Independent mayoral hopeful feels snubbed
He says Tulsans should urge his inclusion in future candidate debates.

Independent mayoral candidate Mark Perkins said Wednesday that Tulsans should demand that he be included in candidate forums.

"The public deserves the comfort of being able to make an informed choice on who will lead the city for the next four years," he said at a news conference at the Tulsa Press Club.

Perkins faces Democrat Tom Adelson and Republican Dewey Bartlett Jr. in the Nov. 10 general election. Perennial candidate Lawrence Kirkpatrick also will appear on the ballot as an independent.

Perkins' news conference came after a radio debate between Bartlett and Adelson, to which Perkins was not invited. He said he believes that the debate was held to create "attractive programming" in the wake of negative campaigning between the two major-party candidates.

Perkins said the mayor's race is "not about money; it's not about name. It's about proving to the citizens that you have what it takes to make good decisions, to work well with others and to give yourself to your city, its citizens and its future."

Perkins said Adelson and Bartlett have lost sight of what's important. He urged his opponents to stop mudslinging and "give Tulsans what they want, what democracy requires — the free exchange of ideas in a public forum."

"Please, guys, let's debate, let's disagree, but let's not fall into this kind of politicking," he said. "It's my hope that we can return the focus to Tulsa."

Perkins stopped short of saying there was a concerted effort by Adelson and Bartlett
to exclude him. But he said he has talked to his opponents, and "there has been a mixture of candor and denial."

Perkins said he can't blame Adelson and Bartlett for wanting him excluded.

"It's just politics. They know I appeal to a lot of people but don't have the money to bombard the airwaves," he said.

Perkins said the polls back him up "despite efforts to keep my name out of the citizens' ears by offering only two options to the questions, the numbers are still showing record numbers of undecideds at this late stage."

"A quarter of Tulsans are either supporting me or are undecided," he pointed out.

Perkins said that if his opponents are confident with their knowledge of the issues and their convictions, "then you should have the courage to stand in front of the citizens of Tulsa and earn your votes."

He should be included...this is more of the same in Tulsa. The midtown, elite trust fund kids are keeping a stanglehold on power by freezing out Perkins. (Bartlett and Adelson are practiacally one in the same.)

It would only be fair to include everyone, right?

I don't know anything about Perkins, but in general, I think a third party option could do a lot of good for all levels of government.

I'm sure he'll be thrilled he has the vote of a Coweta resident . . . . Also, thanks for your input Ric from BA and Dukeera from Jenks. Do you know who your own mayor is, by any chance?

Perkins is the status quo. He will be a puppet for the Chamber, Greater Tulsa Association of Realtors and the Home Builders Association. One look at his C-1 shows that.

Yes,he should be included in all debates! I think it is criminal if he isn't. Personally, I am one of the undecided myself. I would LOVE to hear more from him to see if I like him. I have heard from many people that they feel as I do. I would think that some media would sponsor this event as I'm sure it would be great for their ratings! We are all tired of the mudslinging and just want to hear about the issues!

KFAQ needs to read this and know that they are going to have some upset people. If I cannot hear Perkins debate I won't tune in.

I got push polled yesterday night (of course, right in the middle of painting in a room several doors away from the phone, heh). I told the (likely out of state) caller after she asked "Who do you support in the election, Dewey Bartlett or Tom Adelson?" that I did not even know if I am going to vote because of the negative campaigning going on from both sides.

Well, that screeched that phone call to halt. I really don't know if I'll vote... but I'll consider the independent guys. I'm saddened by the negative ads on the airwaves.

This is the problem with the two-party system. Real choice isn't given a voice because the parties game the system so rubes like us will only have two "choices." I hope Perkins gets to debate the status quo.
Interestingly, it looks like the GOP has already given up on Bartlett. The Republican Party already has a candidate out campaigning for Addelson's Senate seat--a Senate seat that will only be open if Addelson wins. This tells me the GOP has already decided that Bartlett is going to lose. I'd be a little upset if I was Bartlett and my party was undermining my campaign. Of course, all this means is that Bartlett should be left out of the debates, as it appears that Addelson and Perkins are the only viable candidates for Mayor.

First, Perkins was on KFAQ a week or so ago. Next, there WILL be a debate for all three candidates on the radio, and that was announced BEFORE his little speech.

Sorry, but the way he treated some callers that asked him straight forward answers had him lose my vote.

like iflyfast, I did hear them both promise this morning to do a debate with Perkins included, and when Perkins was on last week, IMHO, he sounded like a crackpot. KFAQ should not take the blame here.

My question is, why is Perkins saying only 3 candidates should be included in the debates/forums, when there are 4 candidates running for Mayor???

Great article on Mark Perkins. He should be included in all the debates and polls. He is not just a joke of a candidate like some of the other Independants have been. He is the real deal and could be a real contender in this race. I understand many people don't know much about him. He is not a career politican and does not have the funds to air TV ads everyday. If you want to learn more about him, please check out his website and send him an e-mail. I am sure he would be happy to talk with you and answer any questions you may have.

BTW, there are two Independents(really only one because Perkins is a registered Republican dishonestly running as an Independent through a loophole in the Charter) in the race. Where's the outrage that the real Independent in the race is being excluded?

I might actually take Perkins seriously on this issue if he were calling for all the candidates in the race to be included, instead of making it all about himself.

The other two candidates didn't include him because they are only worried about themselves and never looked around to see that someone else was in the race.

Isn't it ironic that Perkins criticizes his opponents for not having the courage of their convictions, when he doesn't even have the courage of his convictions to run as a true Independent.

Hello Hypocrite

As I am sure most people know, the other independant is a familiar name. He does not respond to questions concerning issues and really does not campaign, therefore I feel if he does not take his own campaign serious then why should the people of Tulsa take him serious? Invite him to a debate, but don't be surprised if he does not show up.
Mark Perkins, despite the opinions of some, is really the only true independant candidate and loop hole or not, his bid for Mayor is lawful.

iflyfast:
I understand your frustration about Perkins' answers in the radio interview. I was a bit frustrated myself because I know how he feels but it really did not come through in the interview. I know he wants to focus on questions that deal with real issues and not the same questions asking about him being a registered Republican or where he lives. These questions really should not hold as much weight as they seem to, but he should be straight forward on his answers because people want to know.
He is rough around the edges when it comes to interviews but remember, he is not a career politican. I would prefer to have a real person in office with new solutions then a polished slick talker with visions of Washington DC floating in his head.

I'm a registered democrat...for why, I haven't the slightest idea. Republicans aren't much better. For my vote this year... Mark Perkins, Independent.

I think we should all get behind him for Mayor.
