Mayoral hopefuls aim to return copters to service
All three say at a Tulsa Youth Council forum that the police choppers are integral to public safety.

Tulsa Elections:
Read bios of candidates for mayor, City Council and city auditor and view a map of City Council districts.
Tulsa's three leading mayoral candidates said Wednesday that they would work to get the police helicopters flying again.
The two helicopters were grounded recently as city officials worked to cut $6 million from the budget.
But Democrat Tom Adelson, Republican Dewey Bartlett Jr. and independent Mark Perkins said at the Tulsa Youth Council forum at City Hall that they should be made a priority.
"It is a public safety concern," Adelson said. "We need to get them back in the air where they belong."
A state senator and lawyer, Adelson said savings can be found by better managing overtime in city government and by getting the discounts the city is entitled to through its vendors.
Perkins, a lawyer, called the helicopters a "force multiplier."
"Our budgetary situation is a mess right now," he said, adding that other cuts that don't affect the city's law enforcement objectives need to be found.
Bartlett, a former city councilor and president of Keener Oil & Gas, said the helicopters are extremely expensive to fly and maintain.
"They are big-time potatoes in terms of cost," he said.
Bartlett suggested that Tulsa consider a partnership with other agencies
that use helicopters.
He cited as an example the Grand River Dam Authority, of which he is a board member.
The authority has two helicopters that it uses primarily during the day, while the police helicopters are used mostly at night, Bartlett said.
"In my view, there's an opportunity," he said.
Although most of those who attended the Youth Council's forum aren't old enough to vote in next week's election, that didn't stop them from peppering the candidates with questions on everything from reducing crime to protecting music and art programs in the schools.
All of the candidates pledged to listen to the youth population, if elected, calling it Tulsa's future.
Adelson said it's important for the mayor to be involved with the Youth Council and other youth programs to keep young residents engaged in their city.
Perkins, who turned 31 on Wednesday, said: "I'm not as removed as the other guys. But what I'm going through and what people 10 years younger are going through are different than what you all are experiencing. It's important to tap into all demographics."
Adelson is 44, and Bartlett is 62.
Bartlett said it will be important for the mayor to talk to youths from all over the city, from all walks of life.
"One thing that I've said in my campaign is that I want to be focused on one Tulsa," he said.
"I want to be there for you. I'm very serious about that."

Ah, how long until the cops get a mandate to crank up revenue generation through bogus speeding tickets and the like? They will find the revenue to keep the choppers, they always do.

As a conservative I wouldn't give you 2 cents for Bartlett. He's already shown he has no qualms whatsoever about stabbing conservatives in the back by endorsing Taylor.
"IF" I vote in these election at all - it will be for Perkins. I need to do a little studying first to see if he's just a snake of a different color.

Totally agree with keeping the choppers. The FLIRs on these can track running criminals at night. And if the perp is driving, there's nowhere to hide from the eye in the sky.

It might just be me but it seems like all their answers to questions mimic this, "Adelson said it’s important for the mayor to be involved with the Youth Council".
This isn't an answer yet I see it everywhere.

All of Barlett's answers are about his connections and how he has the friends to get things doen.
To that end, I have a Perkins sign in my yard, along with alot of other people in my neighborhood, which is odd for where I live.

Having friends in high places can be helpful to a point. Where I raise an eyebrow is when he suggests things like joining with GRDA on sharing costs for the chopters. It seems shady to me, and its not just this one example either, there was another about toll roads I kinda remember, again it might be wrong but whatever.
The Mayor should have no personal financial ties when it comes to running the city. It would just feed him too much power wouldn't it? Or am I other thinking this?
Tying several companies together to save tulsa, which tulsa will have to pay later, and the grand schemer is our own Bartlett.
I am, well, we had Alot to talk about at my church group tonight so, sorry if this doesn't make sense if any.
Kick him when he's down SR! bleedy-heart liberals!!

I'm happy the kids are asking questions and interested in the democratic process, but the majority of them don't pay taxes and can't vote yet.
Wouldn't it be a better idea to spend more time with the voting public?

These candidates probably didn't have time ot talk to these children. I admire them.
In this mud-slinging campaign (between two frontrunners), this is a needed breath of fresh air.

Reason09: exactly what can a mayor do to impact the second amendment? Answer: nothing at all, so whatever he may think is moot, at least for this election.

"The right experience, temperment, innovation and honesty to get things going."
How can you say Dewey has the honesty to get things done when he's the one candidate who has been blatently dishonest? His claim that Adelson wanted to take child molester cases away from the jury is an outright lie.
And I think it's funny that people think a vote for Perkins will help Adelson. I'm starting to think Dewey is going to finish last, which means a vote for Dewey helps Adelson.
Reason09, I'm not sure where you're coming from since the Supreme Court recently handed down a decision that takes away a city's ability to pass localalized gun control laws. None of the candidates could pass anti-gun measures even if they wanted.

A bit like a Family Guy episode with Bartlett. He will work 4 days a week and get up early only if he is motivated by the salary and will the job-gettingest mayor and the helicopters cost big time potatoes.

Some of the blame for the helicopters being grounded belongs on the FOP's shoulders for refusing to give up outrageously expensive perks.
More than half of Tulsa's police live outside of Tulsa, yet the city provides them with cars to use back-and-forth to cities like Claremore, Okmulgee, etc. and that adds up.
We expect Wall Street execs to give up perks, why dont we expect the same from city employees?

anti rube...as I explained to you in another post, that case is limited only to the District of Columbia. Until and unless the Supreme Court extends this precedent to the rest of the country throught the Chicago case, liberals like Perkins are free to try and take away second amendment rights.

I feel a vote for Perkins will help Adelson win. In the last election, I couldn't bring myself to vote for LaFortune again, and I wouldn't vote for Kathy Taylor, so I voted for the independent, which helped Kathy Taylor win (UGH). I've regretted my vote for the independent ever since. Just saying.

Bartlett is chomping at the bit to privatize public services.
"In my view, there's an opportunity". I bet.
Is he suggesting City of Tulsa contract with GRDA to use their helicopters for night use only?
Sorta like a party line? You really think that will fly with TPD?
Yeah, what a swell way to scratch your fellow boardmembers backs; line their pockets with our city's money. I'm sure you and GRDA CEO, former senator Kevin Easley have come up with hundreds of ways to exploit the mayors office in your past six months on the board together.
Like taking over management of our water supply?
Then let a few of your other friends tap into it to save Tulsa more money?
Enough of the greed, you two.
Privatization of public services is most often based in corruption, and ends up costing a city and taxpayers much more.
As voters we're fortunate to see the writing on the wall before the election.

And FYI, GRDA's Kevin Easley (the deregulator) and his mother, State Senator Mary are both Democrats. Mom's district 18 is where our water supply is, and has suffered maintainence funding cuts in the past year.
So any profit opportunities here are bipartisan.

I am sad for those who say they cannot vote because it will hurt/help another candidate. This is not what democracy is about. We should vote for who we feel is the most qualified for the job. There is clearly one person who is the most qualified for the job and he does not have party ties!
All citizens who are registered should vote no matter what!!! This is the only way that a democracy truly works!
