Negative Campaigning

Recently, there has been a lot of controversy in the news, on both national and local levels, related to negative campaigning. After interviewing people from a wide variety of age groups, religions and backgrounds I was surprised to find many of the responses the same.

A “clean” campaign has never been done, so negative campaigning has grown to be a bulky burden on candidates. Many people say that an election cannot be won without negative campaigning, which history backs up; but, most people I know look down upon it.

Negative campaigning is effective in the United States and other countries, because it makes things easier for voters. If every other commercial is about candidates’ flaws, then the public feels that it knows the facts and then believes the need to read the papers and keep up with the election isn’t necessary. People are willing to believe anything they hear, as long as it is what they want.
