Republican Dewey Bartlett Jr. and Democrat Tom Adelson held wide leads in their respective mayoral primaries heading into the final week of the campaign, according to an Oklahoma Poll conducted Aug. 29 to Sept. 1.
Three hundred likely voters from each party were surveyed, with 53 percent of Republicans choosing Bartlett from among the 11 GOP candidates and 54 percent of Democrats picking Adelson in a five-candidate field.
Republican Chris Medlock, with 15 percent of the GOP vote, was the only other candidate in either party to reach double digits. None of Adelson's opponents in the Democratic primary received more than 2 percent.
Twenty-one percent of Republicans and 39 percent of Democrats said they didn't know who they would vote for.
"The numbers are problematic for (Bartlett and Medlock) both," said Bill Shapard of SoonerPoll.com, which conducted the survey. "Obviously, Medlock would like better numbers. But it could also be bad for Dewey Bartlett. His supporters could say, 'Oh, he's got it won,' and stay home."
Bartlett leads Medlock in every demographic category, including self-identified conservatives.
"He's a true Tulsan," said poll respondent Clyde Barton, a retired physician. "He's for the betterment of Tulsa. He's not out there beating the drum for himself."
John Williams said he likes Bartlett's business background.
"Being a strict conservative . . . that's important to me," he said.
Medlock may benefit from his time on the Tulsa City Council.
Lorraine Jacobs said that's what initially attracted her to Medlock's candidacy.
"When they had discussion, a couple would always go against the others and I remember him as one of them," she said. "I thought he was good."
Jacobs said she was "not impressed with what I heard about Dewey Bartlett. It seems to me it's all about his (family) name. Let's give someone else a chance."
Bartlett's father, the late Dewey Bartlett Sr., served Oklahoma as governor and U.S. senator.
Scott Malone said she remembers Medlock from his council days, but is swayed more by his recent statements and by a lack of response from Bartlett's campaign.
"I put in a few calls, asking some questions, and Bartlett did not return my call," she said.
"I like the things Medlock says on his commercials, talking about turning the lights off at City Hall and being careful with money."
The Republican city auditor's primary remained a mystery to most of those polled 23 percent favored Preston Doerflinger, 8 percent favored Lynn Ruemier and 68 percent had no opinion.
The winner of the primary faces Democratic incumbent Phil Wood.
About the Oklahoma Poll
SoonerPoll.com conducted the scientific telephone survey from Aug. 29 to Sept. 1 of 300 Republican and 300 Democratic likely voters registered in the city of Tulsa. They were selected randomly from voters who have established a frequent voting pattern.
The margin of error is plus or minus 5.65 percentage points.
The Oklahoma Poll is sponsored by the Tulsa World.
Municipal elections
Voting
In-person absentee voting for the city’s primary elections will continue Monday, Labor Day, at the Tulsa County Election Board, 555 N. Denver Ave.
Regular voting at all standard precincts will take place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday.
What’s at stake
Republicans and Democrats will choose their nominees to be Tulsa’s next mayor, and five of the nine City Council districts will have primaries.
In Districts 2, 5 and 8, the primaries will settle the races, while in 4 and 6, voters will advance two candidates in each district to the Nov. 10 general election.
Republican voters also will decide which of their party candidates they want to send up against the Democratic incumbent city auditor.
On the ballot
Republican mayoral candidates:
Dewey Bartlett Jr., Kevin Boggs, Nathaniel Booth, Anna Falling, Chris Medlock, David O’Connor, Paul Roales, Michael Rush, Norris Streetman, John Porter Todd and Michael Tomes Sr.
Democratic mayoral candidates:
Tom Adelson, A. Burns, Prophet Kelly Clark, Robert Gwin Jr., Paul Tay.
Republican auditor candidates:
Preston Doerflinger and Lynn Ruemler.

It is OK Medlock, now you tell Michael Bates that he is probably not going to be the next city manager. Smedlock, you and Michael can still be friends though...as long as you can keep paying him to be your friend! I'm sorry the taxpayers can't and won't pay the bill for you! Please try to be strong and gracious during the concession speech. I know how difficult it must be for you! Wear some kind of light colored makeup

With all the news of tragedy this morning it was at least some small comfort that Anna Falling has only 7% support. It encourages me to think that not many Tulsans have completely lost their minds.

Bartlett is a Democrat in Republican clothing. No way can a true Republican vote for this man who has been and continues to be a supporter and cheerleader for Kathy Taylor. If he's elected, it will be business as usual at City Hall (excuse me, One Technology Center--thanks to Kathy Taylor). And if it ends up being between Bartlett and Adelson, I'll vote for Adelson--at least he says he's a Democrat and doesn't try to pass himself off as something other than that.

And I would like to hear from the candidates if they plan on keeping Kathy Taylor's high-dollar, at-will employees.

This makes sense if you trust the Sooner Poll.
Fearless Projection:
Bartlett 44
Medlock 42
Falling(This season's's designated Medlock-Blocker) 12
Everybody else 2%
So 56% of the Republicans will choose somebody other than Bartlett. But because we don't have a runoff, Bartlett will prevail.
And by the Seven Rings of Raggador, I'll vote for the Democrat in the General Election. Republicans, take your party back.

OK, it's the final stretch and every team needs a rally cheer! Here's one for Medlock (and his trusty sidekick Bates).
Bates and Medlock can't you see,
Each bully-loser wanna be,
Hopes for your vote election day,
To make their sad lives go away!
They love to trash both friend and foe,
Cause being mean is what they know!
What makes them sick, their only fear,
Will Tulsan's say, "Get out of here!"
So voter's let you voice be heard,
And finally flush these nasty turds!!!

Heading for another default election - by d' fault of a now-reactionary Party chasing ghosts of past glory, Adelson will receive my vote for Mayor.
Here's hoping he's not been bought out already, doesn't need a Round Table of Advisers and can outthink the Square Table of the Clowncil.

Anyone who calls Medlock a "conservative" has not done their homework. C'mon you so-called conservatives who support Medlock, don't be so lazy!!! We all now know he can't hold a job in the private sector, has stolen emails and lied about his MBA...but do you know the following:
Tulsa World
1/4/1994
“Medlock said he leaned toward pro-choice, although with
many reservations. “
Tulsa World
1/10/1993
The group, named the Mainstream Republicans of Tulsa County,
will try to give their party a fresh look on various issues.
Chris Medlock, chairman of Mainstream's executive commission,
said Saturday that the GOP needs to work together to solve problems.
"We have to get the Republican group that voted Democrat
back into the Republican Party," Medlock said. "The Republicans
have to come back and move toward the center. We have to
do what the Democrats did."
"We've had a bulk of Republicans who are pro-choice,"
Medlock said, "but we (Mainstream) take no stand on it.”
“We have had people leave the group because we wouldn't
take a stand on the issue. We may be naive, but we understand
the political process.”
MEDLOCK IS NOT WHO YOU THINK HE IS...AND HE SHOULD NOT BE TRUSTED TO LEAD THIS CITY.

I'm not voting but I've said it before and I'll say it again state Senator Tom Adelson is a empty suit.
Chris Medlock is a joke.
If I had a vote it would be for Bartlett, he's proven that he's not afraid to work with both sides of any issue.

This is a Tulsa World poll! They always underestimate the conservative vote. The poll was done last week before the city learned that Bartlett wanted to make the Broken Arrow Expressway a toll road. You watch, this will be a lot closer than this poll says.

MEDLOCK FAILS FISCAL CONSERVATIVE TEST
Any fiscal conservative knows you have to look beyond a politicians words, and instead look at their actions. So how did Medlock do on the fiscal conservative "test"...he failed! He may talk a good game, but while on the City Council when he actually had a chance to provide leadership and prove his mettle...Medlock totally caved. In fact, when you read his quotes below, you can tell he is a mealy-mouthed wannabe without any real backbone. I often wonder if he hates any Republican with wealth simply because he doesn't have the skils to actually create any wealth for himself. Medlock acts like a jealous, wealth-envy Democrat...not a strong, conservative leader. Maybe that's why his closest allies on the City Council were Jim "The Incomprehensible" Mautino, Jack "I see a racist" Henderson, and Roscoe "Say what?" Turner...with Medlcok, they were the Four Bumbeleers"
Tulsa World
8/21/2003
During a debate last week, Medlock was asked where he stood on Vision 2025.
He responded: "I guess I'm here to represent how to straddle a fence without getting hurt."
The comment came shortly after he and the other eight city councilors had approved a resolution supporting all four parts of the package and encouraging voters to pass it in its entirety.
"I thought that it was much more important to give that unanimity," he said of his vote on the resolution of support.
Voters on Sept. 9 will consider a 1-cent county sales tax to support the Vision 2025 proposals. The four-part ballot includes $350 million in incentives to lure a Boeing assembly plant to Tulsa; $22.3 million to fund capital improvements for American Airlines'
Tulsa maintenance facility; $350.3 million for education, health care and events facilities; and $157.4 million for a host of capital improvement and community enrichment projects.
Medlock said he fully supports Proposition 2 on American Airlines and Proposition 4, covering the capital improvements and community enrichment projects.
He said he had reservations about Proposition 3, which includes convention center renovations and a new arena, and on Proposition 1, which is the Boeing incentives.
Then he said he was "inclined to support Package 3 with a couple of more things to work on . . . oh, hell, I'm backing 3."

Observer3,
I meant and you know it, that he would be bipartisan.
Also if you look at the candidates choices you have sometimes you have to pick between two evils. Or just stay home and not be part of the process.
As I said I don't have a dog in this fight just an opinion. The only thing I use Tulsa for is getting from A to B if I'm going east.

Well,it looks like for once those who had planned these elections got it right: a run off would have been a waste of money and time given that both parties appear to be on the verge of nominating someone who will receive over 50% of the vote.
