Republican mayoral candidate Dewey Bartlett leads Democrat Tom Adelson by about 10 percentage points going into the general election campaign, according to the latest Oklahoma Poll.

Although the poll was conducted Aug. 29-Sept. 1, a week before Tuesday's primaries, respondents were asked how they would vote if the general election matched Bartlett and Adelson.

Forty-six percent of the 405 likely voters surveyed picked Bartlett, compared to 36 percent for Adelson and 18 percent who didn't know how they would vote.

The survey also paired Adelson and two other Republican candidates, Chris Medlock and Anna Falling, in hypothetical general election match-ups. Adelson was the choice by similar margins in both — 50 percent to 30 percent against Medlock and 49 percent to 27 percent against Falling.

"I think that's the most interesting thing we found," said Bill Shapard, president of SoonerPoll.com, which conducted the survey.

"Chris Medlock gets only 50 percent of Republicans and 10 percent of Democrats" in a match-up with Adelson, Shapard said. "Dewey Bartlett gets 70 percent of Republicans and 23 percent of Democrats."

Two long-shot independents, Mark Perkins and Lawrence Kirkpatrick, are also on the November general election ballot. Perkins and Kirkpatrick were not included in the survey.

At this early stage, voters appear to break much along party and ideological lines. Against Bartlett, Adelson held 61 percent of the Democratic vote, 74 percent of self-described liberals and 50 percent of moderates.

Only 13 percent of Republican voters said they favor Adelson.

Noting Bartlett's 2-to-1 advantage in crossover voters, Shapard said Adelson "has to find a way to plug that leaking bucket" and bring Democrats back to his side.

Anecdotal evidence suggests voters are still pliable. Poll respondents interviewed Wednesday indicated uncertainty in their early choices and a willingness to switch.

One said he already has.

"I was going for Bartlett, but I've changed my mind on that," said Otto Cantrell, a Republican. Bartlett's arrest for driving while under the influence 30 years ago and his 2004 divorce, he said, have caused him to "believe Adelson is a better man."

Others said they favor Bartlett because they remember his father, Dewey Bartlett Sr., Oklahoma's governor in the late 1960s and a U.S. senator in the 1970s. Adelson's family, although it hasn't been involved in politics, has also been prominent for many generations.

"I like both of them," said Ollie Sanders. "But I am a Democrat. If they weren't so close, if I thought Bartlett was better, I'd vote for him."

Joan Coe, a registered Democrat, said she plans to vote for Bartlett because "he's just been a substantial man in the community for a very long time."

Patty Volentine, a partisan Republican, said Bartlett "is a well-known name. I knew Dewey Sr., and he was a good guy, and I assume (Dewey Jr.) is, too."

She said she was disappointed, though, that the younger Bartlett endorsed current Mayor Kathy Taylor, a Democrat:

"She hasn't been a bad mayor, but where's the party loyalty?"

Eugene Meints, a Democrat, said he favors Adelson because "I don't like Dewey Bartlett much. I think he's an elitist. I don't think we need any more of that."

Peggy Gibson, one of the rare Republicans who indicated a preference for Adelson, said he is "kind of the lesser of two evils."

Meints summed up what most of those interviewed seemed to be saying.

"I would like to see the candidates get together and have some questions and answers about what the mayor ought to be doing," he said. "I don't think we got much of that in the primary."

About the Oklahoma Poll

SoonerPoll.com conducted the scientific telephone survey Aug. 29 to Sept. 1 of 405 likely voters registered in the city of Tulsa. The margin of error is plus or minus 4.87 percentage points.

The respondents consisted of 195 republicans, 189 Democrats and 21 independents selected randomly from voters who have established a frequent voting pattern.

The Oklahoma Poll is sponsored by the Tulsa World.

Is it true the Bartlett suggested making the B.A. Expressway a toll road? If so, that poor judgement should definitely been taking into consideration before anyone votes for him. We need to nix all the toll roads and start using tax dollars to pay for them, instead of misdirecting highway funds for other projects.

Thanks Corvetteguy, I feel a little better about the choices for Mayor. I will research all 4 candidates and decide for myself the best person for the job.

I suggest to all Tulsa citizens of voting age, to do your research for yourself, don't depend on hearsay, comments on message boards, etc.

With the internet, tons of info is as easy as a click of the mouse. Read it all, think about it, analyze it. Then vote for the candidate that more closely alines with your values, thoughts and feelings on your future of Tulsa.

Voting for some candidate because he is handsome, had a nice dad, etc. is not a good reason for voting for a candidate.

If the citizens of the U.S. had followed my suggestions above during the presidential election last year, we wouldn't be stuck with Obama now.

Having met Tom Adelson twice I must say he seems like a nice guy. He does strike me as an empty suit, not much there.

Ignatz,

That may very be I never met Bartlett. I have met Adelson, like I said he's a nice guy. Just didn't impress me as person who who had a grasp on how things worked in government. My opinion; I don't have a vote in the Tulsa Mayors race.

Denver918,

A river posposal wouldn't pass in Tulsa. County vote gave almost 90 percent to the city with about 10 going to county. Tulsa voters defeated the measure anyway.

my view, same could be said for Dewey Jr. He has not been successful at all with his inherited wealth, only with the name, something he could not help.

Adelson all the way. No to privatize happy Bartlett, no real savings in doing this with critical services. Only lip service at the bpttom the page for the first year or so then reality sits in and the costs skyrocket. Just check with ok city on there experiment on their sewer plants.

Both of these guys are "nice". There's not a nickel's worth of difference between them (thanks, George Wallace). Both have Kathy Taylor, BOK and GK hung around their necks. The result will be total ineffectiveness while serving as mayor. Tulsa will continue to be under the thumb of the "Technicians" at City Hall. The bureaucrats will be calling the shots and spending our money. There were some capable candidates out there, but they just had too many weird character traits to be electable.

They both seem about the same to me and since Adelson is my son's political philosophy teacher, he has my vote.

Both candiates seem like good, honest, sincere people who wish to serve.
My advice to Tom Adelson would be: Senator Adelson, quit running television commercials pushing that your father is a medical doctor. I am aware that your Dad ia a very highly respected and liked docotor, but it has nothing to do with this election.
And my advice to Dewey Bartlett Jr. would be: Mr. Bartlett, it's time for you to engage in a very serious, televised inpartial debate with Sen. Adelson, and the two indepedent candidates for Mayor, and answer any and all questions. Explain you actions and support of Mayor Taylor.
I think both candidates deserve a long, hard look by the voters of Tulsa. They do not seem to be light-years apart in politics, so, it comes down to who is the best person for the job.
Fortunately, the extreme view candidates (both right-wing, and left-wing) did not get past the primary, so now we're down to two excellent, moderate, serious candidates, and two independents for those who dislike political parties.
A very nice match-up.

We should all vote for Dewey Bartlett because of his father. That's a brilliant idea. Who cares about the son's policies or personal strengths/weaknesses? We Okies all liked the daddy, so let's vote for the son.

In fact, I think we should do same in all our races, including U.S. House District OK-2 and president. It's a highly reasonable way to select our leaders in an elected democracy.

Both seem like bad choices, either way, they are not their own men. When Tulsa wakes up and elects a " Regular Person " who is beholden to nobody, it will truly be a great day for Tulsa.

Neither is a 'powerful' mayor like Chicago's Daley or even OKC's Cornett but of the two I like Adelson. He will devote himself to the job while Bartlett will try to juggle the job of mayor AND running his oil/gas company. My hope for either one would be:

1 - keep up momentum with PlaniTulsa and get a new comprehensive plan implemented for the city

2 - try again with another river proposal, this time just for Tulsa and not the entire county

3 - make the initial steps to getting a downtown streetcar built and plans initialized for commuter rail from downtown to the airport, BA, and Jenks (working with BA and Jenks)

4 - ensure OSU-Tulsa, with its new president Howard Barnett, gets back on track with its 2020 master plan for an expanded campus and 20,000 students independent from Stillwater.

5 - push to finally get the Gilcrease Expressway built opening up NW Tulsa to new development so Tulsa doesn't keep losing new home construction to BA, Owasso, Jenks, etc. Making this investment also means investing in renovating existing schools in the area or building new ones and building/updating the existing road/sewer infrastructure.

I will never vote for an oil man who has an interest in promoting his own company. We deserve a Tulsa mayor that focuses ONLY on the city and can remain objective and improve our city for the long term. I also have little respect for him because he doesn't seem like a family man with his recent divorce. Adelson seems very family oriented and that's important to me so he has MY vote.

"Those who can--SUCCEED"--those who can't-TEACH."And we are awash with lawyers delving into politics. Please forgive my disdain for these creatures. Mr. Bartlett at least is trying to run a business and I don't skewer him for a divorce; I am leading towards one of the Independents this time.
