Mayor Kathy Taylor announced Saturday night that she has initiated a citywide volunteer effort,“Operation Power Up,” in hopes of having power restored to every Tulsa resident by Christmas.

“This isn’t just a matter of community pride,”Taylor said. “It’s a matter of community help.”

Beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday, teams made up of firefighters, AEP-PSO workers, independent electricians and volunteers will fan out into neighborhoods to remove debris from power lines and make minor structural repairs that will allow power to be restored to homes.

The teams’ priority will be neighborhoods where lines have suffered the most damage — primarily north of 11th Street and west of Yale Avenue.

Volunteers can report at noon to one of three sites: GUTS Church, 9120 E. Broken Arrow Expressway; Mabee Center parking lot; or NorthRidge Shopping Center, 5100 N. Peoria Ave.

A second part of the effort will be the establishment of a central supply and dispatching station at Expo Square, where electricians can find electric meter parts that are in short supply.

Tulsa-area forecast

Sunday: Mostly sunny. Highs in the lower 40s. Light west wind.

Sunday night: Mostly clear. Lows in the mid-20s. Light winds.

Monday: Mostly sunny. Highs in the lower 50s.

Tuesday: Partly cloudy. Highs in the lower 50s.

Will the Mayor's family be out helping folks in North Tulsa?

Of course you won't see her out here. Ever. North Tulsa is pretty forgotten. Obviously. Sadly, I've heard people claim that if you drive any farther north than 31st st, you'll get shot.

Some of you south Tulsans are nuts. Get over whatever rumoured fears you have. Living here, for 6 years now, I have never seen anyone get shot/murdered/whatever. And never been broken into or vandalized. O_O

I didn't even know this was supposed to be the "bad side" of town until I went to a southside high school, and kids were afraid to come over. I just thought it was ugly. That's all. Surrounded by other quiet, hard working people, just with less money. =/

The mayor and her volunteers won't come near the TU area either!!!

It isn't good enough for her or their is too much work as we actually are without power.

Lets replace her and her minions!!!!
