Video: More mayoral candidate ads scrutinized
"Adelson's Donations" from Dewey Bartlett Jr.
By P.J. LASSEK AND BRIAN BARBER World Staff Writers
Published:
10/3/2009 2:23 AM
Last Modified: 10/3/2009 8:32 AM
Tulsa Elections:
Read bios of candidates for mayor, City Council and city auditor and view a map of City Council districts.
As the Tulsa mayor's race unfolds, the Tulsa World will periodically examine the truthfulness of the campaign ads put forth by the candidates.
The general election is set for Nov. 10.
The ad:
"Adelson's Donations"
Format:
Mailer
Paid for by:
Republican Dewey Bartlett Jr.'s campaign
The message:
"Tom Adelson personally has donated more than $120,000 to ultra-liberals like Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and John Kerry. Unfortunately, it seems this is Tom's vision for Tulsa, too. If Tom Adelson spends his personal wealth supporting these liberal policy makers in Washington, D.C., what liberal policies will he push on Tulsa?"
The mailer lists donations in the amount of $76,100 divided among two campaign groups for Obama, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, along with Hillary Clinton for U.S. Senate, John Kerry for President and Tom Daschle's campaign committee.
It features photos of the politicians and indicates that these are "some of Adelson's most notable contributions."
Fact or fiction?:
Adelson said he made all but one of the contributions. The Clinton donation came from his wife, Julie Adelson, out of a joint bank account.
The ad links the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee with the re-election of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee with the re-election of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, but those groups support all Democratic congressional candidates.
Trivia:
Although Adelson has given to his party's leaders, Bartlett also has been generous with GOP candidates, with donations to McCain-Palin Victory 2008 and the presidential campaigns of Rudy Giuliani, George W. Bush and Mitt Romney, among others.
Bartlett also gave to the Democratic state legislative campaigns of Rep. Lucky Lamons and Sen. Mary Easley, among others.
The ad:
"Toll Roads"
Format:
TV commercial
Paid for by:
Democrat Tom Adelson's campaign
The message:
"As chairman of the street task force, Dewey Bartlett called for turning some of Tulsa's expressways into toll roads. He wants us to start paying for roads we use for free. Do you want to pay? We can't afford Bartlett as mayor."
The ad shows a photo of Bartlett's head pasted on a virtual body installing toll booths on an expressway and squeezing dollars out of a car.
Fact or fiction?:
Bartlett was a co-chairman of the streets task force that was assembled by Mayor Kathy Taylor.
Having the city buy the Broken Arrow Expressway from the state and turn it into a toll road to generate street maintenance funding was an idea put forth by the group, along with possibly selling naming rights for roads and financing street repairs through oil and gas drilling.
Those ideas were included in the group's final report. But the main recommendation was for the city to pursue at least $1 billion in new property and sales taxes for a streets effort.
City leaders ultimately went with a $451.6 million plan, which was approved by voters last November.

With the donations made by Tom Adelson, it shows him to be a very liberal. Oh by the way the donation to Hillary Clinton by his wife Julie coming from a joint account was his also.
Bartlett donation to Lucky Lamons and Mary Easley does show that he is somewhat bipartisan. Though I have a problem with the Easley donation but can understand the Lamon's donation.
I don't have a dog in this fight and really don't care who gets elected Mayor of Tulsa. But any story with P.J. Lassek's byline attact to it I be careful. P.J. has proven to me over the years to be a partisan hack.

The vote is still over a month away, but I`m leaning toward Adelson.
Trying to raise taxes or increasing the size of government are my two biggest no-nos.

I'm voting for Adelson. He's the only one with any 'real' political experience. Bartlett wants to drill for oil in our parks. That's a conflict of interest.

Mark Perkins gets my vote so far. He has remained on point addressing issues, has not entered this completely negative campaign program run by Adelson and Bartlett, has asked for specific, issue focued debates to no avail from Adelson or Bartlett yet.
All this fighting among the R & D camp does nothing more than distract from the true issues facing Tulsa. Neither R or D candidate has offered any real solutions or even ventures to truly quantify Tulsa's issues to let us know they even understand what the everyman/woman faces day to day. I also think either Adelson or Bartlett will just be more of the same that we got from Kathy Taylor...increased spending and increased taxes or legal fees to cover. You have only to look at Bartlett's and Adelson's campaign contributors to see the similarity to Taylor.
If Adelson is elected, the Tulsa Community Foundation which has supported many now scrutinized ventures such as the ballpark and its associated assessment will have more influence with his bother on the TCF. Bartlett will pander to the same Oil & Gas companies such as Oneok and Nadal Gussman, also partners with TCF. There needs to be someone to say Tulsa needs to try and do it on its own, that we're grateful for the efforts thus far but to re-establish faith and trust in city government, there needs to be some distance put between city politics and this local favored establishment.

BetterorWorse, Nadel & Gussman is run by none other that James F. Adelson, Tom Adelson's brother. Tom used to work for N&G too. Are you saying that Bartlett is in bed with the Adelsons?
Also, for the people saying vote for Mark Perkins, what exactly does he stand for and what is his experience? Why vote for him, other than the fact he isn't Tom or Dewey?
Finally, for those who say they are voting for Adelson because they don't want their taxes raised (such as justiceawaits)...look at the people who Adelson supported at the National Level with his campaign contributions. Obama, Kerry and Daschle. Some of the most liberal people to roam the halls of the US Capitol. I don't see how someone could vote for those people, and at the same time be against raising taxes. One has to question Adelson's beliefs when it comes to taxes if he is supporting people like that.
Tom and Julie are great people. But I obviously don't share their politcal views.

Vote for Adelson....he looks just like Steve Martin. That will give us 10 comedians in elected positions.

I`m leaning toward Adelson also, He is open minded and fair. My real pet peeve is the narrow mindedness and constant bashing by Republicans.
I changed from Republican to Independent because of the hostility and bigotry of the so called moral party. Enough is enough.
