Mayors share common ground
Small midtown area houses current, past and future mayor.

Tulsa's next mayor will have something uniquely in common with not only current Mayor Kathy Taylor, but the three mayors before her.

No, it's not the office at City Hall that links them — it's where they live.

All reside within about a two-mile area of midtown.

Republican Dewey Bartlett Jr., Democrat Tom Adelson and independent

Mark Perkins will square off for the city's top job

in the Nov. 10 general election.

If Perkins is unsuccessful, the home turf of Tulsa's recent mayors shrinks to an area with a radius of about 1 1/2 miles.

"Honestly, I don't know what to make of it, other than perhaps there's something in the water, which we all know it's not," quipped Elaine Dodd, former Tulsa County Democratic Party chairwoman who has kept a longtime eye on local politics.

"It's very interesting," she said, "But, I think it is just a curious fact."

Don Burdick, former Republican Party chairman, agrees it is odd, but noted that some previous races have had candidates from outside that geographic area.

"My honest assessment is that it seems more circumstantial than intentional. It would be interesting to check it out more to see if there is a correlation to something," he said.

Chris Medlock, who made two failed mayoral bids as a GOP candidate, wondered aloud at his campaign announcement last summer whether someone who is not a midtowner could be elected mayor. He lives in south Tulsa.

Shelly Boggs, assistant Tulsa County Election Board Secretary, said that is an established area where voters go to the polls.

"It's definitely a coincidence that they all live in such a tight area that is in the center, the heart of the city," she said.

She also pointed out that all of them except former mayor Bill LaFortune have resided in state Senate District 33. LaFortune lives just a few blocks outside of it in District 35.

All live roughly between 21st and 31st streets and Peoria Avenue to Columbia Place.

In 1988, voters elected Democrat Rodger Randle under the old commission form of government. He lives at 1395 E. 26th St.

The form of government changed in 1990. In 1992, Randle resigned and Democrat Susan Savage was elected in a winner-take-all election, defeating a huge field of candidates including Bartlett.

Savage held the seat until 2002, when she opted not to seek re-election. She lived at 1202 E. 18th St.

LaFortune, a Republican, came next and lives at 3120 S. Birmingham Ave., followed by Taylor, a Democrat who resides at 2811 S. Columbia Place.

Perkins lives at 2142 S. Florence Place, Adelson at 2448 E. 26th Place, and Bartlett at 1235 E. 30th Place.

"I really don't think it is a predictor to what we will see in the future, and it's certainly not a conspiracy," Burdick said of the residential locations of the previous mayors and the latest candidates.

Dodd agreed, saying, "I don't think someone wanting to run for mayor and doesn't live in midtown will have to go purchase a home in midtown to be successful."

Well lets see, midtown is the most desirable area of tulsa, like that's surprising or something?
Pffffffft
Stupid news story. Must be a slow day.

It's where all the rich politicians live, and their neighborly motto is: You donate to my campaign, and I'll take care of you and your interests. It sure worked for Kathy Taylor. Why do you think there has been so much emphasis on downtown development?

Well really nobody in North or East Tulsa has the money to run for mayor.

loudshirt, that about says it all. It takes money, friends in high places, and political clout to run for mayor. Kathy Taylor's hood has it all.

Don't know what to think of it? One word "money".
If they look down their noses at us in our neighborhood, as Taylor has, we will still be begging for help the election after this one.

the rich stay in their neighborhood, and the middle class stay in their neighborhood, and the poor stay in theirs, so is this any surprise?
At lest we have a new million dollar mansion in our neighborhood, only thing is you gotta be homeless, a drug addict, or mentally insane to live their!!!

born okay the 1st time. It's been a slow day for news all day and on all stories. Yawn. I'm sure the TW has some great stories of a tulip under snow or other mundane headlines.

Honestly, this is not the type of marlarkey that P.J. usually writes. I'd expect this from Jay Cronley, but not P.J.

Is Cronley on vacation?

No it's not big news or anything. But it is interesting that we don't have Mayor's from poor or moderate income neighborhoods. And I propose those citizens would make just as good Mayor's if not better than the Mayor's we have had from queen Kitty's hood.

Future World we do not have people from poor to moderate to self made rich neighborhoods because 1. their to smart and thus stay in the private sector. 2. They have no history so no name recognition. 3. Most politicians become politicians because they are not smart enough to survive the private sector. There are several mansions elsewhere in Tulsa and most of those people are new money and unlike the midtown old money groups they don't flaunt it. I have seen bigger mansions in bum**** Oklahoma then in midtown but the midtown money like those in my old home of Boston like to flaunt it and think they are better then every one else. The biggest houses in Tulsa are not in midtown those are just the ones that are flaunted. I will take a poor person with new money backing over some of these old money/politician fools.

I bet all of these hustlers turn out the lights and hide from trick or treaters. Either that, or they kidnap the children and eat them at a block party for the corrupt, political machine known as "midtown".

Still, even though he is "one of them", I will take Perkins over the other two clowns.

The story hit the mail on the head:

"Shelly Boggs, assistant Tulsa County Election Board Secretary, said that is AN ESTABLISHED AREA WHERE VOTERS GO TO THE POLLS"

Tulsa will not see a change in its leadership by midtown elitists until the rest of Tulsa gets out and votes for a candidate that can truly know and will represent all of Tulsa.

Tulsa also cant sit back and complain when they get the Mayor they dont like if they dont get out and vote or take the time to known the candidates but just vote on party lines.

I think whoever wins the Mayor's office should be forced to move their personal residence to the heart of north Tulsa.

The crack of gunfire and bullets whistling overhead in the middle of the night, might just give them a new first-hand, up-close perspective on violent crime and the very little we are doing about it as a group of people.

I did hear candidate Tom Adelson discuss shootings and stabbings in one of his Tv commercials. the he talks about some sort of support for young people.

I want to hear about long prison terms with hard labor during incarceration. I want to hear about no-parole sentences and life without possibility of parole for third time offenders. I want to hear about demanding more ICE presence in Tulsa. And I want to hear the Mayor candidates give there take on why there isn't one single north Tulsa so-called leader demanding these longer prison terms. We've heard about racial profiling out of some so-called leaders, but I'm not hearing anything about how to keep criminals away from honest, hard working citizens, some of which are the majority of these so-called leader's constituents.

How about some straight talk about violent crime solutions> Do any of you have the courage to address the real issues? Speak up...
