Candidate's divorce record sealed
His request comes after bloggers post the documents online.

Dewey Bartlett Jr.:
"I have no desire to hide anything from public record."

Tulsa Elections:
Read bios of candidates for mayor, City Council and city auditor and view a map of City Council districts.
Citing fears of identity theft, Republican mayoral contender Dewey Bartlett Jr. had his divorce file sealed this week in Tulsa County District Court after local political bloggers began posting the documents online.
"I have no desire to hide anything from public record," Bartlett told the Tulsa World, but he called the bloggers' actions irresponsible. "I am glad for any member of the legitimate media to have total access to that information."
Tulsa County Special District Judge Rodney Sparkman on Thursday ordered the record of the Bartlett divorce case, filed in 2002, sealed from public view.
Sparkman's order directs the Tulsa County Court Clerk's Office to seal the record, "with access restricted to counsel of record and the parties, until and unless the Court orders otherwise."
The application for an order to immediately seal the record, filed by Bartlett's attorneys, states that "the file contains sensitive personal financial information such as account numbers, which are being publicly disseminated on the Internet by certain persons who post political blogs."
"This information, if provided publicly, will likely result in financial losses to plaintiff and poses the threat of identity theft," the application
asserts.
Joseph Farris, one of Bartlett's attorneys, said Friday that years ago, attorneys and parties weren't as careful as they are now in redacting Social Security numbers and personal identifying information from documents filed as court records.
Farris said that under current procedures, "we are supposed to redact" personal-data identifiers. If the Bartlett case had been filed today, "we would have redacted" those identifiers, he said.
Tulsa County Court Clerk Sally Howe Smith said the request to seal the entire case file "is not an isolated case."
Requests to seal court records have "become more and more usual," and "it's a problem to maintain public records that aren't public," she said.
Bartlett emphasized that he is an advocate of transparency and would make it a focal point of his mayoral administration.
"You have to make sure there's transparency in city government, otherwise the confidence of the taxpayer is lost," he said.
"I want to make sure the citizens are involved and get the information they need and deserve to make sure we the government are doing our best in watching over their money."
But there is a difference between government records and personal records that contain sensitive financial information, not just about his family, but former and current business partners, as well, he said.
"I was quite disturbed to find all of that was being disseminated on the Web," Bartlett said.
"Ninety-nine percent of our fellow citizens are honest and good people. It's that 1 percent that I didn't want to give the opportunity to unfairly use that information to help themselves and hurt a lot of others."
The distribution of the information began earlier this week on Michael Bates' conservative blog Batesline.
Bates said Friday that he went through the documents and redacted all of the sensitive information before posting them.
He also said he put up only a small portion of the documents available.
"I don't feel like I've breached his privacy in any way," Bates said, adding that marriage documents are public, and so are divorces.
Bartlett, who is one of 11 candidates vying for the GOP nomination in the mayor's race, has signed FOI Oklahoma's Open Government Pledge, which expresses a candidate's commitment to "uphold the inherent right of Oklahomans to know and be fully informed about their government."
Other mayoral candidates who have signed the pledge include Republicans Kevin Boggs, Chris Medlock, David O'Connor and Norris Streetman; and Democrats Tom Adelson, Robert Gwin Jr. and Paul Tay.
The primary election is Tuesday, and the general election is set Nov. 10.

"I have no desire to hide anything from public record," Bartlett told the Tulsa World"
To remove any doubt, Dewey could release the record with all SSN# and account numbers removed. That would show his full disclosure statement is valid.

Hee hee! Join Obama in the "coverup caper to destroy America!"
What's in that divorce decree that is too shameful for the eyes of American voters? Why don't you just release the original document and clear all this up, Dewey? Can't you just go back in time and alter your birth records to show that you're not really Dewey Bartlett, Jr.?
She caught you doing what? In flagrante delicato, too? You'll have to recuse me while I laugh!

Hence, his move to SEAL his divorce documents. In the interests of TRANSPARENCY??

Bates is a spineless twit...and he's the guy Medlock would make Chief of Staff! Does Tulsa really want a spoiled brat like Bates, who thinks he sooo smart because he graduated from MIT, to bully citizens along with Medlock, just because they have different views? I pray not!
Tulsa needs to put an end to the disease of Medlock/Bates once and for all, and send these two bullies packing!!!

LR, you're no lady. (TT's DA in drag?)
Did you even read the blog? It gives fair representation of the issue without exposing any information which could be used in identity theft.
Too late on the seal, Jr. Like most things, you should've thought of it sooner. So much for transparency.

It’s rather a sad commentary on the low level of simple decency that seems to permeate this supposedly wonderful world of politics on the blogosphere when a guy like Bates, who touts himself as a Christian Conservative, would revel in printing all the details of Dewey’s divorce. Particularly to gain advantage for his own flawed favorite, Medlock.
Why stoop to this level of gutter tabloidism, especially against someone within your own Republican party? Pretty sad!

It always cracks me up when people get upset about people exercising their first amendment rights and performing in-depth research that surpasses "legitimate media".

Jeez.........who cares about anybody's divorce details? Does it make any difference whether a candidate for any elected office has been divorced and why and what the decrees were?
Let's worry about the issues and the solutions.

Well...wonder what the public would think if they knew that of Dewey and Victoria's three kids that are "following in Dewey's footsteps," that only one of them is Dewey's? That they've been married for less than a year? That the three kids have three different fathers. That Dewey is husband number four for the woman that would be our "first lady." Devoted family man? For about the last ten months."

Actually, Ignatz, I didn't quote any allegations from Mrs. Bartlett's pleadings. Nearly all the material I posted (except for her brief response, as defendant in the case, to the initial petition) comes from his pleadings, and it sheds some interesting light on his financial acumen and his claim to be a successful businessman. I invite you to visit batesline com and judge for yourself. You may also be interested in what OSU journalism professor Joey Senat wrote about Bartlett's sealing of the case on the FOI Oklahoma blog and why it's important for court records to remain accessible to the public -- foioklahoma blogspot com

Who cares? As long as they are happy and the kids are happy, it shouldn't make any difference to you, me, or anybody else. Plus, it isn't anybody's business, anyway.

I found Bates' article extremely informative of how Dewey has managed all the money he has received from his inheritance. Very poorly. It also showed that he has earned very little income on his own merit as his income was stated to be derived from inheritance,of which he mismanaged and lost money. I believe that is what Bates wanted the public to realize, not any dirty little personal secrets. The divorce settlement went on for numerous years before finally it finally came to a conclusion. Again, Dewey jr. is not Dewey Sr. He is a spoiled elitist who believes he is entitled to his political good fortunes based on his name alone, not his abilities. He is not a moral man. Not the leader for Tulsa.

One more thought. This was sealed not for identity theft fear but for fear that the people would realize how poor a money manager Dewey is. Bates did a good job of eliminating any identity threats in his presentation. Please take the time to read this before you make a snap judgement against his motives.

Dewey, Jr. is a "businessman" in only the broadest sense of the word.
Dewey, Jr. is what we in Tulsa refer to as a Trust Fund Baby.
His successful oilman ancestors bequeathed a sizeable inheritance to Dewey, who has essentially never done a real day of work in his entire life.
Hence, his ability to serve on the original city council, paying $18K per annum, and later on various State and City Boards like the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority, and the Tulsa Airport Improvement Trust.
He plays at working, but is now and essentially has always been a moneyed, and aging playboy.
After 20 years, he finally traded in the old model wife for a Trophy Wife.
Maybe someone ought to seek out Wife #1, and ask her opinion about Junior, a la Jeri Ryan.
Remember her? Seven-of-Nine in the Star Trek Voyager series.
She had likewise had a nasty, bitter divorce from rich businessman Mr. Jack Ryan, who likewise got their divorce proceedings sealed by a state court judge.
Until, a Democrat California Judge UNSEALED the record in the "public's interest".
Wonder WHY?
Remember who Mr. Ryan's Illinois Senate Opponent just happened to be?
Our illustrious President: B.H.O'Bambi.
Someone's been opening doors, and spiking rivals for this promising young Black Radical/Marxist-Leninist for decades.
Wonder who?
KGB?
GRU?
FSB?
Will our country survive a President beholden to a foreign intelligence service?

How many fools have commented on this story. This is of no interest to the tens of thousands of people who will vote. You morons are so self centered and out of touch. People don't care about some ones divorce when 50S% of the people of Tulsa have been divorced or no someone who has. So, if your point is to turn people against Mr Bartlett, that was a hugh miscalculation and mistake. People don't care about this. Just remember this: Republicans have elected every Mayor. And if the majority think the best candidate to be Mayor is a democrat ( like Randall, Savage, and Taylor) they were all elected by Republicans. And nothing about divorce or Bates or Metlock does or has ever made a difference. Voters in Tulsa are very smart.
