One of my fondest memories of Wayman was when we were in high school together. At Booker T., the band director, Mr. Davis would let the musicians practice on lunch hours in the band room. Wayman would leave the gym and attempt to play my bass. All the musicians would turn their noses up in air and point Tisdale out the door and head him back to the gym. It was years later Wayman became the most sought after bass players. Performing with all the greats and our idols, Stanley Clarke and George Duke, we were not jealous... just proud. The boy done good. On one of my last performances with Wayman, we shared the stage to honor Tulsa's own GAP Band. So long good friend.

SIckle Cell Poster Child 1987
, Marietta (5/15/2009 4:45:48 PM)
Wayman was the Ambassador for Sickle Cell Disease back in the 80's. I was the Sickle Cell poster Child of Tulsa Oklahoma during that time, I did a commercial and poster with Wayman. This is just shocking to me. I was just looking at our poster last night. He will be greatly missed and his family is definitely in my prayers.

I had the honor of attending Booker T. Washington High School with Wayman, and of working with Regina. I will never forget the many interactions I had with this great man. Although I was a year ahead of him, I visited BTW while he was deciding where to attend college. I was hoping he would choose OSU, but he told me he was probably going to OU. A year or so later, I was visiting OU for a football game. All of a sudden, I heard someone screaming my name, and I turned around, and it was Wayman - asking me if I realized I was at the wrong school! Everyone around me seemed surprised he knew me - he was such a celebrity there! During a basketball game at OSU a few years later, he spotted me and called me down to the court to chat with him. He never forgot me - no matter how long it had been since we had seen each other. I had other chances to be touched by this "gentle giant" as we performed at the some of the same music events later in our adult lives. He never forgot me and was such a genuine, friendly, and sincere person. I will continue to treasure each encounter, and will miss him, greatly. We have lost an incredible human being, but we will all meet again! My thoughts and prayers are with Regina and the rest of the Tisdale family.

I was privileged to have the opportunity to play basketball against Waymon Tisdale in high school and in the summer leagues. My Jenks team got to play Waymon's Hornets teams three times, and we never beat them. Waymon was a "rock star", the Lebron James or Michael Jordon of our time, and those Jenks-Washington games attracted big crowds from around the city and coaches from around the country. In the Tournament of Champions, when Waymon blocked my shot out of bounds, there was no trash talking or humiliation from Waymon; he just gave me a smile and a pat on the back. When I was lucky enough to block his shot, he would have the same reaction. He remained the same humble, great man after a hall-of-fame college career, making millions of dollars as a pro athlete, winnning a gold medal, and becoming a renowned musician. He helped build racial bridges in the Tulsa community more than he probably knew - - all Tulsans, white, black, north, south, loved Waymon and we all considered him our own. After some time of reflection and grieving, Tulsa should honor this great man as one of our greatest citizens and ambassadors for our community. Personally, I would love to see a statue of our #23 in front of the BOK Center. It would be fitting for the great Waymon Tisdale to shine his magnetic smile on Tulsa for the ages.
