't complain about the long waits and blame it on the BOK Center.

Carrie, to answer your question: "...Since when do you have to show an ID to be admitted to a concert?" Sad to say, since we have all kinds of nut jobs running loose and also possible terrorists that could do harm to the musician or to the public.

Hogrider, one nut already shot a Beatle, it seems like taking some extra precautions to protect McCartney and the fans was prudent. The show started a little late, but anybody that was there would argue that McCartney out performed all expectations.

Wanding and searching are understandable. The way the BOK did it is not.

And if you're going to hold up 17,000 people just to say you had security, have it. They had about 3 purse searchers, but all in a row that each of us had to pass.

The first checked my purse. The second also asked to, but when I told her it had already been searched, she waved me in.

My son had keys in his pocket and the wand beeped him. the security guy said, "Belt Buckle?" My son, hot and tired, answered, "Yes" and was waved on through.

That crowd worried me. The way stuff was arranged, everyone from every direction kept funneling into an area that got tighter and tighter.

If people had known what was going on, say if they had multiple roped off lines each leading to a wander and purse looker each, we probably could have gotten in much faster and with less stress.

The concert was awesome, by the way, but the manager of the BOK needs to take responsiblity and make changes.

What no one in the world could have expected an increase(cost to taxpayers) in security. Those who did not forsee this expense, I would say are rookies at event management and planning. Possible slight of hand by those pushing the center in the first place.

Does anyone believe that it would have been even remotely impossible to get a bomb in there that night, even with the intense, onerous security? They are just selling the fear.

We need to remember that WE are the customers and WE demand more respect that we received the other night!

How many people did not pass the searches?

Would they tell us there was a threat if there had been one? Certainly not until after they earned our money.

It is interesting that exactly one year after they had obviously pulled all the stops to make going to a concert very organized and safe, they give up and let it go to the dogs. What a night to do so.

I will probably not return. Between the fees, and the giving up of my constitutional rights, they can just sell tickets to the TSA people and see how they like it. What is next, strip searches? interrogations? a naked people line?

Sorry, this is a concert not the white house. If they can't accomodate the people they overcharged any better than to have them waiting in line for an hour and starting an hour late, then I wasted my money on the BOK center and Bolton needs to step down and let someone from a big city take over.

Where was the communication that they would be opening the doors late? Or that they were searching people?

The concert was great, but I will be much more discerning about who I am willing to strip for in the future!

Thank you for explaining. Far too many people would rather blame and complain than understand the reasoning. Very few concerts I've been to have started on time. If it's a good show there is a crowd. If it's a big name there is extra security. That's how it goes. If you can't accept some sort of inconvenience or unexpected something, stay home and wait for it to be on TV, someone else will buy your ticket.

HEY ... baddoctorsforoklahoma ... and
HardHeartedHanna ... Can you two read?
The venue was READY AND WAITING TO OPEN. Sir Paul's sound check went long so doors didn't open on time. The ARTISTS essentially rent out the venue. Doors open when THEY are ready, not when the venue is ready. It sucks, but that's the way it is.

And Carrie ... IDs are used for everyone picking up tickets, purchasing tickets or buying alcohol, among other things. It happens at concerts EVERY SINGLE TIME at EVERY SINGLE VENUE that has live concerts in Tulsa. I always keep mine close for easy access. It saves time for everyone.

HardHeartedHanna - The doors did not open because PM was on the stage sound checking. Security was for the saftey of the artist and fans. Do you really think the BOK Center does not want people in the building eating, drinking and buying merch. Your constitutional rights were violated that made me laugh out loud....are you serious??? Please stay home from now on and live in your bubble. Also I think you need to change your picture. "I just hate stupid people"...hummm BOK Center has done an excellent job! Congrats!

Glad to know I could entertain you. Also glad to know there are still people out there that will accept any kind of service, at any price. Please keep paying the high fees for zero consideration. There is a name for those kinds of people, W.C. Fields called them suckers. One born every minute, and two to take them.

And just because it happens somewhere else, that doesn't justify it happening here.

look at the fees, multiply times 18,000, then tell me you got your money's worth waiting for 3 minimum wage temporary workers to look in your purse.

amazing--security checks at a concert but gun toting Republicans can gain admittance to Obama's town hall meetings. I have no problems with security checks and believe NO ONE should be allowed guns in the presence of the POTUS> heck protesters weren't allowed on the same side of the street when Cheney came to town.
