Mayor seeks volunteers for Operation Power On
By STAFF REPORTS
Published:

Last Modified: 12/16/2007 9:26 AM
Mayor Kathy Taylor is calling on volunteers to help with Operation Power Up, an effort to restore electrical service to all Tulsans by Christmas Day.
Electricians and volunteers are sought to help reach into neighborhoods that were heavily impacted by last week's ice storm to remove debris from power lines and make minor structural repairs that will allow power to be restored.
Volunteers should call the Mayor's Action Line: 596-2100.
People in need of help from the effort should call the same number.
Volunteers will gather about noon that three locations and start their work about 1 p.m.. Gathering spots are: GUTS Church, 9120 E. Broken Arrow Expressway; the Oral Roberts University Mabee Center parking lot, and the NorthRidge Shopping Center, 5100 N. Peoria Ave.

WIll we see the mayor's family out there? I think not since they are sunning themselves at their Florida compound.

Don't we have "paid volunteers" that work for AEP and the city of Tulsa? I've seen neighbors helping neighbors since day one and I'm sure this effort can help as well, but let's not give any credit to the mayor for coming up with such a "novel" idea.

Hey chuck does it matter? Will we see you out there? I will be and it doesn't matter if Mayor Taylor and her family are out there or not.

I agree with David. If I could afford my family to leave during this time, I would. I dont think any less of them for doing it. Why should the family suffer because the Mom is the Mayor? Mayor Taylor is still here and that's all that matters. Alot of people will cry and complain but then not try to help themselves and others. If thats you then go back to New Orleans and leave us Tulsans to help each other out.

1 and 2, stop embarrassing Tulsa. All you do is cry and whine and people who read this might actually take you seriously, even though you are cowards on a blog.

I would love to help while I am there. I am active duty Navy and will be on leave in Tulsa (lots if family there)
Only problem is I won't be there until Tuesday. I am sure unfortunately all will not be fixed yet. Keep the faith people. I survived the fires of San Diego (twice now). It is tough going through it. Remember like they say in the Marines, what doesn;t kill you makes you stronger.

I will be cleaning up my own yard. I don't have the money to pay folks to clean up like Kathy Taylor does.

This is just another reason why we don't need a millionaire mayor like Kathy Taylor.
Why in the world is an electrician going to volunteer his time free when he's probably booked out the wazoo making lots of money.
AEP is paid back by FEMA. Let them finish the work. Let North Tulsa stay without power for a few more weeks. When the black people start coming to South Tulsa, then we'll get concerned.

#5, how am i being a coward? I didn't leave a pathetic, unfounded comment about someone else's valid question/comment as you did. You sir, are the coward. As I mentioned, neighbors have been helping neighbors and that's what happens in times of need, and by neighbors, I included myself and this will happen regardless of this campaign. To clarify further, I feel the hotline and mission are great in and of themselves, but i don't need the "Mayor's" credentials and name thrown in everywhere in order to raise perception that she is doing something. That's politics I guess.

Chuck- seems you have bad information. The mayor and her family did not have not will not leave Tulsa during this crisis. And yes members of her family wil be out today and every day until power is on. I personnally invite you to come work on the team I am asigned today. I will be at the mabee center at 1PM. Ask around for me when you get there.

Yeah, good ole Queen Bee Taylor. She probably has huge generators too. I would love to start a recall campaign against Taylor and get the ole millionaire out of office.
We are working on a website right now and trying to get people to help in our petition drive. Together we can get the old bitty out of office.

Just who is Kathy Taylor? I know she is the mayor, but what is her background. One of the comments on here, said that she is rich. I don't mean to sound mean-spirited, but Kathy Taylor looks like some old wash woman. She looks the farthest thing from rich. How did she ever get in office anyway? She must know the right people, because I don't think she has much going for her.

I fail to see why folks like chuck, hank, and chris bother to leave comments. You guys seem to be the "Captain Obvious's" of tulsa; pointing out everything that is already known. You have nothing to say that motivates or help in any manner. Just help thy neighbor. Why bother shooting a dead deer. Complianing never makes a situation better. So quit crying about the mayor when you are just as useless if not more so from your own point of view.

You all are a bunch of cry babies. Who cares if the mayor has power. There are so many people in Tulsa who need I help. I volunteered today. At this point, we went to north tulsa with the fire department and cleared away debris that was covering the power lines so PSO could restore them faster. Then my buddies and I went to our neighborhoods and worked on oncovering power lines there too. People should be helping each other. While we were volunteering, the motorcycle guys were riding about and people with absolutely nothing better to do were on the side of streets watching them go by. Whatever. You all cry about the mayor, but I'm sure you could find something more productive and positive to do with your time. Especially while our city needs us to put it back together.

Kathy Taylor took the bull by the horns and called on electric companies all over the US to respond to our despirate situation...she saved lives. She has demonstrated leadership in many ways, most evidently by not sitting around waiting for someone else to help Tulsa, Oklahoma. (Like other Mayor's have in the past...ex: New Orleans) We are proud of you Mayor Taylor...you go girl.

If Kathy Taylor were not wealthy, would that make you feel better? Why are so many people upset because she has money? If she didn't have money, that wouldn't make you any richer. It wouldn't give you electricity any sooner and, contrary to what you want to think, it didn't get her power any sooner either. So stick the the facts and the real issues. This whole deal of picking on her and her family because they've got it and you don't is old and tiring. It's like being mad at Brad Henry because he was in Hawaii and then because he couldn't get back when you thought he should.

I am not sure why everyone feels they should blame the Mayor for what went wrong during a storm. She has and had power because she bought a generator. We all knew there was going to be a storm so why blame her for having power. I live in mid-town and it was late Friday night before we got power back on. Restoring the power does not depend on who you are where you live. The power is restored as fast as it can by the hard working people from PSO and other states around the country. Why don't the people complaining think about all the workers that are from out of state and realize the sacrifices they have made in order to come and help us. They have left their homes and families the week before Christmas to come and help us. It does not matter who called them or how it happened. We need to be thankful that they are here and willing to help those who are not grateful.

You people astound me! It's not some political conspiracy that caused the storm. Kathy Taylor does come from money, but if you remember, she also declined her first yrs salary and had it put back into the city funds. Why do you begrudge anyone in town having electric when others don't during a storm - whether it's the mayor, a young couple with kids, or an elderly widow??? Point is, it's the luck of the draw, and if you have electric, then God bless you and I hope you invite your less fortunate friends and relatives over. And if you don't have that luck, then if you have the money for a generator and find one, good for you - get your friends and relatives over, too.

Geez people. I work in retail, and I gotta listen to you grumpy bickering people all day. This situation sucks. But whatever, it's life. I just got my electric back on today, w/o it for a week, and no money for a generator. Ironically enough, only hours after being hit by a PSO truck on the way to work today. O_o
Oddly, I wasn't worried about my car, just about being late to work.. And hoping those guys that hit me were still able to get out there and work.
The storm was unfortunate, and even though we were warned; we were unprepared. Can hardly find a generator, or chain saw in town. Trust me, I know.. But hey, most of the power has been restored, and debris cleared. It's still time of year to celebrate. Yea, our city pretty much blows. Morale is dismal. And unless you live south of like, 51st or so, most families are, well.. poor. =/ But maybe the constant christmas tunes, and stressed but cheerful customers I speak to each day, keeps my spirits up. Think about your families. I'm sure you're better off than billions of other people in this world. Think outside of your surroundings. If you're unable or not willing to help, complaining doesn't make miracles happen, actions do. Merry christmas people. Cheer up, it could be worse. Make the best of it, by buying awesome presents for your family. { Try Sears. Don't give a gift. Grant a wish. ;D }
