Workers threatened, police say

At least twice this week several residents have threatened to harm and even shoot workers who are restoring electric power in the aftermath of last week's ice storm.

On Tuesday, workers apparently were able to reconnect power to several houses in the 200 block of East Oklahoma Avenue for about 10 minutes but had to shut it off again as they did more work on the electric lines and equipment, Tulsa Police Sgt. Virgil Litterell said.

Several residents who had been without power for more than a week then threatened the workers, he said.

''There were some pretty serious threats -- threats about shooting,'' Litterell said.

A police officer had been stationed Tuesday to protect a different utility crew that was threatened Monday night in the 2800 block of East 44th Street North.

Litterell urged residents to be patient as the power is restored, and he cautioned people against threatening the workers.

''It does no good,'' he said. ''It's only going to delay the process. If they feel threatened, they're going to back off the site and call us."

Stupid, but it is also a symptom of the deep stress that has been caused by this storm.

The workers should have just packed their equipment and left, then what would the people doing the threatening have done. No gratitude whatsoever.

I think it is far more than just the deep stress caused by this storm. It's indicative of a bad character. They should be arrested. These PSO employees are working exhausting 16 hour shifts in the cold doing incredibly dangerous work. I worked with a woman whose husband is a PSO worker and I know how she worries about him when he is working a dangerous project like this. She would definitely prefer to have him safe at home and not get the "big check" or "massive OT" that so many have complained about on other TW message boards.

I'm one of the Tulsans without power (older neighborhood, big trees, ripped up meter can, damaged roof, etc) and will continue to be so for many, many days to come. In addition, I have the added burden of having been hit by an uninsured motorist days before the storm. Yes, that's two massive deductibles I have to pay - right at Christmas time. However, I can still recognize and appreciate the efforts of the workers. And, I can put the blame where it squarely belongs - on Mother Nature and that #$%@!* fool drugged out driver. I certainly hope that those who threatened the worker are not shown any leniency because of "stress". Oh, and I hope the guy who hit me only sees daylight through bars for a very, very, very long time!

The people in those areas who harassed and threatened workers should be deeply ashamed.

I work with someone who's husband worked with a crew until late in the evening.

They had to get police protection because several residents were threatening.

To top it off, the crew doing the work, late into the evening, was from out of state.

Fine way to thank people from leaving their own states at this time of year to help us.

I agree that they should be arrested. I shudder to think what those workers thought about our town after being treated so badly for trying to help them.

These idiots who were threatened by weather and loss of power... were appraently uncivilized and probably should not ever be homeowners.

If you cant have patience in a crisis to manage the issues, you will often fail to resolve those issues quickly.

No, Im not a phd or a doctor...

Just a computer guy, who had no tv or computer for a week or so.

yet my wife & family were safe & warm at relatives warm homes.

If not for them, we would have gone to hotels (as far as Henreetta).

Sounds like the utility workers should work only in the day light. Shots were heard again tonight. It is simply unacceptable to have the workers in a such a dangerous situation at night. Simply, If you want your power restored contain your emotions. I went with 9 days with any power and I know the frustration!

I don't understand how some people can be so ungrateful. People leaving their families in cold homes to go & turn others electric back on. Some people definatly were not raised to have any respect. No ones electric in the north tulsa area will be turned back on, because electric workers will be banned from the area. At this time I do know for a fact that electricians are being escorted to that area. How embarrassing for out of state workers to have to be escorted to the 'hood'. Thank god they got to go home & get out of this mess we like to call 'the north side"

Im embarrassed that some citizens are making our city look like thugs. It is our time to show we are a good city, not embarrass ourselves.

I am disgusted with the lack of self control. Do you think that you can get power on if you shoot the boys trying to turn it on? Kinda dumb of you huh? Put away the guns or you're not gonna get any freaking power ever!

I for one am extremely grateful to all of the workers that came to help during the city's crisis. I think it was a shame that some idiots threatened the workers, but I must say that I am also concerned about the ignorant comment made by James, Dec 19,2007 at 9:30 p.m. It is obvious that you are not educated because if you were you would know that you misspelled several words in your little rant. Who are you calling "uncivilized baboons"? Everybody in North Tulsa does not act the same and any intelligent person would not condone the action of shooting someone trying to help them. Instead of trying to name call, perhaps your time would be better spent studying the dictionary and learning about the spell check on your computer. By the way, wasn't it you that they caught stealing the copper wire off the trucks, what were you going to do with it, take it back to Oakhurst and use it to wire your trailer.
