OSU started four freshmen against Nebraska. They included inside
linebackers Taber LeBlanc and Billy Stone, wideout Willie Grissom
and right tackle Jeremy Offutt. Four other freshmen played as early
as the first quarter: wideout/corner back R.W. McQuarters, wideout
Sean Love, outside linebacker Jermaine Birdow and inside linebacker
Josh Green. The Cowboys started no freshmen in the opener a year
ago. The last freshman that started in an opener was tailback
Boogie Johnson in 1993.
* David Thompson's 79-yard run in the second quarter was the longest
since Barry Sanders ran for 80-yards against Iowa State in 1988.
* How deep is the Husker roster? Nebraska outside linebacker
Terrell Farley, who scored on a 29-yard interception return in the
second period, isn't even listed on the Huskers' two-deep chart.
Farley is a junior from Columbus, Ohio.
* In a departure from the Pat Jones era, OSU players entered the
field from the west end zone prior to kickoff. Normally the Cowboys
walk down the ramp and enter from the east end zone.
* Coach Bob Simmons didn't have the debut he would have liked. The
Cowboys' last two coaches, Jimmy Johnson (1979-83) and Pat Jones
(1984-94), fared much better. In Johnson's debut in 1979, OSU beat
North Texas State 25-7. During Jones' opening day in 1984, the
Cowboys won 45-3 over Arizona State. Johnson's overall opening day
record was 7-4 while Jones' was 10-2.
* OSU also opened on national television for the first time since the
1985 opener at Washington. Ironically, the last time the Cornhuskers visited
Lewis Field in 1993, the game was played on a Thursday night and on national
television. The Cornhuskers won 27-13.
* Nebraska's improved its record against OSU to 33-2-1. The last
time the Cowboys came away without a loss against the Cornhuskers
was in 1973 when they tied 17-17 on Lewis Field. OSU's last victory
over Nebraska was in 1961 when they won 14-6 in Stillwater.
* Three Cornhuskers are from Oklahoma including center Josh Heskew
(Mustang HS in Yukon), rover Mike Minton (Lawton) and linebacker Kareem
Sears (Enid).
* Tulsa's R.W. McQuarters will have a lot in common with Melvin Gilliam
when he joins the OSU basketball team as a point guard. Gilliam played
football from 1985-88 and was on the basketball team in 1986 and 1987.
Gilliam and McQuarters are also both from Washington High.
* The last time OSU hosted the defending national champion was in
1991 when they lost to Colorado 16-12. The Buffaloes scored a
touchdown on a fake field goal attempt with :12 left.
* Thursday's game's kickoff temperature of 99-degrees was the
highest in an OSU game in the last 20 years, topping the previous
high of 98-degrees vs. Tulsa on Sept. 1, 1990 at Stillwater.
* OSU wore orange uniforms for the first time since 1992 (wore
black the last two years).
* OSU allowed the most points by an opponent in a season-opener in
its 94-year history. Previous highs were 42 by Arkansas in 1951
(42-7) and by Michigan in 1926 (42-3). The victory margin was also
the highest against OSU in an opener since Michigan defeated the
Cowboys 42-3 in 1926.
* The last team to score 50 points in a game vs. OSU was Nebraska in
1992 (55-0).
* David Thompson recorded the fifth 100-yard rushing game of his
career. It also marked OSU's first 100-yard rushing game against
Nebraska since Barry Sanders gained 189 yards in 1988 against NU.
Nebraska's 64 points were the fourth most ever scored against OSU
behind Oklahoma in 1904 (75-0), 66 by Oklahoma in 1970 (66-6) and
65 by Nebraska in 1978 (65-31).
* Lawerence Phillip's 80-yard touchdown run was a career long for
the Nebraska back as well as the longest run against Oklahoma State
since Mike Gaddis of Oklahoma went for 80-yards in 1989 against OSU.
