Video: Punches continue in mayoral race
At issue is an attack ad based on a vote that Tom Adelson cast in the state Senate.

Tulsa Elections:
Read bios of candidates for mayor, City Council and city auditor and view a map of City Council districts.
View the latest from the Adelson and Bartlett campaigns.
Dispute over the validity of a political attack ad that portrays Democratic mayoral nominee Tom Adelson as soft on child molesters continued Wednesday through news releases between his campaign as that of his Republican opponent, Dewey Bartlett Jr.
Adelson's attorney, James Connor, also issued a second letter demanding that media outlets remove the "blatantly false" and "malicious" television commercial and air accurate and appropriate retractions.
Adelson blasted Bartlett at a news conference Tuesday for his "dirty campaign tactics" after the ad began.
He said Wednesday that Bartlett's campaign continues to spend thousands of dollars broadcasting the false ad "and refuses to own up to its dishonesty."
Bartlett said he is standing behind what he called a "truthful" ad.
Adelson, a state senator, said the ad accuses him of wanting to change a law that mandates life sentences for repeat child molesters.
"Dewey says that I wouldn't let juries give child molesters life without parole, and
that is absolutely false and defamatory," he said.
Bartlett said the ad is strictly about Adelson's vote on Senate Bill 1800, not whether his vote affected a jury's ability to impose life-without-parole punishments.
Adelson did vote in 2006 against the bill, which mandated death or no-parole life sentences for twice-convicted sex offenders whose victims were younger than 14.
Current law mandates only no-parole life terms for repeat child molesters and does not define the victim's age.
Adelson said he voted against the bill because the death penalty aspect was unconstitutional and he knew that the life-without-parole sentence would not be affected.
Bartlett claimed Tuesday that the Senate did not discuss the constitutionality of the law, but a 2006 news release by the bill's author, Sen. Jonathan Nichols, indicates otherwise.
Bartlett said Wednesday that he meant that there was "no proof" that Adelson participated in any such discussion.
The bill was signed into law, but the U.S. Supreme Court ruled it unconstitutional last year.
Bartlett said Adelson voted against the bill and charged that when he is called on to defend his vote, he "hides behind the liberals on the U.S. Supreme Court."
Adelson said he has always supported "tough penalties for despicable criminals who prey upon citizens, especially our children."
He supported an effort to allow chemical castration of rapists and sex offenders.
Adelson said Bartlett is repeating "gutter tactics" that he used in his last mayoral campaign in 1992.
Bartlett said he was "deeply disturbed" when he learned about Adelson's vote during the campaign and that he thought "Tulsans needed to know about it."
What’s in the television ad in question?
The commercial opens with a colorful playground full of children and a voice-over stating: “Nothing that the Tulsa mayor does is more important than keeping families safe. That is why Tom Adelson’s record on crime is troubling.
A suspicious-looking man in a hooded sweatshirt sneaks toward the park and lurks behind a tree, and the color ad goes to black and white.
The narrator states: “Adelson voted against the death penalty for twice-convicted child molesters, the worst of criminals.
He wouldn’t even let the jury give child molesters life without parole.
“And Adelson voted for budget cuts to the Department of Public Safety, taking our law enforcement off the streets.
“With a soft-on-crime liberal record like this, we can’t trust Tom Adelson to keep Tulsa families safe.

Tom you voted against the legislation so get over it already. Sure the ad is in poor taste but none the less true. Just say you disagree with the ad and go on. If all this lawyering is an example of your "leadership" well that is the last thing Tulsa needs. We had enough of that with the outgoing baggage, I mean mayor.
Stop crying.

As usual Bartlett continues to twist the truth to suit his own agenda. Would you rather have a mayor that will vote for things just so he retains his popularity - even if it means the supreme court would overturn it? Or would you rather have someone who is educated and intelligent enough to find out if something is unconstitutional and tries to put a stop to it? If Bartlett is going to push his own agenda as mayor, Tulsa could end up at the losing end of numerous lawsuits. That is the mark of a true politician - one who will vote for something even though he knows it is the wrong thing to do - just so he doesn't look bad.
BTW, I've noticed a marked difference in television ads between Adelson and Bartlett. Most of Adelsons are telling what he is for/against and what he plans to do as mayor. Most of Bartlett's are just talking trash about Adelson.

Jacky, good question. I would rather have neither of these idiots. Barlett lacks tact and Adelson is a whiney lawyer. Not much of a choice. Guess I will go independent.

I am a Democrat and I will vote for Adelson. But, when the campaign started I had a positive opinion of Bartlett. I have voted for Republicans for mayor in the past. I figured who ever won we would be in good shape in Tulsa. Bartlett has managed to change my opinion of him. I now view him incredibly negatively. Bartlett may win, but he may find he has created such a poisonous atmosphere that he will not be able to do the job he was elected to do.

I was going to vote for Bartlett until I received a mailing from him today. He is calling Adelson a liar on three issues, stating that KOTV Channel 6 reported Adelson's false advertising. There's a cartoon drawing of Pinocchio being scolded for lying. There is not a single word that says anything about Bartlett's platform. The one positive statement that I've been waiting to hear from either candidate is that the kindergarten behavior at City Hall will stop. Their attitude so far is that both of them not only want to enroll, but to lead the class.

Bartlett said he was “deeply disturbed” when he learned about Adelson’s vote over the course of the campaign and he thought “Tulsans needed to know about it."
No more disingenuouis statement was ever printed in the Tulsa World.
I can see one thing clearly: Dewey thinks that Tulsans are fools.

After all this campaigning I still have no idea who might be a decent mayor. That includes Perkins, who may hope to benefit from being too small a factor to include in all this trash, but of whom we know very little. I wish we could start over. I just feel dread, relentless dread.

I am not happy about either of these choices. But if Bartlett is elected it is rumored that he will hire a former city councilor and a current city councilor for his staff. Neither of them would be good for Tulsa. So that makes him a bad choice!

Let's send a message to both Bartlett and Adelson (as well as to future candidates): your campaigns have been very successful. Unfortunately for both of you, you were successful in showing us that neither one of you is worthy of our vote. Time for new blood. The old is smelling really foul.

Dewey. I recall getting a postcard during your last campaign that said that the candidate he was running against would support gay marriage, and it showed a white man and a black man figurine on top of a wedding cake, indicating that, not only would two men marry each other, but *gasp* a white person and a black person might marry each other. That tactic was hateful and racist...and this tactic smacks of the same, half-truth subversive message.
You know darn well that no person... certainly no politician would be "soft" on a child molester.
This is despicable, and you not only solidified my vote, but you lost a friend. I assure you, I will tell you who I am to your face when I see you next.

Perkins, the independent has my vote. I am turned "off" by Adelson and Bartlett. They don't talk or advertise about the real issues facing our city. P.S Used to be an ardent supporter and donor to Tom's previous campaigns. Very disappointed.

Dewy Bartlett used Pinocchio and Jiminy Cricket in a recent mailer. Dewy better be careful or Disney will sue for trademark infringement. Kathy Taylor initiated enough lawsuits for one decade so best to vote the candidate least likely to initiate a lawsuit!

Traditionally an avid Republican but vote for Bartlett....I think not! Was considering the unthinkable and cast it for Adelson but he effectively put that thought to rest. What to do? A feeling of impending doom. I actually thought we could do no worse then Kathy T. I fear the worst is yet to come.
